Introduction

hellotxt is an Internet service accessible via PC, browser or mobile phone.

It is a fast, simple way to update your own status and read the status of

your contacts on most social networks and microblogs.

hellotxt was designed to meet a specific need of Internet users, especially

“mobile” users: the evolution of the Net, and the proliferation of social

networks has made organising your online presence increasingly time-

intensive. Most users want to communicate with all their social networks,

or groups of them, in a single operation.

hellotxt allows you to update your status on all social networks, using a

browser, a messaging program, emails, text messages or a smartphone. Of

course, the updates can be selective, and confined to a single social

network or a group of social networks or microblogs. You can also upload

photos and videos to make the update more immediate and effective.

Last but not least, hellotxt also lets you access your page online, to read the

updates published by your contacts.

Registration

First, you need to create an

account by opening a window

to enter your email and

password (the password must

be more than five characters

long).

Once the account has been

created, the user name should

be changed (hellotxt

automatically creates a

numerical name), and you

should check the other profile options including the type of notifications

you want to receive.

Finally, you need to link the various social networks to hellotxt, enabling

them one by one from the screen shown below.

Facebook Pages

Install the HelloTxt Facebook application

Once you have enabled your social networks, you should return to the

hellotxt dashboard where you can configure your tags or enter your status

by sending it to the selected networks, and add photos, videos or music

tracks.

Configuring tags

Tags allow you to organise your status updates more accurately by sending

the message to a single social network, or a group of them. The

configuration window will open when you click on Tag, to the side of the

list of social networks.

Once the tags have been defined, all you need to do is enter the #TAG(s)

Page 8: HelloTxt User Guide

chosen for each social network or microblog, in front of the text of the

message. This way it is easy to select your updates, and separate work-

related messages from recreational ones.

You can use several tags at the same time, separating them with a comma

(for example: #fun, biz). The same applies to emails, text messages and all

other tools.

Email

hellotxt automatically generates a “gateway” email address that lets you

share status updates, photos, audio or video content by sending a message.

By sending a message to this address (formed of a sequence of letters and

numbers), hellotxt publishes the body of the text as a status updates, and

saves any attachments (photos or videos) on the server, creating a link to a

short URL. To prevent the signature from being published, just enter two

hyphens (--, i.e. the standard separator) in the body of the text, before the

signature.

Page 9: HelloTxt User Guide

Instant Messaging

hellotxt allows you to send status updates using the main Instant

Messaging applications: Google Talk, MSN and Yahoo.

To use this service, you need to enter the bot of hellotxt in the list of

contacts, and send the verification code.

Photos and videos

hellotxt allows you to enhance your status update with photo or video

content, either generated by a mobile phone or downloaded from a PC. On

some social networks (such as Facebook) the photo will be published

directly, but if this function is not available, hellotxt creates a link to the

image inside the status update.

You can add a title and description of photos sent to Flickr by entering "^"

in the message. For example, if you write "@John How are you?^This is

my new motorbike" the following title will be added "This is my new

motorbike". If no description is given, the default description is "Sent by

HelloTxt".

Facebook pages

Facebook pages can be updated as follows:

Users who have not installed the HelloTxt Facebook application

Page 10: HelloTxt User Guide

Facebook page you want to update

• Click on "Enable Status Update" (a list of the pages will be displayed,

and the same process must be repeated for each page)

• When all the pages have been enabled, click on "Finish"

Users who have already installed HelloTxt for Facebook

• Click on "Manage your Facebook pages" at the top of the screen (a list

of Facebook pages will be displayed) and select "Add" next to the name of

the Facebook page you want to update

• Click on "Enable Status Update" (a list of pages is displayed and the

Links

hellotxt makes it easier to send links to the status updates, and

automatically shortens them to leave more room for the text. Links with

less than 20 characters will not be abbreviated, and to avoid the automatic

abbreviation you must enter an asterisk (*) as a prefix.

Read your friends’ status updates

hellotxt not only allows you to publish your own status updates – you can

also read those of your friends in the section “Recent Friend Activity”, for

Page 11: HelloTxt User Guide

the social networks that already allow this function: Facebook, Identica,

PeopleSound and Twitter.

API

hellotxt provides a set of APIs (application programming interfaces) that

allow independent developers and software houses to create status

reading/updating applications for smartphones or other platforms.

Information about APIs for hellotxt is available at

http://new.hellotxt.com/developers/documentation.

About twenty applications are already

available, including those for the iPhone

(right) and Android (below). hellotxt can also

be found at the Vodafone Application Store.
