The Heinz Chapel Choir was founded in 1938 to coincide with the dedication of the Heinz Memorial Chapel, a gift to the University of Pittsburgh from Henry John Heinz, founder of the H.J. Heinz Company, and his children. Intended as a memorial to family matriarch Anna Margaretta Heinz, who instilled in her children the value of education and religion, the Heinz Memorial Chapel is interdenominational and welcoming to all. For 80 years, the Heinz Chapel Choir has presented a cappella music from a variety of time periods and cultural traditions and in a wealth of languages. During the first decades of its existence, the Heinz Chapel Choir’s primary responsibility was to sing the programs and services of the Chapel. While remaining an auditioned student ensemble inextricably intertwined with the Heinz Memorial Chapel, the Choir’s identity has transitioned to that of a non-liturgical concert ensemble, rooted in the a cappella idiom that resonates from its origin. Throughout its history, the Choir has always been a home for students at the University of Pittsburgh who study a wide range of academics but share a love for choral music, a dedication to excellence, and a passion for reaching the hearts and souls of their audience.

The Heinz Chapel Choir is under the direction of its tenth conductor, Dr. Susan Rice, who has served as a Senior Lecturer in Music at the University of Pittsburgh since 2014, teaching the aural skills/sight-singing course sequence, and as the Associate Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Department of Music since 2017. Prior to her appointment at Pitt, she was Assistant Professor of Music at Beloit College in Wisconsin. She has conducted traditional mixed and single-gender choruses of varying sizes, including chamber choirs, symphonic choirs, opera choruses, and vocal jazz ensembles, as well as teaching conducting, music theory, music history, class piano, and interdisciplinary courses. Rice completed a Doctor of Musical Arts in choral literature and conducting at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a Master of Music in choral conducting at Western Michigan University, and a Bachelor of Music in music education at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

John Ronald Daniels is the organist and choirmaster at the Sacred Heart Church, Shadyside. A native of Cortland, New York, he earned his degrees at Grove City College and Duquesne University. Since 2000, he has been assistant organist at St. Paul Cathedral, home of the famous 1962 Rudolph von Beckerath Tracker Organ. J.R. has passed the prescribed tests in service playing and holds the prestigious certificate from the American Guild of Organists. A former E. Power Biggs Fellow of the Organ Historical Society, he has authored several articles and has been involved in saving, restoring, and installing several historic instruments. The Heinz Chapel Choir’s long history of international touring has allowed scores of students the opportunity to experience the art and culture of other countries while evolving their musical abilities, expanding their knowledge, and broadening their worldview through an intensive travel schedule of educational excursions and performances. In Spring 2020, the Choir will embark on a 13-day tour of Denmark and Sweden. Choral singing is a prized activity for Scandinavians and music is prioritized in early educational experiences. Heinz Chapel Choir

The Heinz Chapel Choir was founded in 1938 to coincide with the dedication of the Heinz Memorial Chapel, a gift to the University of Pittsburgh from Henry John Heinz, founder of the H.J. Heinz Company, and his children. Intended as a memorial to family matriarch Anna Margaretta Heinz, who instilled in her children the value of education and religion, the Heinz Memorial Chapel is interdenominational and welcoming to all. For 80 years, the Heinz Chapel Choir has presented a cappella music from a variety of time periods and cultural traditions and in a wealth of languages. During the first decades of its existence, the Heinz Chapel Choir’s primary responsibility was to sing the programs and services of the Chapel. While remaining an auditioned student ensemble inextricably intertwined with the Heinz Memorial Chapel, the Choir’s identity has transitioned to that of a non-liturgical concert ensemble, rooted in the a cappella idiom that resonates from its origin. Throughout its history, the Choir has always been a home for students at the University of Pittsburgh who study a wide range of academics but share a love for choral music, a dedication to excellence, and a passion for reaching the hearts and souls of their audience.

The Heinz Chapel Choir is under the direction of its tenth conductor, Dr. Susan Rice, who has served as a Senior Lecturer in Music at the University of Pittsburgh since 2014, teaching the aural skills/sight-singing course sequence, and as the Associate Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Department of Music since 2017. Prior to her appointment at Pitt, she was Assistant Professor of Music at Beloit College in Wisconsin. She has conducted traditional mixed and single-gender choruses of varying sizes, including chamber choirs, symphonic choirs, opera choruses, and vocal jazz ensembles, as well as teaching conducting, music theory, music history, class piano, and interdisciplinary courses. Rice completed a Doctor of Musical Arts in choral literature and conducting at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a Master of Music in choral conducting at Western Michigan University, and a Bachelor of Music in music education at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

John Ronald Daniels is the organist and choirmaster at the Sacred Heart Church, Shadyside. A native of Cortland, New York, he earned his degrees at Grove City College and Duquesne University. Since 2000, he has been assistant organist at St. Paul Cathedral, home of the famous 1962 Rudolph von Beckerath Tracker Organ. J.R. has passed the prescribed tests in service playing and holds the prestigious certificate from the American Guild of Organists. A former E. Power Biggs Fellow of the Organ Historical Society, he has authored several articles and has been involved in saving, restoring, and installing several historic instruments. Much of his dissertation on Théodore Salomé can be found on Wikipedia.
