Hebrews Study Guide

HEBREWS 11:1-16 Part 2

Frankly, most North American Christians have things so good right here in this world that they don’t really know what it is to long for heaven. God has blessed us with an abundance of earthly comforts—more than any prior generation in history. There is a danger that we become so comfortable in this life that we forget we are but strangers and pilgrims in this world. Like Abraham, we’re supposed to think of ourselves as vagabonds here on earth, looking for a city with eternal foundations, whose builder and maker is God (Heb. 11:10). MacArthur, J. (1996). The glory of heaven: the truth about heaven, angels, and eternal life (p. 11). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Books.

1. “Location, location, location” is a colloquialism we understand to mean that where a home is located, largely determines its value. In reality, everything that is truly precious to us as Christians is located in heaven. According to Matthew 5:16 and 6:9, who is in heaven?

2. Read Hebrews 9:24. Who else, that we love dearly, is in heaven, and on whose behalf does he appear? What wonderful promises did Jesus make in John 14:2-3, and 23?

3. What does the Apostle Paul say about our citizenship and our bodies in Philippians 3:20-21? Read Hebrews 11:13 to see what the saints acknowledged, in faith, regarding their citizenship.

4. In Mark 12, Jesus corrects the theology of the Sadducees, assuring them that the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is the God of the living, not of the dead! How does the quote from Charles Spurgeon below encourage you in this truth?

“Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob have long been enjoying happiness and shall enjoy it throughout eternity. He (God) would not have spoken as he did if the visible were all and there were no future to counterbalance the tribulations of this mortal life. God is not the God of the short lived, who are so speedily dead, but he is the living God of an immortal race, whose present is but a dark passage into a bright future which can never end.” (We Shall See God, Randy Alcorn, pg 43)

5. What did Pastor Ryan teach about Revelation 13:6 in his message this Sunday? What more do you learn from the quote below?

Antichrist’s blasphemies against God will include blasphemy of His name and His tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven. God’s name represents all that He is; it is the summation of His attributes. So comprehensively evil will Antichrist’s blasphemy be that it will even include God’s tabernacle (heaven; cf. Heb. 9:23–24), and all those who dwell in heaven with Him. Thus, Antichrist will utter blasphemous words aimed directly and specifically at God’s Person, His abode, and His people, both the redeemed saints and the holy angels. MacArthur, J. F., Jr. (2000). Revelation 12–22 (p. 48). Chicago: Moody Press.

6. According to Revelation 12:10-11, who is the accuser of believers? What is the fate of the accuser, and by what means do believers conquer him?

7. What does 1 Peter 1:4-5 say is being kept safely in heaven for us? Since we know that God’s power is guarding our inheritance, how does this make Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:19-21 even more meaningful? What do you treasure?

8. Hebrews 11:6 and 26 tell us that God is a rewarder of those who seek him. Jesus did not correct or rebuke Peter when he asked his Lord about rewards (Mark 10:28-30). What did Jesus promise in Matthew 19:29? How do Jesus’ words in Matthew 7:11 reinforce this promise?

9. What did the OT saints ‘see from afar’ that made them seek a better homeland and a better country? Read Hebrews 11:13-16 for your answer. Hebrews 11:16 describes God’s response to their faith. What was it? What has he prepared for them (John 14:2-3)?

“The way to Heaven is ascending; we must be content to travel uphill, though it be hard and tiresome, and contrary to the natural bias of our flesh.” Jonathan Edward https://www.christianquotes.info/top-quotes/14-inspiring-quotes-about-heaven/#ixzz5gOovrKl9
