July WWW.MODESTOSKICLUB.COM Volume 165 July 2017 HELLO FELLOW CLUB MEMBERS: HELLO FELLOW CLUB MEMBERS: Whew, this past June was certainly a sizzler! It is difficult to think about doing anything outside when triple-digit-phobia strikes! But weather never slowed down the Modesto Ski Club, so we have lots of activities planned for this summer. There’s the ever popular first ever Pinecrest Lake Hike and Bar B Q on July 22nd with Jim Sylvia and Bill Silveira. In August, you don’t want to miss our traditional outing with Norm Azevedo to the Coliseum to see the Oakland A’s play against the Orioles on August 12. September 5 will be our romantically themed “Moonlight Kayak” under a full moon at Lodi Lake with Cheryl Kelly. So slather on the sun screen (or moon screen as the case may be) and get signed up! What can they possibly be doing in those meetings? Ever wonder what goes on at the monthly board meetings? Well you should, because its YOUR ski club. With that in mind, the Board has decided to make the board meeting minutes accessible to all members by putting them on the Modesto Ski Club Web page at http://modestoskiclub.com in the members area. You will need the password to access the members area which you can get by emailing any board member or asking anyone at the next meeting. Wanna be a Reno Volunteer? Reno is not only the “Biggest Little City in the World,” it’s the sight of next year’s Far West Ski Association Annual Convention, and the Bay Area Council (to which Modesto belongs) is hosting it! BAC will need volunteers to arrange and supervise recreational activities, man (and woman) the check-in tables (shouldn’t that actually be “person” the tables?), and a host of other organizational activities. The Board decided to establish a volunteer committee to assist at the convention, and Maarten Vandermeer has generously agreed to be the chairman! If you are interested in being a big shot at the convention, please contact Maarten, and he’ll see what he can do for you. Calling all FaceBookies! Are you a FaceBook person? Most businesses and nonprofits have one, and the Board has decided that it’s time we did too. It’s a great way to stay in touch with other members, share experiences and pictures in real time, and arrange to meet friends for individual get-togethers. But first we need a Facebook Meister to set it up and supervise it. Interested? Get ahold of me at the next meeting or email me at my address below. We need you! We’ll see everybody at the next summer pot-luck-bar-b-q on July 11, once again generously hosted by Dave Garcez & Cheryl Bonani (508 Bellwood Lane, Modesto, (209-521-8349) ([email protected]). Please show your appreciation by RSVPing no later than Friday, July 7, so that they may adequately prepare. LODGE NEWS

Greetings from the Lodge!! Wow, has summer arrived. Triple digit heat here in the Valley. Make plans to visit Truckee to get out of this valley oven. Here are a few dates that members have reserved for “Group Reservations”. What this means is they have more than 15 people reserved and have the entire lodge for their group, so no regular reservations can be accepted for the following dates. There are 3 weekends that this will occur: August 4-6, 2017, August 18-20, 2017 & September 7-10, 2017. Check your calendar to see when a trip to Truckee will work for you and let me know before more weekends are taken by Group Reservations.

We have new windows at the Lodge. Be sure to take note they close differently than our old windows. The Trustees and group of 8 installed them the 2nd weekend of June. Thanks to all for your hard work.

Just a reminder about doing your part when staying at the Lodge. Be sure to always turn lights off when not in a room or area at the Lodge. Close and lock all windows and blinds before you leave for home. Dump trash and clean up after yourself…leave the Lodge as if you were the next member or guest to visit.

Please let me know if anything needs attention at the Lodge so I can share with the Trustees. I can be reached on home phone 209-571-8125 or by email [email protected]

Thanks!

Michelle Nightengale, Lodge Chairperson

Happy July to all my MSC Friends! Well, it is heating up and so are our activities for the summer.  First, reserve the date for our 1st Annual Day at the Lake, Pinecrest Lake that is.  It is set for Saturday, July 22nd at 8:30am.  I know, it is early, and I know some of you don't get out of bed till 11:00, but parking is going to be at a premium and only the early birds are going to get a spot without having to park in a Galaxy  far , far away!  Please see attached flyer.

Bullet point:  Everyone meet up at Cedar Bar-B-que area right off the main road  past the Outside Theatre area on the left.  Look for a group of lost senior citizens and our MSC Banner flag.  Hiking around the lake and/or Cleo’s Bath will be led by our fearless leader Bill Silveira! Hint: bring bottles of frozen water for hike on the way back!!! (hint #2: it won't be frozen but icy cold).  Lunch will be @ 1pm.  Don't worry, I will be guarding the loungers, food, and Sangria.

BYO refreshments and ice; there will be sign-ups for side dishes.  RSVP to me: Jim Sylvia  209-262-8859.   Hope to see you soon and remember what Confucius once said;  "Stay Thirsty My Friends"

Public Affairs Panel & Guest Speakers June 10thPhotos & Notes provided by Deb Budding

Public Affairs Panel & Guest Speakers: Left to right-1) Ron Abramovich, Hydrologist, U.S. Dept. of Agriculture2) TV News Anchor3) Director, Squaw Valley Museum4) Moderator5) Author of two books about ski areas, one being Brundage Mtn. Resort6) Brundage Mtn. Resort, Manager (owner of Brundage Resort was in audience, not pictured)7) Ranger, U.S. Forestry (not pictured)

1) Ron-Boise has 12" precipitation per year; 20" of snow per year. THIS year it was 40" of snow! 80 Mountain ranges; Boise River is over 9000 CSF right now. This past winter was an El Niño with lots of snow and rain in the north, and dryer in the south. (La Nina is opposite). A rare and interesting development may happen this coming year with a 50% to 60% chance of another El Niño, followed by a La Niña. Dramatic shifts like this are rare. The last drastic pattern like this was in 1964.

2) TV Anchor-She has Ron on her speed dial! It's a delicate balance when reporting snow conditions: One needs to be honest when reporting, but must also be mindful of business impact to resorts and other recreational facilities. When submitting a press release:a) Brief message is bestb) Make it easy for media receiving your messagec) Purpose

Page 10: HELLO FELLOW CLUB MEMBERSmodestoskiclub.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-July...2017 on the Full Moon (Hosted by Cheryl Kelly) October: Angel Island Tiburon Ferry Bike Ride, Saturday,

3) Squaw Valley Museum-FWSA was instrumental in getting the 1960 Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley, and a museum is in the works. Partnering with SBC - Sierra Business Council, Truckee, CA.http://sierrabusiness.org/who-we-are/aboutSupport is welcome and may be financial, letters of support, and/or volunteer.

5) Author-Encourages every ski resort and club to write a book to document their history. (MSC has a booklet).😊

6) Brundage Resort-There are 18 ski resorts in Idaho and the ski resort business is flat (across the nation),

What are the ski resorts doing about it? Outreach!January is National Ski Month and Brundage does an aggressive (think very affordable) family package that anyone in the U.S. may purchase/take advantage of. Packages IN IDAHO include:a) Right equipmentb) Lessonc) Ski pass(See NSAA - National Ski Area Association). All youth in grades 5 & 6 pay only $15 and can ski free after that. Studies show that people generally get hooked on skiing at this age; so this is the age that is being targeted. Brundage also does out reach in Idaho  elementary schools. Their goal is to hook kids on skiing in 5th/6th grades.

MSC Lodge Window Replacement June 3-5, 2017

New Lodge Windows

With the help of a few members and a lot of hard work, nine new Low E and highly energy efficient windows have been installed. These replaced the old damaged and broken windows.

They are also self locking. Please don't slam them closed and never put any PVC pipe or wood dowels on these windows.   Always close and check the windows in your room or area and close the blinds before leaving. I want to thank Jon Hooper, Jeremy Farrell, Doug Ball, Bill Silveira, Victor Vandenberg, Dru Glover and Kent During. These gentlemen worked over 22 hours over three days to complete this job.

Also, Pat & Allan Ramsay, Pat & Ed Moody, Bill Hamre and John Clark who made a special trip to the Lodge to receive and place the windows upstairs for installation.

Thank you everyone that volunteer; that helps keep the Modesto Ski Lodge the treasure that it is.

Tim Hutton Lodge Trustee

"Joseph was once told he would never walk, yet at Day on the Farm, he plants seeds and rides horses," said Juanita Henderson, Joseph's grandmother. Our annual

event, ‘Day on the Farm” provides children and adults with disabilities, the opportunity to be honorary farmers. Each June, Jim and Patti Sanchez at Sanchez Farms open their ranch for Day on the Farm. Honorary Farmers rode horses, went on hay rides, fed horses carrots, had their face painted, planted seeds, listened to

farm stories, munched on popcorn, did an arts and crafts project, and then visited the petting zoo to pet bunnies, chickens, goats, and a baby calf.

This year, the 300 in attendance were entertained by Jack the Magician and served lunch courtesy of the Oakdale Lions Club. The Stanislaus Rural Fire Department brought a fire engine which children were able to see and climb. It is always wonderful to see the happiness on the faces of the children and family members. It's not every day most in attendance get to be a farmer! Joseph's grandmother Juanita Henderson, says it best, "It is amazing to see the smiles on my grandson's face at Day on the Farm! He was able to ride a horse and go on a hayride and pet many animals in the petting zoo. Joseph was amazed at the magic performed." The cutest comment from Joseph was how the first thing he did was check to see how the seeds he planted years ago were doing! Joseph's family is so appreciative to the Sanchez family for opening up the farm and all of the volunteers who make the day great. Click here to see more Day on the Farm 2017 pictures.

FYI…It has come to my attention that an extremely small percentage of the MSC membership actually reads the monthly Inside Edge. That being said, my question to you is: What shall

we do about it? Has it become too stale? Does it need a whole new look and a

makeover? Does it need to be “published” quarterly instead of monthly? ….. Sincerely, Marsha Silveira
