    %,#!4&5,,30%%$An excellent head start for ELC Hungary and selected guests that had the chance to watch Speed Racer in a special, pre-premiere release, two days before the movies official debut. ELC organized the event in co-operation with Intercom, the Hungarian movie distributor of WB and hosted it at Palace Duna Plaza, the first shopping center in Budapest, on the 13th of last May. 150 invitation cards were distributed to local and international Speed Racer licensees, retail executives from Tesco and Cora supermarkets, Mattel, Lego, Dino Toys and carefully chosen potential partners, resulting to a very efficient, yet colorful mix. But the guest list

    couldnt be complete without the attendants children, the enthusiastic target group of the movie that turned a business-like event to a big family affair. The occasion was also honoured by the presence of ELCs president, Themos Sgouras while CEO, Hakan Durdag, general manager, George Athanasiadis and Yvett Vas, Hungarys country manager revealed their taste for sports cars and made a welcome speech to all the invited guests.The end of the show found ELC with crossed fingers, a lot of positive feedback, and all the necessary evidence that Speed Racer will definitely win the... The fun started at the entrance of the shop, with balloons and clowns walking on stilts, while the atmosphere was warming up, inside. Magic trick shows, face & body painting and cartoon projections were just some of the amusing activities that the hosts had scheduled for their guests. The omni-present Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Tweety stole the show once again, as they got caught in snapshots with friends, parents and local celebrities that honoured the occasion. When the birthday cake candles were blown, an explosion of rainbow-tinted confetti raised the party temperature, while guest-dj Maggie Charalabidou had the perfect soundtrack for the event. The companys dynamic licensing team paid a visit to WB Studios Stars shop at The Mall Athens. Themos Sgouras, president and CEO of Hellas Press, led the way as the team browsed through the store and merchandise, with the inquiring eye of the professionals and the excitement of genuine cartoon fans. On completion of the amusing audit, the group posed outside the store for a family photo, super-hero style... And yes, the choice of the t-shirts was totally symbolic! '2%%#%

Following last years smashing appearance, Looney Tunes honoured the National Sovereignty and Childrens Day again, by taking part in the festive parade that Kadikoy (a major municipality of Istanbul) had organized for the ocassion. Tweety, Bugs Bunny, Taz, the LISANS team and their classic, pink Chevrolet marched with a colourful crowd of more than 3000 children, while 25000 people watched the amusing event.     year in the US but only one of them attracts the biggest brands of today and tomorrow, in a single, licensing

    mega-event and thats Licesing International Expo. From June 10-12, more than 25,000 attendees from over 82

    countries converged at New Yorks Jacob Javits Convention Centre to get a small taste of the worlds premier marketplace

    for the $187 billion licensing industry. Licensing International Expo 2008 was an assembly of not just licensing professionals, but

    also of 6,000 properties and brands that were showcased throughout the halls of Jacob Javits Convention Centre, ranging

    from the established to the up-and-coming. Spanning such categories as entertainment, lifestyle, sports, fashion, food &

    beverage, automotive, home, publishing, art and more, this year s show uncovered countless compelling stories. ELCs story was

    definitely one of them. Representing companies such as Warner Bros, Cartoon Network and New Line Cinema, ELC is one of the

    show s loyal exhibitors. With an impressive display of consumer products, toys and fashion-friendly proposals featuring properties

The hypermarket areas were not only decorated with POP materials, featuring the animated dog hero but the various kids activities organized on weekends, turned the venues into giant playgrounds. The Scooby-Doo fair involved different, local licensees like Zoknitex (socks), Naturtex (home furnishing), WAM (apparel), Cardex (gift bags, calendars) and Pick (meat).Additionally, Characters Games and WBHV participated with a plush range and related DVDs, respectively, complementing the fun character of the activity. Famosas licensed plush line has just hit the market and to support the marketing push every one of Toyzzz 35 stores throughout the country offered branded window displays and shelves featuring the WBCP animated gang. And thats not all. Looney Tunes costumed characters added a party feel to Toyzzz Shop stores in one of Istanbuls most popular shopping streets as well as in Istinyepark, the latest and trendiest shopping mall in the city. One of the big showstoppers of the campaign was Tweety Cow, a work of art by Sinerji and Jay Young from last years Cow Parade, proving that this was more than just a publicity campaign it was an event.     &2/-350%2(%2/4/&!3()/.)#/.Milan Fashion Week provided the first-ever glimpse of American Vogue's Anna Wintour and the designer Giorgio Armani sharing a stage with a giant Batman. The occasion was a press conference at the Teatro Manzoni to announce details of this years Costume Institute Gala at New Yorks Metropolitan Museum, which will have Giorgio Armani as the honorary chair and Anna Wintour, George Clooney and Julia Roberts, as co-chairs. The theme of this year's gala otherwise known as New Yorks party of the year might have been suggested by the presence of Batman: Superheroes - Fashion and Fantasy. The Costume Institute's curator-in-charge, Harold Koda, was on hand to explain the raison dtre behind this year's theme, a radical departure from other galas which have featured iconic designers such as Poiret and Chanel. Recently, he said, there had been a surge in popularity of the superhero, something which had not been witnessed since Americas golden age of comic books in the 1940s. He cited Hollywoods fascination with Batman and Superman.

    Russia and the CIS, with a network of 100 stores in cities throughout the country.Today C-Toys distribution channels give it access to 135 cities in Russia, 17 in Ukraine, 4 in Belarus and 4 in Kazakhstan. This is an impressive tally but its worth pointing out that the total population of the 45 key-cities in Russia, where the company has permanent clients is over 41 million. And of that total 8.1 million are children and teens up to the age of 17.Not surprisingly, therefore, the number of C-Toys representative offices in key cities is growing. It is already present through local offices in Saint Petersburg, Novosibirsk and Yekaterinburg, but new representative offices are opening or soon to open in Samara, Kazan and Rostov-on-Don.This expansion is not just a function of the need to keep up with key markets, It also reflects C-Toys growing licensing activity. In fact as a licensee, C-Toys works with a number of leading licensing and intellectual rights management agencies. The partner list naturally includes European Licensing Company (ELC), which licenses Warner Brothers Consumer Products (WBCP), New Line, Cartoon Network and Marvel in Central and Eastern Europe.This alliance has already borne fruit through a C-Toys license agreement in 2007 with WBCP for Tom & Jerry plush toys and key chains with sound chips. The license is valid not just for Russia but also for Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.But awareness of WBCP properties extends beyond Tom & Jerry.     C-Toys was founded in 1994. It has long been considered a leading Russian toy manufacturer. But its big market breakthrough came when, in 2005, it was acquired by Detsky Mir Group. Detsky Mir is not only the biggest holding company in the local childrens market, but also the most popular and best-known brand name in

  • on a very different sort of property, have done well in the same markets. In fact, superheroes generally seem to have a growing appeal in the region. Marvels Spiderman, for example, is a successful property for C-Toys and especially popular in the Russian market.But despite its name, the company does not just offer licensed toys. It has a successful apparel business and that too is offering a line of Tom & Jerry branded product, while its new apparel collection for Autumn 2008 has a timely link with Batman, The Dark Knight. Images linked to the hit movie will feature on a wide variety of jeans, denim jackets, knitted jackets and vests, shirts and t-shirts available from August 2008. This success is all the more impressive when you consider that this is not the easiest of markets to operate in. Aside from its vast size there is the legal requirement that all license contracts are subject to state registration. A minor inconvenience, you might argue, but add to that the absence of information about registration of rights to trademarks in the Russian Federation territory and the apparently uncontrolled counterfeit product market, and you have a tough working environment.But its one that cannot be ignored, whatever the challenges and heres why. When 2007 was declared Year of the Family by the Russian Government, it did more than just add to social advertising on TV and billboards. It raised awareness of a fast-expanding market. The potential of the childrens market from preschool, to tweens and beyond is growing in Russia. And as it grows, more attention is being paid to making consumer products attractive both to kids and their parents. It has even reached the point where local shows are being developed with an eye to licensing shows like the hit Smeshariki.The emergence of local character licensing may seem like a problem for characters entering the market from overseas. However, this is far from the case. It merely proves the vibrancy of the Russian market and growing awareness of licensing potential both at consumer and retail level. And, through companies like C-Toys and licensors like ELC, that potential is sure to grow. This history lesson is far from over.

The product is unique for the Polish market and consists of palatable toffee candies with a vitamin-filled center. Scooby-Doo vitamins are available in pharmacies and modern trade with a suggested dosage of 5 candies per day.     &2/-0)#452%34/0!34!Tweety, Bugs Bunny, Superman and Batman have a new home, courtesy of Arbel Gida, the pasta dish. Arbel Gida was founded in 1961. Today, as a major producer of pulses and pasta, it is one of Turkeys biggest food exporters and among the largest 500 firms in the country. It also believes in innovative marketing, as its recent partnership with Lisans A.S. shows. The company has now got together with Lisans client WBCP on a new series of licensed pasta products targeting kids.
