NEWS:

o Seton Park Groundbreaking

On April 25th, Chair Rosemary Ginty joined the Department of Parks & Recreation, Riverdale Little League, Congressman Engel, Assemblyman Dinowitz, Councilman Cohen and Senator Biaggi’s Chief of Staff at the groundbreaking ceremony for new ball fields at Seton Park. Bronx Community Board No. 8 is excited for this renovation and thankful to NYC Department of Parks and Recreation for their ongoing commitment to our community.

o Be a Clean Water Advocate!

The Environment and Sanitation Committee of Bronx Community Board 8 announces a new community initiative to help clean our waterways. Be a Clean Water Advocate! It’s as easy as 311. Garbage in streets clogs sewer grates and catch basins. A clogged catch basin causes flooding, and sends dirty water and garbage from our streets into our waterways. But you can help. When you see clogged catch basins or flooded street, just follow these 3 steps:

1. Call 311 and report the location of the flooding or sewer grate.

2. Call or email Bronx Community Board 8 with the 311 number so we can follow up.

3. If you have not received an email resolving your call in two weeks, call the Community Board office.

o Fire Safety Tip

The type of building you live in affects how you and your loved ones should plan for, and escape, a fire. Knowing if you live in a fire proof or non-fire proof building can ultimately save a life. Check with the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) if you are unsure if your building is fire proof or non-fire proof. Remember, if you are in imminent danger from a fire or a fire is burning inside your apartment, get out immediately and call 911. Always listen to instructions from the Fire Department during emergencies. Non-Fire Proof Buildings- it is usually safer to leave immediately. Generally, fires in non-fire proof structures are not easily contained to one portion of the building and can spread quickly. Fire Proof Buildings- It is usually safer to stay inside your apartment rather than entering dangerous, smoke-filled hallways. Generally, fires in fire proof buildings will be contained to the portion of the building where the fire started. Additionally, if the fire is below your apartment, you could risk being caught in rising heat and smoke in stairwells. o Fair Housing Law

All New Yorkers deserve fair and equal access to housing. The NYC Human Rights Law prohibits discrimination in private and public housing, land, and commercial spaces in New York City. This means that any person selling, renting, or leasing—including landlords, superintendents, building managers, brokers, and realtors—cannot discriminate because of a person’s actual or perceived protected status under the law.

For additional information or to report decimation click here. o Heat & Hot Water Complaints

Residential building owners in New York City are legally required to provide heat and hot water to their tenants. You can make a complaint about a residential building that does not have enough heat or hot water.

Residential Heat and Hot Water Requirements Between October 1 and May 31, the NYC requires building owners to provide tenants with heat according to the following rules: Between 6 AM and 10 PM, if the outside temperature falls below 55 degrees, the inside temperature must be at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Between 10 PM and 6 AM, the inside temperature must be at least 62 degrees Fahrenheit at all times. There is no outside temperature requirement. Hot water must be provided 365 days per year at a constant minimum temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

Before filing a complaint, you should try to resolve the issue with your landlord, managing agent, or superintendent.

Call 311 to make a heat or hot water complaint for your apartment. NYC requires you must provide your contact information.

o Freeze Your Rent SCRIE Application Forms Available at Bronx Community Board No. 8

The Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE) program offers eligible tenants an exemption from rent increases. To be eligible for SCRIE, you must be 62 or older, have a household income of $50,000 or less after allowable deductions and lease a rent controlled apartment, rent stabilized apartment or rent regulated hotel/SRO that costs at least one third of your monthly household income.
