HEAT AND TEMPERATURE

Page 3: Heat and temperature

HEAT IS A TRANSFER OF ENERGY

HEAT FLOW

• Conduction

• Convection

• Radiation

Page 7: Heat and temperature

While conduction involves molecules passing their kinetic energy to other molecules, convection involves the molecules themselves moving from one place to another. For example, a fan works by displacing hot air with cold air. Convection usually takesplace with gases traveling from one place to another

Convection

Molecules can also transform heat into electromagnetic waves, so that heat istransferred not by molecules but by the waves themselves. A familiar example is themicrowave oven, which sends microwave radiation into the food, energizing themolecules in the food without those molecules ever making contact with other, hottermolecules. Radiation takes place when the source of heat is some form ofelectromagnetic wave, such as a microwave or sunlight

TEMPERATURE

Temperature is measure of the degree of hotness of an object.

Our sense of touch is not always a reliable guide to the degree of hotness of Object.

Page 10: Heat and temperature

Thermometer is a device used for measuring temperature.

Clinical Thermometer 35 ˚C to 42 ˚C Use for body

Laboratory Thermometer -10 ˚C to 110 ˚C Use for other purpose

Normal temperature of our body is 37 ˚C

CONDUCTORS AND INSULATORS The materials which allow heat to pass through them easily are

conductors of heat.

The materials which not allow heat to pass through them easily are insulators of heat.

• Dark coloured object absorb radiation better than the light colored object .That is the reason we feel more comfortable in light coloured clothes in summer

• Woollen clothes keep us warm during winter. It is so becouse wool is poor conductor of heat and it has air trapped in between fibers.
