It is splendid to see the Heathfield community being rewarded for all their hard work, effort and commitment in a whole spectrum of fields. Congratulations firstly must go to all our girls who received their A Level, AS Level and GCSE results in August; everyone who worked with the girls is extremely proud of their accomplishments. It is so satisfying to see so many of our A Level girls achieving their university courses and destinations of choice which include Biochemistry at King’s College London, Civil Engineering at University College London, Anthropology and Archaeology at the University of Durham to name but a few. Congratulations also go beyond public examination success. Mr Valner, Teacher of Latin and Classics, has passed his Newly Qualified Teacher Training. During the summer, LAMDA results were announced with all girls examined achieving an impressive standard of results. Furthermore, since the start of the Michaelmas Term four girls have been selected to represent Berkshire at Lacrosse. We are also proud to hear of the achievements of our Heathfield Old Girls who year on year keep us informed of their university accomplishments, which this year includes Francesca Lamarque who achieved a BA (First Class) in Philosophy and Theology from The University of Oxford. Another Set of Outstanding LAMDA Examination Results

During Summer Term 2012 forty-four girls took LAMDA examinations with 100% achieving either Distinction or Merit. Out of the girls who took the examinations, an impressive twenty achieved Senior Medals – Grades 6, 7 and 8. Congratulations to all of the girls who gained such superb results during the summer holidays, especially Emily and Tallulah (Form UVI) who achieved their LAMDA Acting Gold Medals at Grade 8 thus entitling them to 65 UCAS points.

Lydia Denehy

Lydia, Heathfield’s Head Girl in academic year 2010/2011, gained straight A*s in her A Levels which included an A* in History, A* in English and A* in RS alongside her A in Geography at AS Level. Lydia is taking a gap year when she plans to travel to South America, Mexico and Australia as she makes a post A Level application to read History at University when she returns.

A Level Success for Heathfield’s Sixth Form Academic Prize Winners

For four years in a row Heathfield School has been privileged to be awarded one of the Good Schools Guide A Level Awards. Heathfield has achieved this honour since 2009 where the school has been given the award for the Best Result at A Level achieved by girls taking Art and Design (Photography) at an English School and 2012 proved no exception, with 93% of applicants achieving A* – A grades at A Level in Art and Design (Photography).

Sophie MacRae-Tod

Sophie achieved A*s in Politics and Religious Studies as well as an A in History at A Level. After leaving Heathfield in June 2012 Sophie went to work for Norinchukin Bank for three months so she was able to fund her gap year. During her gap year Sophie will volunteer at St Stephen’s Society in Hong Kong before travelling around Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand. Although she has been offered a place at Exeter and Leeds, Sophie plans to make a post A Level application to read History or History and International Relations at University.

Sophie says she will “miss the relationship between her year group at Heathfield, the way that the whole year was inter-connected, and how they were one unit”. She said she would “also miss the teachers, as they were always willing to help, positive and energetic”.

As at AS Level

To sit alongside her impressive set of 6 A*s and 4 As at GCSE, Lisa (Form UVI) during summer 2012 achieved straight As in her AS level examinations, receiving As in English, Geography, Religious Studies and Photography together with her A* in Russian at A Level. In the UVI Lisa is taking all four subjects studied at AS Level for A Level and is applying to University to study a joint course, Philosophy and Russian. Whilst studying for her AS Levels Lisa also threw herself into the Prefect role as Head of Somerville House.

Francesca Lamarque (Heathfield 1999-2006) studied Theology, Economics and History at A Level as well as French and Politics at AS Level whilst at Heathfield and achieved A grades in all of her subjects at AS and A Level. After leaving Heathfield, Francesca went on to study for a BA in Philosophy and Theology at The University of Oxford where she achieved a First Class degree. Having recently graduated Francesca is exploring job opportunities and is hoping to develop a career in strategic consultancy. Whilst job hunting Francesca works part time for a property development company as well as running a charity events organisation called the Aloysius Society, which she founded whilst at Oxford. The society helps run large fundraising events, with the next taking place early next year to support UNICEF’s work in Syria.

Heathfield girls selected for Berkshire LacrosseCongratulations to Daisy and Daisy in Form IV and Emily and Ocky in UVI Form who have all been selected to represent Berkshire in Lacrosse. The Form IV girls were selected for the U15A and U15B Berkshire Lacrosse teams and the UVI Form girls were chosen for the U19B team. This is a wonderful accomplishment and we are very proud of their achievements. The Berkshire Lacrosse teams will play against other West Counties teams in a tournament held in November 2012. Katherine Baldwin and Taisie Pennick

Both Katherine and Taisie left Heathfield in June 2012 having completed their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and will soon make their way to St James’s Palace to receive their award from Prince Edward. The girls were assessed on the five criteria which are set by Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme at Gold Level – Skill, Physical, Volunteering, Expedition and Residential. The girls used their spare time at Heathfield to work towards gaining their Gold DofE which included taking part in extra sports practice and matches for the Physical element. For Kat’s Residential she stayed with a family in France for

two weeks whilst Taisie volunteered at a women’s refuge in Edinburgh for a week. After their Practice Expedition, in awful weather conditions, the girls went to Dartmoor for four nights for their assessment, navigating across the moor in differing terrains whilst ensuring they got to the right location each night to set up camp, cook and rest. Unfortunately, the weather was again very harsh but the girls battled against all the odds and completed the expedition. Achieving the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award is an incredible achievement requiring perseverance, determination and hard work.

On Sunday 9th September Old Girl Alice Orr-Ewing (Heathfield 2001 – 2007) starred in ITV’s adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s 1957 novel The Scapegoat. The book has been adapted for cinema but ITV viewers had the chance to preview it prior to its cinema release. Alice convincingly plays the role of Frances, wife of the lead character Johnny Spence. The film is set in 1952 as Britain prepares for the Coronation. John Standing, a teacher who is out of work, meets his doppelganger Johnny Spence, a failed businessman. Standing finds himself living out Spence’s life and dealing with the women in it: his wife, mother, sister, daughter, and two mistresses.

Our congratulations go to Alice on her TV debut and we look forward to seeing her next performance in the final episode of the Poirot series - which is out in 2013.

The History and Politics department was delighted with the performance of the girls this year. At A2 70% of History students and 100% of Politics students achieved A* or A grades. At GCSE 75% of girls studying History in two different syllabuses achieved A* or A grades.

The History and Politics department has a relatively new staff who are very passionate and dynamic in their teaching style and have worked tirelessly to try and inspire and motivate the girls with their choice of syllabus and teaching/learning methods. To accompany the work done in the classroom excursions have also been arranged. Politics students, for instance, visited the Houses of Parliament where they were fortunate to question the Leader of the House of Commons, Sir George Young, over lunch in the MPs’ dining room. GCSE History students were taken on a fully guided tour to the First World War battlefields at Ypres to supplement their research for one of the controlled assessment tasks.

Students were also enthused by a cross-curricular 1940s day which was arranged to coincide with a special Remembrance Day (11.11.11) and included a number of 1940s workshops and talks from an Old Girl and Lt Col Peter McCutcheon from Sandhurst Military Academy. This year the department will be focusing their cross-curricular day on Politics in an attempt to get the girls more engaged with and informed about their political system.

Heathfield girls studying A Level and AS level Photography have achieved a wonderful set of grades. With 93% gaining A*-A at A level and 80% gaining A at AS level, everyone has much to celebrate.

The academic year brought many inspirational opportunities for influencing personal work and challenging photographic knowledge. Girls saw the Taylor Wessing Portrait prize at the National Portrait Gallery, visited the annual Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition at the Natural History Museum and successfully completed their examination shoots around the Italian streets of Sienna where the temperatures were so cold that the digital cameras stopped working!

A wide range of subjects have been explored within the girls’ imagery such as still life, portraits, fashion and landscape which helped to make an exciting collection of work displayed for the private view exhibition held at the end of the course.
