This record book, as all other books of a similar nature, is prepared byHelms Athletic Foundation under the supervision of W.R. Bill Schroeder, ManagingDirector. It is distributed without charge to high schools, colleges, press, radio and television, athletic coaches and officials.

Helms Athletic Foundation, with offices at Helms Hall, Los Angeles, issponsored by Paul H. Helms, Jr. The Foundation was established in 1936, with oneof its main functions that of recording the achievements of athletes in all sportsand all divisions.

This 24th annual Track and Field record book contains best marks of LosAngeles City and CIF track and field athletes over past years, past City and CIFChampionship Teams and present City,State and National Interscholastic records.

Track and Field Athletes of the Year are also listed for both Los AngelesCity and CIF, selections which have been made by All-Southern California Board ofAthletics since 1937. Names of all athletes selected as Athletes of the Yearhave their names engraved upon the Paul H, Helms Trophy, which is permanentlylodged in Helms Hall, Los Angeles.

HUBIE WATSON (JORDAN), RAY VAN ASTEN (BO-NITA) , & BOB BONDS (RIVERSIDE) SELECTED AS

TRACK & FIELD ATHLETES OF YEAR - 1960

1 Three of Southern California's record breaking track and field athletesover the past 1960 season — Hubie Watson, Ray Van Asten and Robert Bonds —were named Athletes of the Year in Los Angeles City and CIF Track and Field

when members of All-Southern California Board of Athletics made their annual selec-tions. All three boys broke city, CIF and state meet records this season.

This marks the second year in a row that Hubie Watson has been named LosAngeles Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Hubie set a city dash mark of 9.5win 1959 and was a double winner at the State meet. This year, under the abletutelage of Norm Forster and Jesse Florse, Hubie set another city meet mark of20,7 in the 220-yard-dash. This gives the Jordan flash both sprint marks in theLos Angeles City Meet record section.

Co-Athletes of the Year were named in CIF track for 1960. Ray Van Astenof Bonita High School set a new CIF Southern Section Meet mark in the 880 of 1:53.0and then set a State and National mark in the same race at Palo Alto when he dashedoff a 1:51.9 to shatter Don Bowden's national mark of 1:52.3.

Robert Bonds, Riverside Poly's all-around track and field star, won wideacclaim along with Van Asten. Bonds won both high and low hurdles in the SouthernSection meet at Long Beach and then copped both events in the State meet withrecord clockings. Bonds' new state standards are 13.9 in the highs and 18.8 inthe lows.

Ray Van Asten is coached by Bob Hailey, while Robert Bonds received hiscoaching from Earl Marshall. Norm Forster and Jesse Flores have tutored HubieWatson for the past three years.
