HELEN KELLER Helen Keller was born in 1880 in America. At the age of 19 months, she was a happy, healthy child and was saying a few words. Then, she had a high fever which caused her to become deaf and blind. She could no longer see or hear. She was a bright child but because of her inability to communicate, she became angry and began to throw tantrums. Her parents did not know how to help her, so they employed teacher to help Helen. She was Anne Sullivan. Anne was patient and understanding person. Her firm and caring ways slowly calmed Helen down. Helen became an obedient child. Anne taught Helen the hand alphabet and she would spell the words on her palm to communicate with her. This opened up a whole new world to Helen. Later, Helen learned to read and write using Braille (raised letter in the form of dots which Helen ‘read’ by running her fingers over the dots. Helen began to lead a normal life.
