Radiation– the transfer of heat based on the movement of electromagnetic waves

Convection—the transfer of thermal energy by the movement of a liquid or a gas

Thermostat—A device that turns itself on or off according to the temperature of the room

Conduction—the transfer of heat by direct contact

Conductor—A substance that easily transfers thermal energy

Thermal energy– The total kinetic energy of the particles that make up an object

Insulator—A substance that resists the transfer of thermal energy

States of Matter—The physical forms in which a substance can exist. “Solids, Liquids, Gases, and Plasma”

Temperature—A measure of the AVERAGE kinetic energy of the particles in an object

Heat Pump—A machine that moves thermal energy from an area of low temperature to an area of high temperature using mechanical work

Absolute Zero—The lowest possible temperature. “0 K” or “-273 ˚C”

Heat Engine—A device that uses heat to do work.

Heat– The transfer of energy between objects at different temperatures. Thermal energy travels from areas of HIGH temperatures to areas of LOW temperatures.

Change of State—The conversion of a substance from one physical form to another.

Thermal Expansion—Increase in volume of a substance as its temperature increases.
