Heavy Rock Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple and Queen were the first heavy rock bands but they were followed by a multitude of others and the style has continued. A rock band is made up of electric / lead guitars, bass guitar, drum kit and lead singer. Listening Task 1 Listen to some 1970’s Heavy Rock music Glitter/Glam Rock Glitter or Glam Rock developed in the early 1970’s and faded away around 1975. The name came from the glittering costumes and from the name of one of its leading artists, Gary Glitter. Bands like T Rex and Sweet played boogie-blues in a pop style to create this style of music. David Bowie is another artist to come out of glitter rock. Listening Task 2 Listen to some 1970’s Glitter/Glam Rock music Disco Disco started around 1974. Donna Summer was the first artist to be recognised as a disco star. Other black artists such as the Ohio Players, Gloria Gaynor, Earth, Wind & Fire, Barry White and Shalamar followed her. This was the time when the Afro hairstyle became famous! The film ‘Saturday Night Fever’ with the Bee Gee’s brand of disco, starring John Travolta was famous for its disco music. PopThe 1980’s produced pop groups such as Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and Wham. Electronic Music was developing.Other artists that began in the 1980’s were Madonna, Kylie Minogue and Rick Astley. A new brand of pop was formed which began the manufactured bands culture. Along with this teeny bopper style were novelties like the ra ra skirt, Rubik’s Cube and BMX bikes. Michael Jackson was one of the most famous 1980’s artists who was a bestseller from the 1970’s with the Jackson 5, throughout the 1980’s with his own unique brand of pop and the 1990’s and 2000’s with many number one and top ten hits. PunkPunk music started in the late 1970’s and continued through the early 1980’s. Punk put into words the feelings of ordinary young people.
