NumdamThe French digital math library
This started as a digitisation programme
Digitisation of journals, seminar proceedings, memoir series articles, pages
Still growing new series -, Astérisque scheduled early
Extending with digitised content from other sources (Gallica/BNF, Orsay. . . )
Not only journals proceedings, theses, monographs
Up to date with new post-digitisation material from publishers ( journals) articles, pages
Moving wall access model, typically years
New platform released last yearNew metadata registry with new formats (JATS & BITS)

Why Mersenne?Marin Mersenne (-) has been nicknamed “the secretary general of therepublic of scientific letters”, as he acted as a hub for scientific information of histime, just before the advent of journals and academies.
A quotation (Baillet, )

Why Mersenne?Marin Mersenne (-) has been nicknamed “the secretary general of therepublic of scientific letters”, as he acted as a hub for scientific information of histime, just before the advent of journals and academies.
A quotation (Baillet, )
“Mersenne was like the center of all scholars by the continual commerce hemaintained with all, and all with him. It was to him that they sent their doubtsand their difficulties to be proposed by his means to those whose solutions wereawaited; and when he had received them, he sent them back to them, havingalmost in the body of the whole Republic of Letters the function which the heartmakes in the human body with regard to blood. The Italians regarded him, aswe do, as the great mediator of the Letters, who furnished provisions to others, and was able to demand of them what they were capable of producing. ”

Centre MersennePrinciples: Editorial policy
Publications are peer-reviewed research publications
The articles are selected on behalf of a competent, scientifically independenteditorial board
The editorial board owns its publication’s title
Journals web sites comply with OASPA’s “Principles of transparency and bestpractice in scholarly publishing”
Th. Bouche (Mathdoc) Centre Mersenne JMM 2018-01-11 15 / 30

Centre MersennePrinciples: Operational
Eventual open access is mandatory (reasonable moving wall)
Non profit operation
Authors transfer copyright to the extent necessary for operating (no exclusivetransfer required)
Diamond open access is strongly supportedThis means “Gold” without APC, hence no money needed to publish or read thepublications

History and context Centre Mersenne The services Business model Forthcoming journals Contacts
Centre MersennePrinciples: Publishing practices
The web interface is based on two sets: texts (PDF) and metadata (XML)
Once published, texts can’t be modified
Metadata can be revised periodically (corrections, links. . . )

Business modelCosts
The structure of costs is simple (affine):Infrastructure development and maintenanceTraining of editorial teams and staff, coordinationInitial set-up costs per publicationRunning costs for each publication, depending on the level of service, editorialorganization, and volume published
The model must be scalable because we don’t want to reject new membersbecause of limited resources available
We must recover at least running costs from the organizations that support eachpublication

Business modelGeneral ideas
The insitutions supporting Mathdoc (CNRS, UGA) provide enough staff for thesmooth development and running of the infrastructure
Costs related to each publication must be balanced by some source of incomeThis can be a mixture of
Invoicing the journal or its supporting institution(s) at cost priceGetting grant support from institutions, foundations, library consortia (that wouldmoderate the above invoices)Setting up some sort of library consortium that supports the publishing costs of agiven set of journals (cf. Open library of Humanities). . .
