λDU – The likely number of DU failures during a time interval of 109 hours Unit is “FIT” (Failures in Time), e.g. 500 FIT = 500 DU-failures/109 h However, since 109 hours = 114 155 years, the FIT info is somewhat abstract PFD – Probability of Failure on Demand Directly linked to the λDU value Also describes the reliability of the SIS to perform its desired function Relates to the actual time frame the SIS is used The PFD value is much more convenient to use than the λDU value
