Help for Today. Hope for Tomorrow.

Annual ReportFY 2009-2010

Dear Friends of HDSA

The 2009-10 Fiscal Year was an important one for HDSA, as the Society focused onstrengthening all of its programs by improved integration of all efforts throughthe standardization of all messaging and branding; improvement of communication andwork flow between the National Office, Regions and Chapter and Affiliates; and the adoptionof new technologies to deliver information to previously unreachable parties. This was driventhrough several initiatives and a concerted effort to expand the family services and access toresources for every person affected by Huntington’s disease.

While the Society experienced many successes in these areas, we are determined to do morein the coming year -- in both the number of people we reach and the resources we can provideto them.

While we concentrate on short-term goals in our annual “Plan of Work” we understand that inorder for HDSA to grow we need to address long-term goals as well.

Therefore, based on conversations between the Board of Trustees, Senior Staff membersand volunteers, it was determined that a new strategic plan would be developed to providea framework for the future of the Society. This plan will be developed in FY 2010-11 andimplemented in FY 2011-12 with the objective of creating a blueprint to provide even moreHelp for Today and Hope for Tomorrow to everyone affected by Huntington’s disease

We look forward to growing the organization and impact of our work with you. Thank youfor your continued dedication and support.

Sincerely,

Louise A. Vetter Donald L. BarrChief Executive Officer Chair, National Board of Trustees

HDSA Annual Report FY 2009-10 3

If there was a single phrase with which you couldcharacterize the work of HDSA during Fiscal Year2009-2010 it was “focus on the families.”

To put this into practice each HDSA departmentcreated a plan of work to expand the Society’spresence into more locations than ever before. This was one of the main topics at HDSA’s firstField Staff Retreat, in which regional directorsmet to discuss best practices and participate inworkshops on subjects ranging from data basemanagement to standardized branding. Trainingcontinued through the year via webinars andregular distribution of new materials through theField Extranet.

One way in which this objective was achievedwas through the creation of new chapters andaffiliates. The New York Metro Affiliate graduatedto chapter status and new affiliates in NorthernFlorida and Long Island were chartered.

In areas that did not yet have a chapter oraffiliate, HDSA helped individuals start supportgroups. These groups would be led by HDSAsocial workers from neighboring areas, or by anindividual trained by HDSA.

The Team Hope Walk program was another wayin which HDSA expanded its reach, while at thesame time raising funds to support programs ofresearch, care and education. For the first timea national corporate sponsor Lundbeck wasrecruited and the program included over 50walks. In many places, the Team Hope Walkswere the first notice to people that there was aresource which could provide help, and a way tomeet others with a common goal—to fightHuntington’s disease. In some places thisresulted in a support group being formed; inother cases a committee was established tobegin the formation of an affiliate and establisha permanent presence for HDSA in that locale.

One of the most valuable and popular programsever created by the Society had its introductionthis year: HDSA Caregivers Corner Webinars. TheWebinars covered a wide variety of topics, fromcoping strategies for caregivers to nutrition, how to apply for disability support and a host of

other topics. Community members were able toparticipate in the webinars by asking questions, and when completed, a copy of the webinar ismade available on the HDSA website, so it can beaccessed at any time of the day or night byanyone who was unable to attend the live session.

In an effort to expand the number of physicianswith a working knowledge of Huntington’sdisease, HDSA held its first CME program,“HD101.” Forty-five physicians attended theprogram, and a curriculum monograph was pub-lished. Based on feedback from the participants, plans are underway to translate the course to abroad audience online.

Another significant meeting brought together theDirectors of the HDSA Centers of Excellence. This

was an opportunity for the HD clinical thought-leaders to share best practices and developplans for the evolution of this program, whichpioneered the Team Approach to HD care and isa key resource for the HD community.

The Genetic Testing and Long Term Careeditions of the Family Guide series wereupdated, and The Marker and Toward A Curewere published this year to share important HDnews. All were made available in both print andonline versions.

More than 800 people attended the 25th AnnualNational Convention in Raleigh, North Carolinain June, making this the biggest convention in

HDSA history. As in previous years, HDSA SocialWorkers, Chapters Leaders and members of theNYA (National Youth Alliance) met the day beforethe start of Convention for intensive workshopsto learn about new initiatives and new HDSAresources. For the first time, the OpeningCeremony and Keynote Address, the Focus onthe Family Care Forum and the Research Forumwere videotaped and made available on the HDSAwebsite, so that those who could not attend wereable to view the three major symposia. As inprevious years, powerpoint presentations fromthe individual workshops were also available todownload.

HDSA continued to emphasize Clinical TrialsEducation over the past 12 months. A newsyllabus was developed for local Education Events, and a new program, “HD Diplomats” was createdfor this purpose.

The “Diplomats” are community members whohave participated in a clinical trial and are inter-ested in sharing their experience with others to an-swer questions and hopefully motivateinvolvement.A Clinical Trials section of the national website(www.hdsa.org) was created, and a “Local Clinical

Trial Site Finder” was added to make it easy forinterested parties to identify sites in their area.HDTrials.org registration continued to grow andHDSA worked closely with other organizationsand the sponsors of all ongoing clinical trials toencourage community participation in this criticalactivity.

The national website expanded its Researchsection and added a new Clinical Trials section toensure that the most current news in these areaswas available to everyone interested in the progressbeing made towards new therapies for HD.

The HDSA Advocacy Program reached new heightsin 2009-2010, with more than 5000 e-advocatesparticipating in the push to move the Huntington’sDisease Parity Act through Congress. In March,100 HDSA Advocates visited Capital Hill to meetwith their Representatives on HDSA NationalAwareness Day. Thousands of phone calls weremade and emails sent on behalf of the Act that dayby those who could not attend in person. By theend of the year, 153 Representatives had signed onas co-sponsors of the bill and there were very fewmembers of Congress who had not been contactedby at least one constituent asking for their support.

HDSA continued to expand its collaboration withother HD organizations on an international basisthis year. Staff and Trustees, as well as manymembers of the HDSA Coalition for the Cureattended and participated in internationalconferences, such as the EHDN (European HDNetwork) Conference in Prague. HDSA staff wereactive members of an international youth workinggroup and directed a survey of medical prescriptionpractices by physicians who regularly see peoplewith HD. HDSA was also very active as a memberof the International Huntington Association andcontinued to make its publications available foruse by other organizations who do not have theresources to develop them on their own.

HDSA is a community, supporting the HDfamilies nationally and around the globe.Whether online, on facebook or twitter, orthrough the personal channels of support groupsand chapters, our goal is to provide Help forToday and Hope for Tomorrow to everyonetouched by HD.
