Tell us all about living in New York City. There’s nothing like it! From the bustling streets of Harlem, to the sax-filled smoky streets of West Village, living in the city of Manhattan truly felt like home for me. Despite the aggression of the typical New Yorker, I understood them and felt like I was finally understood, too.

Where did you get the nickname “Lady Nam”?That takes me back to 2010 when I was the MC for MTN at the FIFA World Cup. I was on stage at the Cape Town Fan Fest and my fellow co-host, Vukile Zuma, was getting the crowd of thousands hyped up. When he introduced me, “Lady Nam” seem to roll off his tongue naturally, and it stuck.

You’ll be starring in a new Mzansi crime drama called Doubt. What’s your character like?I play Unathi Mweli, a spoilt, affluent, bratty “It Girl”, whose insecurities are displayed as bitchiness.

The biggest lesson your parents taught you was…Determination. My mother says I was always confident, a quick learner and determined from a very young age. I think that is

something I got and maintained from my parents’ many lessons.

How have you learnt to embrace your body?To me, it was a journey of self-love, value and acceptance. I started to see myself the way God sees me, and from there it was easy.

What’s your favourite gadget? My iPhone 6. I’m obsessed with everything Apple, so until I get blessed with more gadgets, that’s it for now. H

Alan receiving the Venus Freeze™ treatment

Trend Alert: Skincare and Aesthetics TrendsIn the past, we had a Hollywood notion of skincare, and equated age-defying looks with plastic surgery and other drastic procedures. However, with advances in aesthetic medicine and non-invasive technologies, there’s a wide array of available treatments that can dramatically alter the skin’s appearance and keep it looking young and healthy. These current procedures, including chemical peels, Botox® and fillers, promise to improve the skin’s radiance, minimise the appearance of fine lines and plump tired, ageing skin while eliminating the fear of pain and require little, if any, recovery time. New procedures on the block are the thread lift (a non-invasive procedure where threads are inserted into the skin to improve collagen production and visibly lift the area) and the Venus Freeze™. The Venus Freeze™ therapy by Venus Concept uses pulsed electromagnetic fields that provide the added benefits of increased oxygen, nutrients, and blood to the skin as well as improve collagen production. “The mountains… the trees… even the streams are inhabited by spirits.” So said a turn-of-the-century traveller, who coursed his way through the bewitching forests of the Venda tribe, found in the verdant north of South Africa.

With its name emanating from the sacred lake of this warrior tribe who believe they can hear their ancestors drumming beneath its waters at night, Fundudzi by Craig Jacobs journeys into the forest in search of the supreme lightning bird.

Abstract renderings of spears inform the collection, slashed on T-shirts and bleeding on knits, while geometric markings characterise this modern African tribe. Traditional fabrics,

Janez on fatherhoodWhat do you love most about being a dad?

The unconditional love I have for my kids. Bedtime stories, morning cuddles and just making my family laugh.

You know what it’s like to grow up with a dad in the limelight. How will you manage this for your children?

I generally like to isolate my private life from the media, but I will guide my kids in any direction they choose to go. When they reach that stage, I will, however, warn them about the ins and outs of the media world.

How important is it for people in the entertainment industry to have other business ventures, such as your modelling agency Full Circle Model Management.

I realised many years ago that I wasn’t going to be a TV presenter for a long time, so what I have effectively done is build a successful company through my media career. I have two successful businesses I’m running at the moment.

The Ford Mustang

coverfeature

While Janez isn’t up for grabs (sorry, ladies), the Ford Mustang is... er,

was. You will have to wait in line to get your hands on one because the car’s release has caused waves of excitement across the country. Men aren’t the only ones getting excited; in fact, the very first person to buy the car 52 years ago was 22-year-old Gail Wise from Chicago.

So, why is there so much hype in SA half a century after Mustang’s first sale? Since 17 April 1964, when Gail made her smart purchase, the right-hand drive Ford Mustang hasn’t been available in South Africa... until now! Not surprisingly, the model has already been sold out through 2017! If that isn’t proof of some serious demand, then we don’t know what is. W

Father's Day spent with an iconic American brand -

Hello Joburg thought it fitting for our Father’s Day issue to pair one of our favourite dads – SABC3’s Man Cave star, Janez Vermeiren – with the iconic American Mustang. Ladies and gents, you are both very welcome.

And while the limited availability of the vehicle means that many won’t be seeing their favourite toy under the Christmas tree later this year, Janez Vermeiren got a step closer to his dream car. “I’ve been a fan of classic Mustangs since I was a young boy. In fact, I hope to own one. Mustang is an iconic brand and car,” says the father-of-three.

So much action in April It has been a big year so far for both our cover stars. Janez Vermeiren married his long-term partner, Juliana Vasconcelos, in January and they welcomed their third son into the world in April. No stranger to fatherhood, Janez shared some advice to all the new dads out there, “Don’t stress too much – being a dad comes naturally. A lot of first-time parents freak out, and my best advice is to be relaxed and as calm as possible.”

Being in the public eye as a TV presenter and media personality coupled with his travelling and work schedule takes its toll when it comes to spending time with his family, but the proud dad and dedicated hubby has his priorities in order. “No matter how busy I am, I always make sure my family comes first and I try my best to spend as much time with them as possible. When I’m travelling abroad, I make use of Skype, calls and SMSes.”

The Ford Mustang isn't just a car - it's a lifestyle

9Hello Joburg • June 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za

April was a big month for Mustang, too, and fans around the world celebrated National Mustang Day on the 17th of April. That’s right – Mustang has its own day, proving that, for many, Mustang isn’t just a car, it’s a lifestyle. Every year, those lucky enough to own one hit the road and unite in order to honour the iconic brand’s birthday. This year, South Africa joined in the hype, and Hello Joburg partnered with Ford South Africa, the Da Vinci Hotel and the Hard Rock Café to celebrate #MustangDay2016, and the turnout was something to write home about, so we did. Once you’ve checked out our website (www.hellojoburg.co.za) for pics from the evening, immediately make a note for 17 April 2017 on your calendar if you don’t want to miss out next year.

Mustang madness! The hype surrounding the Ford Mustang is thanks in big part to the creative way the car was launched. Originally a concept vehicle, pictures were circulated through the press, causing an avalanche of excited letters, asking if Ford would take the next step and turn their concept into a reality.

The world loves something new, so when Ford Executive Lee Iacocca, who spearheaded the development of the Mustang, introduced the car, he did so as a new line for Ford, with versatility as its key attribute. The Mustang was to be an economical, compact car with the style of an expensive European model along with high performance capabilities.

“We don’t claim the Mustang is a universal car, or that it can be all things to all people,” Iacocca told the press, “but we do believe the Mustang will be more things to more people than any other automobile on the road. We like to think that in the process we have achieved a new dimension in American motoring – perhaps in world motoring.”
