8+1+1 = SAFE!If you or your family plans to do any digging in your yard, follow these steps to stay safe.

When You Find a Gas LeakIf you smell, hear or see a gas leak, stay safe by doing these things.

Signs of a Gas LeakYou can find a gas leak with your nose, ears and eyes.

SightYour eyes can help you find a gas leak. Stay away if you see dirt flying in the air, water bubbling on the ground or dead plants in a wet area.

SoundListen for a noise coming from the ground or an appliance. It will sound like hissing, whistling or roaring.

SmellNatural gas has a rotten egg smell. The smell can help you find leaks using your nose.

Mark your digging area. You can use white chalk, paint or flour.

Make sure an adult calls 8-1-1 before you dig – even if you’re just planting a tree.

Workers will mark pipes with flags, wooden stakes or paint.

Use a shovel or hand tool when you’re 2 feet or less from a gas pipe.

Did you know we use natural gas every day? Natural gas helps us heat our homes, cook and make electricity. The pipes that PG&E uses to carry natural gas to our homes are under the ground. You can stay safe with these tips.

Mind the Lines: Electric SafetyPG&E has power lines above and below the ground. These lines carry electricity from power plants to our homes. After electricity gets to your house, it powers lights, refrigerators and even TVs.

Electricity wants to move to the ground and will pass through you to get there. It also moves through water, metal, trees and other things. You should never touch anything close to a power line, go near a fallen electric wire or dig into a power line under the ground. You will get a dangerous shock and could cause the power to turn off in your area. Staying away from power lines and having an adult call 9-1-1 if you see a power line on the ground will help keep you safe.

Touching a wire will give you a dangerous shock
