As we close out 2013, we have the opportunity to reflect and consider some of the remarkable

accomplishments of HETRA this year. As an organization it was a year of expanding

knowledge and our expertise in the area of Therapeutic Riding, Hippotherapy and Veteran

Programming. HETRA hosted an American Hippotherapy Level One Course for the HETRA

Occupational and Physical Therapists as well as others therapist from the Midwest. This was

not only a wonderful opportunity for learning and sharing but also a first step for some of our

therapists in preparing to take the Hippotherapy Specialist Certification Examination. HETRA

also hosted the PATH Intl. Region Seven Conference in September which was attended by

industry professionals from nine different states. Several of the HETRA Staff presented on

various topics at the conference and the Valley barn was the site for the Barn Day. In the fall,

three of the HETRA staff also attended a weekend course in Illinois where programming and

services to Veterans was discussed by leaders in the industry. We are extremely excited about

all of these wonderful opportunities to not only learn more ourselves but also to share our

professional knowledge and expertise with others in the industry.

Without question, the most important accomplishments occur in the arena for our students

each and every week. In 2013 we completed 3,536 billed sessions with over 18,000 volunteer

hours. Whether it’s the student who is learning to take their first steps on their own off the

horse, or the student who started cantering this year, we have witnessed many firsts, many

smiles and many individual goals being met by the awesome students of HETRA . 168 unique

individual students were served in 2013. Walking through the barns during sessions I often

encounter students and families I may have not seen for a while and it never fails to amaze me

the progress these students have made since the last time I watched them in session.

HETRA has also continued to develop many community relationships with other organizations

in 2013 including Quality Living, Inc., Take Flight Farms, Creighton University School of

Occupational Therapy, PATH International, American Hippotherapy Association and others

that help to extend the reach and impact of all of these organizations for individuals with

disabilities.

2014 will mark 25 years of service for HETRA to the community and we are looking forward to

an exciting year by continuing to expand the services offered to our very special students. We

are moving forward towards our long term goal of a home of our own and we hope that you

will continue to help HETRA provide outstanding service to our students in the upcoming year

through your support.

We are so grateful to all in our community who share your time, talent and treasures with

HETRA and our students. We are 24 years strong thanks to your support and dedication!!

The HETRA Students

“Most parents would be afraid to put their two-

year old on a horse, let alone the fact that the

toddler suffered from Shaken Baby Syndrome

and was left with a traumatic brain injury. I will

admit that I was very nervous the first time I

walked into the barn. My daughter had vision

problems, and was not able to walk or use her

right arm, she struggled with her speech, her

balance was bad and she didn’t have a lot of

strength in her core. Despite all of our fears, we

put her on Waldo, and at that moment I knew

that she had found a horse that was going to

play a huge part in her rehabilitation.”

session is $118.00. HETRA
