Welcome
As we settle into the New Year, we are excited to announce the launch of two
new programs – designed to help employers, young job seekers and newcomers.
Interested in learning more about our programs?
If you are a job seeker, call to schedule an appointment with an Employment
Counsellor.
Take advantage of our resource centres to put your employment plan into action ‐
visit us at one of our three locations.
If you are an Employer, contact one of our dedicated Employment Specialists.
Employing Young Talent
Over the next three years the government is investing more than $500M in new
initiatives to promote economic growth and lower costs for small businesses.
Through the Ministry of Advanced Education & Skills Development (MAESD) a
new program effective January 1st, 2018 will assist employers who hire a youth
(15– 9) to work on average 20 hours a week.
The program will be available through the Durham Region Unemployed Help
Centre and other Employment Ontario (E.O.) service providers.
Youth hired between January 1st and March 31st using E.O. services can receive a
$1,000 retention incentive at 3‐months and an additional $1,000 at 6‐months.

Save the Minimum Wage?
The minimum wage raise has been controversial to say the least.

Basic Income
The Province of Ontario is exploring the concept of basic income for those who
need it most.
Interested in taking part in the study? Ontario learns while you earn.

New Program for Newcomers
Thanks to funding from the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration (MCI); we
are building on our services to newcomers with the introduction of Path to
Newcomers Success (PNS).
PNS is geared to refugees, refugee claimants, and other vulnerable newcomers
with low level English language skills.
Working in partnership with the Durham District School Board’s Continuing
Education language programming for immigrants eligible participants will receive
occupation‐specific language and pre‐employment training, a paid job placement
and on‐the‐job coaching.
The objective of the project is to foster newcomers’ confidence and ability in
workplace language and employment readiness; and, to assist newcomers to
enter the Canadian labour market while responding to the needs of local
employers for job‐ready employees.

Tax Clinic for Newcomers
The Durham Welcome Centres are offering free tax clinics for newcomers from February 21 to April 30, 2018.
The Region of Durham, Social Services is encouraging all residents to file their
income tax to take advantage of under‐accessed benefits and tax credits.
Newcomers who arrived in 2017 are required to file an income tax return even if
they have not been in Canada very long or did not work in 2017.
Contact the Durham Welcome Centres for more information. A staff member will
help you.

Emergency Shelters
During periods of extreme weather conditions and temperatures below -15°, the Durham Region puts in place its Cold Weather Response Protocol to expand their services.
If you are in need of a warming station/centre, contact your municipality to see if there are any open in your area. Other than emergency shelters, the Regional Municipality of Durham does not
have emergency housing. Learn more about Emergency Shelter Programs in Durham.
Smart Cities ‐ Oshawa The City of Oshawa is involved in a major community initiative in partnership with key stakeholders.
The goal is to develop smart city solutions for local issues. In November 2017, Infrastructure Canada announced the Smart Cities Challenge requesting Canadian cities to collaborate with its residents, businesses, academic and civic organizations to design innovative projects that
address their most pressing challenges using data and connected technologies. The City is looking to the Oshawa community and stakeholders to identify community needs and project ideas. Participate in the Smart Cities challenge. Complete the Survey.
Amazon’s Right Choice
Durham Region is Amazon's right choice for a bright future!
In January 2018, Amazon announced the Toronto Region as a finalist for their second corporate headquarters. It is the only Canadian city to make the top 20. The Toronto Global Amazon HQ2 bid includes two Durham sites – the
Carruthers Creek Business Area in the Town of Ajax and the Pickering Innovation Corridor. Read more about the exciting prospect of welcoming Amazon HQ2 to the Durham Region.
Hire and Retain
On January 11th, the Regional Municipality of Durham hosted an event for local business - Durham Landscape: Hire and Retain.
DRUHC Executive Director, Maralyn Tassone & Pickering Welcome Centre Manager, Pam DeWilde presented at Durham Landscape: Hire and Retain
The Durham Region event was held in partnership with the Oshawa and Whitby
Chambers of Commerce and Ajax Pickering Board of Trade to provide information
to employers on the support available to hire and retain workers.

Centre and Pam DeWilde, Manager of the Pickering Welcome Centre were among
the presenters at the event.

Unemployment – Record Low The unemployment rate in Canada is at a record low. Is this as good as it gets?
Canada's unemployment rate hit a record low ‐ at 5.6% the rate is comparable to
records dating back to 1976.
Job growth in December 2017, contributed to the addition of 79,000 jobs
according to Statistics Canada. The majority were part‐time jobs ‐ 55,000 in total.
In 2017 more full‐time than part‐time jobs were created. A total of 423,000 net
new jobs of which 394,000 were full‐time employment.
In general, the forecast is good for Canada. Alberta's job market continues to
show signs of recovery with an unemployment rate of 6.9%.
Quebec and British Columbia have also been strong performers with
unemployment rates below 5%. In Ontario, the employment rate remained at
5.5%.
