As the winter approaches, occasional bad weather necessitates the closing of school for the safety of our students. School closing information will be announced over the radio station KAWL (1370) and television stations KHAS, KLKN, NTV and KOLN. We also use an automated phone message service through School Reach which we will use to contact parents about school closings as well. With this service it is very important that we have current contact numbers on file. Please call the school office if anything changes. You may also call our school closing phone line at 402-723-4421. If a decision has been made the night before, the closing will be announced around 10:00PM. In the mornings it will be announced on the half hour from 6:30AM to 8:00AM.

It is nice to see that the weather has straightened out and allowed for harvest to be finished for the year!
I would like to give you an update on our Huskie Beef Program. Our program has been in place for a year and the students have really enjoyed the quality of meals using this donated beef. The money that we have saved from these donations will be used in combination with depreciation funds to update lunchroom furniture and provide additional offerings for students. We have prime cuts of steak in 10 lb. boxes for sale with proceeds going back to the student lunch program. We should have prime rib roasts available for your holiday table, as well. The Heartland Huskies traveled to Grand Island for the annual Harvest of Harmony Band Competition on Saturday, October 7th. This was the 76th Annual Harvest of Harmony Parade.
The Heartland Band was named the top band of all classes at the parade. There were 100 bands in the parade competition. The band was in class C this year and received 1st place. They also received the NTU traveling trophy for the top Class C and D band. Heartland was named All- Class Award for the best band in the parade.

Heartland FBLA Members Attend Fall Leadership ConferenceThe Nebraska FBLA Fall Leadership Conference was held September 25th in Lincoln. The conference was a one-day workshop for FBLA officers and members. This year's state theme is "Elevate Your Future." The state officers shared the 2017-18 state goals during the Opening General Session. The speaker was Rhett Laubach from
Oklahoma. His keynote was titled,"Torchbearers: How to be an actively engaged FBLA ambassador of awesomeness!" His presentation was designed to help members understand how to grow and strengthen their influence as it relates to growing and strengthening their FBLA chapter. Following the general session, the officers and members attended Business/Industry Sessions presented by Nebraska Department of Banking and Finance, Gallup, BCom Solutions, Hudl, Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, and the UNL College of Education and Human Sciences. They also attended Program of Work Sessions titled Fueling Your Finanical Projects, Raising the Stakes with Sweepstakes, Nebraska FBLA Foundation Trust, Make your Mark with the March of Dimes, Elevate Your Program to the Top, What do all those letters stand for?, Elevate Your Future from FBLA to PBL, and State and National Projects.

Heartland Community School drama participants have been working hard on their submission for the one act play competitions in November. They will be giving a performance for the community on Saturday, November 4 at 7:00 p.m. in the school theater.The play, “Tracks” by Peter Tarsi, tells the story of a group of strangers who meet in a dirty subway station. As they converse together, they notice strange things such as stopped watches and limited personal belongings. They also soon realize there is no way out of the station. What does this mean and how will this affect
their lives, or in this case, possibly their deaths and the question of an after-life? Will they have faith to climb aboard the next train to their final destination?Produced by special arrangement with THE DRAMATIC PUBLISHING COMPANY of Woodstock, Illinois.

Heartland Vocal Music Concert November 6
Students in grades 5-12 will present a Fall Concert on Monday, November 6 at 7:30PM in the HCS theater. Students have been working hard to prepare singing and choreography to share in this public performance. Come and hear selections from the musicals “Finding Neverland,” Wicked,” and “Newsies,” as well as pop hits from Katy Perry, Pentatonix and more. Hope to see you there!

Plum Creek Literacy Festival
The ballots are in! After a week of campaigning through posters and student-created commercials, twenty grade 4-6 elementary students gave speeches in front of grades 3-6 staff and students and other viewers. Of the twenty candidates, nine were named to the Huskie Principal's Advisory Council (PAC).Those elected were:Grade 4: Aiden Franssen, Lexi Inglsbee, Riley Quiring, and Brooklynn VeerhusenGrade 5: Weston Ohrt, Braelynn Renz, and Tucker RobinsonGrade 6: Ben Janzen and Mariah Tessman
On October 17th Mrs. Coffey and the Huskie PAC went to Doane University to participate in the Region I Leadership Conference. Nineteen different Region I elementary leadership teams were represented at the conference. During the conference, there were two keynote speakers: DeMoine Adams and Allison Tietjen, and six different breakout sessions led by Cross County High School Student Council members and DeMoine Adams. Former Husker Blackshirt, DeMoine Adams (DeMo) was the highlight of the students' day. He spoke a lot about training your leadership muscles and getting into LeaderSHAPE. Students learned about what it takes to train their confidence, character, and cheer. Throughout his keynote the students would repeat the following: Day by day, I will get better and better, a leader that can't be beat, won't be beat! During DeMo's breakout session, students learned how to help tackle bullying by speaking up, stepping up, and teaming up. Another highlight for the Huskie PAC was spending time on Doane campus and getting to eat "college food." After a full morning and lunch, the students had a chance to listen to Miss Nebraska 2017, Allison Tietjen. She spoke to the students about the different heroes in her life and how as leaders they too could become the hero of someone's day.
The conference was a wonderful experience for the Huskie PAC. They are looking forward to setting goals and priorities for the 2017-2018 school year.

Breakout Session: Team Building and Effective Communication
Third grade had the opportunity to attend the Plum Creek Literacy Festival in Seward. To start the day, they listened to Emily Arrow and then was able to make Oobleck from the book, “Bartholomew and the Oobleck” by Dr Seuss. Afterwards, students got to participate in a variety of lawn activities. We ended the day by listening to Henry Cole. It was definitely a fun-filled day!

Four Corners Health Department is concerned with the health of you and your family. We would like to share with you some facts about Whooping
Cough, or pertussis as we have had recent cases in young and school-aged children. Now that school year has started, we would like to share with you more about Whooping Cough.Whooping Cough is very serious illness that affects the lungs and breathing tubes, causing violent coughing you cannot stop. It is easily spread to other people through the air by coughing and sneezing. It is most harmful for young babies and can be deadly. The DTAP vaccine protects against whooping cough.
Watch for the signs of whooping cough. Whooping cough starts with:• Runny or stuffed-up nose• Sneezing • Mild cough• A pause in breathing in infants• After 1 to 2 weeks, coughing, which can be severe, starts and:• Children and babies can cough very hard, over, and over• When children gasp for breath after a coughing fit, they make a “whooping”
sound• Coughing can make it hard to breathe, eat, drink, or sleep• Coughing fits happen more at night• Coughing can include vomiting• Babies and young children may turn blue while coughing from lack of oxygen.

Preschool News: Ch.I.L.D. Day Provided by Heartland Community School
The Heartland Community School is setting aside a special time for parents of childrenage 5 and below to participate in Ch.I.L.D. Day, which stands for Childhood Informationon Language and Development. Just as parents take their young children to the doctor
for medical check-ups, the school can provide to parents the services of a“developmental wellness visit”. The early childhood personnel at the school can provide
current and useful information to parents concerning the early development of their baby,toddler, or preschooler.
Ch.I.L.D. Day is a childfind effort conducted by the Heartland Community SchoolDistrict. School districts are required to conduct childfind activities to ensure that young
children who need early intervention services are identified. Involvement in Ch.I.L.D.Day is a free, completely voluntary service and is conducted in a confidential manner.Ch.I.L.D. Day is set for Friday, November 17 from 8:00am-4:00p.m. For babies and
toddlers under age 3, we will be meeting in family homes so that the children will feelmore comfortable in their natural environment. For children ages 3-5, we will be meeting
in the Heartland Preschool room at the school.Interested parents who live in the Heartland School District can call the school office inHenderson to register for a time slot when the early intervention specialists can meetwith their child. Parents will be able to ask questions about their child’s development,complete a developmental checklist, and have their child play and interact informallywith adults knowledgeable about young children. Further information may need to be
gathered at a later time if the parents and school staff see any concerns. Parentalpermission is required for any further evaluation.

Early in the season, the team employed a two-squad schedule, splitting into a Red squad and a Blue squad. Heartland NHS sponsored a blood drive on Monday, October 9th. The Community Blood Bank collected generous 20 donations. Thank you for your support of this lifesaving cause and making the NHS Blood Drive a success!
Early Bird Basketball
Our first installment of Early Bird Basketball concluded on October 4th. This free program was offered to ALL students in 1st-6th grade. The camp ran from 7:30am-8:00am during four consecutive Wednesday's. The program was focused on providing fundamental skill development, teaching life lessons through basketball, and instilling a passion for our sport all in a safe place for students.
We had over 40 students attend each session. We saw improved behavior and listening skills as the camp progressed.

SNC Sportsmanship Summit
Heartland students were selected to attend the SNC Sportsmanship Summit in McCool Junction on September 19th. All eleven conference schools were represented, and students were involved in team building activities, sportsmanship discussions, and physical challenges. Heartland students also had the privilege of listening to UNL's Pole Vault Coach, T.J. Pierce, talk about various leadership topics."
During the month of October, 2nd graders had the chance to watch caterpillars grow, turn into a chrysalis, and eventually emerge as beautiful Painted Lady Butterflies. We observed the seven butterflies in our classroom for a few days and then released them into the center courtyard. The unit of Plants and Insects is part of our FOSS Science Curriculum.

Perfect ScoresEach spring, students from across the state of Nebraska are required to take the state level assessments in the areas of reading, mathematics, science, and writing. At halftime of the game on Friday, five students were recognized for perfect scores on portions of the these tests.
Wynema Stracener – Wynema scored a perfect mark in English & Language Arts as an 8th grader. This is the second year in a row that Nema has earned a perfect score on the state test! Wynema is the daughter of Jessica Geis. Great job, Wynema!
Lauren Quiring – Lauren is the 9th grade daughter of Lonnie and Lisa Quiring. Lauren scored a perfect mark in mathematics last spring. This is the second year in a row that Lauren has scored a perfect score in mathematics! Keep up the great work, Lauren!
Wyatt Regier – Wyatt is a 9th grader here at Heartland and earned his perfect score in mathematics last spring. Wyatt is the son of Randy and Leslie Regier. Way to go, Wyatt!
Zach Quiring – Zach is the son of Craig and Christine Quring. Zach earned his perfect score in mathematics last year as a 6th grader. Congratulations, Zach!
Donald Ficken – Donald is the son of Geoffrey Ficken. Donald earned his honor in the area of mathematics as a 7th grader last spring. Nice work, Donald!
