The Twinning Association continues toplay its part in the life of Heathfield. Asusual a group went to Forges-les-Eauxon the 30 June/1 July which coincidedwith the annual Pays de Bray Marathonand Half-Marathon. Hello all from the Heathfield CommunityPolicing Team. Hope you all had a great time over theJubilee bank holiday. Some of you mayhave met us at the Heathfield Show thisyear. One of the themes we were promoting atthe Show was shed/outbuildings security.Burglary from a person’s house is one ofthe most distressing crimes that can becommitted and while we would alwaysencourage people to treat the security intheir home as paramount, most people areaware and thankfully this sort of burglary isnot that frequent. Theft from sheds and outbuildings are farmore common especially in the more ruralareas - but also in the residential areas oftowns. Thieves in these cases will just belooking for the right opportunity to takeanything they feel they may be able to sell;scrap metal being a favourite at themoment this includes gates, benches, andmetal statues. The other items they takeare garden tools, chain saws, quad bikes, etc. Mostly these items are stored in shedsand out buildings - the security of thesecan be easy to breach. If the thieves areseen they will make up an excuse such as“just looking for scrap to buy or “lost adog“, etc. If you see anyone in such cir-cumstances do pass the index number ofthe vehicles and descriptions of the peopleto us.There are measures you can take to helpyourself, such as putting on a few extralocks; ensuring gates are locked, etc. These are simple things that so often getover looked until it is too late. Marking property is important too as itmakes it less attractive to steal and if it isstolen, it will be more likely to be returnedto you if it is marked - firstly mark overtly -you can get special stickers, etc, for this
but simple emulsion paint with your post-code will do – it is also worth doing some-thing more covertly as a thief may decideto paint over or obscure obvious markingsso also have a secret way of marking theproperty so it can be identified. The more security measures you take theless likely your items are to be stolen - ifyour storage is remote eg an allotment, itis well worth storing more valuable items athome where they are easier to secure. Ifyou want security advice just call us at thestation - details as below. We will be out and about at some of theevents going on in the Heathfield area dur-ing the summer and will be pleased tomeet you there. For anyone wishing toorganise an event we are always happy toattend, when able, to help promote theevent - however this will be with a “commu-nity” interest - due to the amount of eventsthat are held we do not, as a communityteam, get involved with the organisation oractual policing of the event including trafficcontrol - this is down to the organisers ofthe event and they will need to go throughthe correct channels via the Council plan-ning office, which will link into the Policeand licensing, to see what arrangementsthey are obliged to conform with. All details of where we will be and what weare up to as well as a “crime mapping“facility are available on the Sussex Policewebsite - www.sussex.police.uk and lookunder “your area“ . www.heathfield.netalso has our details on it. Enjoy the Olympic Summer!

BROAD OAK PRE-SCHOOL
We meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month in the Village Hall at 2.00pm.Meetings start traditionally with the singing of Jerusalem. There is a competition orexhibition of items related to the subject of the talk given by the speaker on that par-ticular day. Recent examples have so far ranged from ‘Windmill Memorabilia’ to ‘WildFlowers in a Jam Jar’. Our well informed speakers have covered topics ranging from‘ My Friends the Elephants’, ‘The Face of Female Royals’ and ‘The Life and Work ofSue Ryder’. Members are invited to bring a single flower in a vase for our flower ofthe month competition. A small donation is given to the favourite one, the proceedsof which are sent to our chosen international charity, the ACWW, which helps womenin poorer countries.Members receive a posy of flowers in the month of their birthday and there is thenthe opportunity to have a chat over tea and cakes. As well as the raffle, we also havean interesting sales table offering plants, books, jams and bric-a-brac at very reason-able prices.Do call in sometime - you will be made most welcome. Telephone Pat on 01435862161 or go to www.esfwi.org.uk to learn more about your local WI.
At Broad Oak Pre-school we continue tovalue every child as an individual andoffer a nurturing, welcoming environ-ment.In July we said goodbye to over 20 chil-dren as they headed off to school - wefed six primary schools in the Heathfieldarea this year. Lots of exciting activitiestook place during the last term to ensurea memorable time for the children beforethey left us including a summer outingand sports day entitled Broad OakOlympics! The children also celebratedthe Queens Jubilee with a street partywhere they enjoyed party food and per-formed their favourite songs to the par-ents who also joined in the celebrations. In September we will welcome over 20new children who will join us over the
coming school year. We look forward tomeeting all the new children and theirfamilies as they begin their pre-schoollives with us.Fund raising remains an important part ofpre-school life and two of our staff recent-ly organised a ‘Through the Decades’themed disco, which was a huge suc-cess, raising over £500. Sports and Leisure CommitteeThe planning application for the indoor swim-ming pool and improved leisure facilities atHeathfield Community College wasapproved on the 20 June. We are still in con-tention for one of the nine relocatableOlympic training pools; securing one of thesewould substantially lower our capital costsand connect Heathfield to the Olympic lega-cy. There has been a great deal of work on awebsite for the swimming pool project and aprospectus for fundraising purposes is beingput together. ICTCommitteeAll sections of the www.heathfield.net web-site are constantly being updated. We arenow recording over 5,500 hits a month whichis proving its value to the whole community. Please continue to send in information onlocal events/clubs, etc, and check whetheryour business is listed on the shops andbusiness directory. New development workhas been invested in the Youth andSwimming Pool sites. Direct links to theYouth, Swimming Pool and HeathfieldWorks! sites can be found directly onaddresses: www.heathfieldworks.co.uk,www.pool.heathfield.net, www.youth.heath-field.netTransport CommitteeThe “Youth Express” continues to do wellserving the young of our community in get-ting to and from events. Our other minibusscheme for community groups is also avail-able and please do make contact to seewhether we can help you and your group. Please phone 01892 610314 or email [email protected]. Please see theseparate article for more information. Inward Investment CommitteeAs you know we were successful in securingfunding for the Broadband bid for HeathfieldWest but the commissioning of a suitablecontractor became a problem and the fund-ing has had to be returned to DEFRA. Theoncoming Broadband UK (BDUK) schemesupported by the County Council should nowbe the solution to the challenge across thewhole Parish and the Partnership will be
chasing this programme for the earliest exe-cution (hopefully in 2013). SuperfastBroadband is crucial to the Businesses in thearea as well as local Residents. This couldwell be an advantage for local blank spotssuch as Broad Oak especially. Police Local Action Team The Partnership Committee is continuing tosupport the local Police. The comprehensiveCCTV scheme is now in full operation andhas already contributed substantially to sev-eral prosecutions. All in all a further invest-ment in community safety and an excellentsupport for our Local Police Team. Farmers MarketThe Market continues to be successful sell-ing fresh locally produced meats, fish, veg-etables, breads, cakes and cheeses all of thehighest taste and quality along with arts andcrafts. It makes sense to buy from the pro-ducer direct. The market is held every thirdSaturday in the month in The Co-opSupermarket car park, Heathfield, between9.00am and 12.30pm.Heathfield Works! The second cohort completed in March andthe third cohort completed in June and aswith the first cohort, all the 16-19 year oldsinvolved are now successfully in full timeemployment or education. The fourth cohortstarted on the 16 July and finishes on the 21September. This is a fully mentored 10 weekprogramme for cohorts of 10 young peoplewho are not in education, employment ortraining to gain work placement experiencewith suitable training at the same time. Thementors will stay in touch with those youngpeople for a further 12 months to offer anyongoing support needed. We have had won-derful support from the Parish Council andthe business community. In spite of all the headaches the dreadful weather gave us all leading up to the Fair, the suncame out and so did the people, and they said over and over again that this fair was theBEST ONE since bringing the fair back to its roots at Cade Street. As per tradition DameHeffle released the Cuckoo and declared Spring’s arrival. The pageant was brilliant and abig thank you to all the people who so generously gave their time. Also to the pupils of OldHeathfield and St Richards School who sang beautifully. The stallholders, displays, dog showterrier racing, fun fair, country crafts, and delicious food all gave it a great day out for the com-munity, ending with a Cuckoo Barn Dance in the evening - music by Drs Orders. Thank you everyone who helped or supported in any way. We were able to donate £3,500 toDemelza Hospice Care for Children. If you feel you can help in any way with next year’s fes-tivities please ring Sandie or Nicky on 01435 882723 or Audrey on 01435 830504. Thankyou.

Burwash Monday Painters is a group of men and women who love to paint. We paint in the Burwash Village Hall on Monday afternoons in the winter. We paintstill life projects, sometimes we have a model to sit for us or we may have a demon-stration of a particular aspect of watercolour, for example. If there is something ofour own we wish to work on then we may do that. We work in various media suchas watercolour, oils, pastels, acrylics or anything we choose. In the spring we holdan exhibition at the Union Church Hall, Station Road, Heathfield. Our summers are spent painting out in the countryside at various venues, maybebeside the sea, at a National Trust property, or some pretty park or garden of whichthere are many in this beautiful county we live in. We meet at about 10am, have cof-fee then decide what we are going to paint. We spend the morning painting andthen meet to eat our picnic lunch together, returning to our painting and hoping toproduce a work worthy of a frame and a place in the exhibition at Burwash VillageHall in the autumn. The exhibition will take place on Saturday 3 December 2012from 10.00am - 4.00pm.Do you paint? Would you like to join a group like ours and share in our love of paint-ing? The last term at Horam Pre-School has been exciting for our Pre-Schoolers this year formany reasons. Firstly our 2, 3 and 4 year olds experienced their first street party. We want-ed to give the children the whole street party experience so the village hall was decoratedwith bunting and a long table laid out in Jubilee party ware for the children to savour. Thechildren helped practitioners prepare the food, ready for their families to arrive at lunchtimefor the party. Each child received a commemorative coin along with their Jubilee crafts totake home and fun was had by all. Just imagine these young children could be celebratingthe Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and a Coronation in the future. It is also an exciting time for our rising 5’s as we have 12 children who will be 'graduating'to primary school in September. The reception teachers have visited the Pre-School andthe children have also visited the primary schools and we held a special leaving party forthem this month. Our topic this term is looking at being healthy and keeping fit which will include looking atother countries around the world and events that are currently happening such as the Eurofootball tournament and Olympics. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyonewho donated their supermarket vouchers to the Pre-School; we have always received won-derful equipment and resources as a result of these valuable schemes. We would also liketo congratulate our children for taking part in Marie Curie’s 'Mini Pots of Care' campaignplanting daffodil bulbs last October, taking them home to care for them and bringing themback with decorated pots which raised over £80. Our next event will be a jumble sale on Saturday 6 October from 2.00-4.00pm at HoramVillage Hall, please come along and support our fundraising or donate your jumble. If youhave any questions re the Pre-School please call on 01435 812192. If you are looking fora Pre-School place for your child you can come along and visit the setting anytime just bycalling the above number.

As in previous years, there will be music and entertainment tosuit all ages, together with approximately 80 market stalls (approximately 50%French) selling English and French goodies and more and more Heathfield shopsare opening on the day – and some even reported record takings last year!!
This year we are trying to invite and showcase even more local musical talent thanever before. You can see from the very full Programme of Events there is somethinggoing on all day at FOUR SEPARATE VENUES around the town. Rumour has itthat the Heathfield Firefighters are holding their Open Day again at the Fire Station, which is always great fun and attracts many visitors. We enjoyed perfect weather atlast year’s Le Marche and we certainly hope we will again.
This year, we are proud to announce that FESH - Friends of East Sussex Hospicesis organising the street collection on the day. Please give generously and supportthis very worthy local charity.

Heathfield and Horam District Rainbows,Brownies, Guides and Senior Sectionhave had a busy few months. We had awhole District Jubilee Celebration eventwhich was held at Knockhatch lastmonth and this was thoroughly enjoyedby everyone. The girls had a great dayof fun with lots of activities, learningabout the animals and birds with showsand talks finishing off with a big sing withthem all taking it in turns to lead every-one. We have one of our senior section girls,Sophie, who has been chosen to repre-sent not just our District, or our Divisionor our County but our Region (Londonand South East) on a trip to Borneo nextmonth. She will be involved in a serviceproject whilst she is there so a fantasticexperience. Sophie has been busyfundraising to pay for her trip and recent-ly organised a bag packing day atSainsburys in Heathfield which helpedtowards her total. Two of our Brownie packs have just
come back from pack holidays over thehalf term, one joining up with UckfieldBrownies and visiting the Guide site atBlacklands and the other has been toSelmeston. We have had another successful year atSt Richards Pre-School. Our numbershave grown considerably this past yearand we currently have more children onour roll than we have had for manyyears. This is fantastic news for the Pre-School; we have lovely children withvery supportive families. This supporthas been fantastic and helps our Pre-School to thrive. Since January we have had a few keyevents and these have included aSponsored Easter Bunny Hop where thechildren managed an amazing 4,298jumps in 44 minutes. This event raisedjust over £340 for the Pre-School andSainsbury’s in Heathfield kindly donatedEaster eggs for all the children. To celebrate the Queens DiamondJubilee the children held a tea party fortheir families and made them cakes. They all made raffle tickets which thePre-School sold and we had a range ofroyal and red/white/blue themed prizes.July was a busy month. We had our Pre-School outing which was a day trip toBlackstock Farm in Hellingly. We alsohad our Olympic sports day and all thechildren were presented with commem-orative medals and cups.
Our on-going project is our garden. Wesuccessfully raised enough money topurchase all-weather anti-slip matting sothat we could use our garden all yearround. One of the children’s parents,Claire and David Groom, kindly offeredtheir services and fitted this for us. We still have spaces available forSeptember. We take children from 2years of age. For further details andinformation please see our websitewww.strichardspreschool.org.uk or call07751 072765.We would like to thank all the children, their families and the local communityfor all their support and wish them awonderful summer and good luck tothose leaving us to start primary school.

The unusual weather patternsseen this year – dry for the firstthree months then a very wetApril, May and to date June, coupled with the cold summerlast year - have had conse-quences for the SussexWilldlife Trust’s Selwyns WoodNature Reserve. The butterflysurvey which we conduct eachweek has, so far, only takenplace on four out of the possi-ble eleven Thursdays. As aconsequence we have not hadsightings in the wood of ourregular spring butterflies –Orange Tip and Brimstone.Last week we did record a RedAdmiral, a butterfly that seemsto be increasing its numbers inthe UK, possibly changingfrom a summer visitor to a
year-round resident; we havealso already seen SpeckledWoods another species thatare doing relatively well. One of the most exciting sight-ings in Selwyns Wood, madeby a regular observer of theWood’s flora and fauna, was ofthe Beautiful demoiselle dam-selfly. This beautiful insectwith its shimmering metallicbody (male - blue , female -green) and in the case of themale dark brown wings, fliesgracefully over running wateralighting on vegetation closeto a stream edge to bask insunshine. It was in just such aposition that we saw it a weeklater – a rich reward for thework which Sussex WildlifeTrust volunteers had done in
clearing the banks of thestream to open it up and let inmore light. A less rewardingtask, in terms of wild-life sight-ings, has been the replace-ment of a large section ofboard-walk over a particularlywet and muddy area in thenorth-east corner of thereserve, but it is important tokeep the paths in good orderso that visitors can get aroundeasily and enjoy the wildlifewhich for the quiet and patientobserver is there to be seen.

Some of the fruit picking has almost finished but you can still find plums, apples, blackberries and pears. Cooking apples, plums and pears stew and freeze welland can be used later in pies or toppings for desserts. Blackberries make a tastyjelly. Plums will also make a nice jam. If you are still picking runner beans you canblanch and freeze them for the winter. If you have a lot of weeds in your lawns, youcan still treat them – “Weed and Feed” I find is very good and for moss there is amoss killer and in turn the moss feeds the grass. Get rid of the weeds in the lawnsas it stops more seeds getting in the flower beds, hence less weeds. If the weath-er is dry don't forget water for the birds, as well as your tubs and bedding plants inthe garden. Most bedding plants are shallow rooted so when the garden gets drythey will suffer. If the weather is dry it is a good time to treat the wood on your gar-
den shed, fences, etc; I still like good oldcreosote. Thank you for reading myhints, I hope they help and have a goodsummer.

This term has been very busy and it has been tricky dodging the rain. In May our tripto the Mohair Centre was a great success and the children are still recalling the won-derful morning that we all spent feeding the farm animals. The children were invited to join in with the Punnetts Town Primary School's May Poledancing and Jubilee Tea Party. The children all wore wonderful Jubilee crowns they hadmade and enjoyed a lovely cup cake for their tea. Our next family event was theWhizzy Wheels Sponsored Pedal. This was organised to raise funds for a pre-schoolthat is developing in The Gambia. In early July all the parents were invited to meet their child’s Key Person at the LittlePunnetts Parents evening. All the parents were delighted to have this opportunity to dis-cuss their children’s progress and plan new targets for the coming weeks. All agreed itwas useful and in fact vital to ensure early year’s practitioners and parents work togeth-er to support their children’s learning and development.July saw our much loved annual Sports Day at Little Punnetts Pre-School with all chil-dren participating in the 'Olympic' themed fun and games. The day also saw the'Leavers' of the Rising Five group at the pre-school where this year's annual ceremonyincluded the children being presented with gifts from the staff and a special cake, aswell as 'tongue-in-cheek' job predictions for all the leavers! Chair of the Management Committee for Little Punnetts, Karen Taylor, commented ‘It isvery exciting to see the pre-school grow from strength to strength. We aim to continueto provide affordable, high quality education and childcare for local families’. She alsoadded, ‘We are so proud of all of our pupils at Little Punnetts and wish our leavers ahappy future at school'.Little Punnetts are offering spaces for children aged 2 – 5 years. Many, many years ago, when I was inmy primary school, I was taught thatEngland was very fortunate because theclimate was equable and temperate, never extreme. I believed what I wastold, but either my teacher was misled orthe world has changed!Look at this year. We had the most glo-rious Spring I can remember. I havenever seen such a glory of primroses onthe banks, so many bluebells in thewoods, such a variety of floweringshrubs in the gardens. Then it turnedbitterly cold again. We were forbiddento use hosepipes because we wereshort of water, then the heavens openedand the rain has hardly stopped. The wind howls now, and blasts theroses and foxgloves and I have turned
my heating on again. What can we relyon? A temperate climate? I don’t thinkso! It still gives us a topic of conversa-tion! Believe it or not, I have strawber-ries ripening in my garden, blackcurrantsweighing down the bushes and peachesripening out of doors, but I fear what ishappening to my sweet peas. Theweeds are flourishing and the lawnskeep growing. I needn’t be out of workfor ages! But I do not want to go to livein a flat with no garden to brood over! Please remember Heathfield FlowerShow on 18 August, at the HeathfieldCommunity Centre, Sheepsetting Lane.Even if you don’t show, you would enjoyit. Best wishes for whatever the weath-er does!
