MASS SCHEDULE

OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE 3

by Sr. Barbara Rund, OP

Last Tuesday evening, many of the parishioners and

staff of St. Hugo gathered with members of Kirk of the

Hills, Christ Church Cranbrook, the Muslim Unity Center

and Temple Beth El for the annual Thanksgiving

Interfaith Service. As I stood in Temple Beth El, I was

awestruck by the size of the space, which was designed

as a tent flapping in the wind. The tent architecture is a

reminder of the Tent of MeeCng, which held the Ark of

the Covenant containing the Ten Commandments given

to Moses. In the center of the sanctuary was the ark (a

golden tabernacle that stretches from the floor halfway

to the ceiling) containing the handwri:en Sacred Scrolls

of the first five books of our Bible (Genesis, Exodus,

LeviCcus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy). On either side

of the golden ark, there were two lecterns. Each lectern

was large enough for the Sacred Scroll to be placed on

it, and for as many as four people to stand comfortably

together for reading or singing.

As I stood and prayed in the expansiveness of Temple

space, I felt small and insignificant, the same feeling I

oHen get when looking out of an airplane window. I

became conscious of the magnificence and grandeur of

God, and my heart became full of graCtude and

thanksgiving for my life, family, community, coworkers

at St. Hugo’s, the opportunity to be of service in the

Church and the whole of creaCon. Throughout this

week, my thoughts have conCnued to recall my

experience at Temple Beth El, as I pondered the

Scripture readings for Thanksgiving Day and for this

Sunday, which is the last Sunday of the Church’s Year or

the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the

Universe.

On Thanksgiving Day, my family and my Adrian

Dominican Community have the custom of expressing

graCtude for one another. About a halfhour before the

delicious dinner is ready, we sit down together, one of

us begin expressing to each person present why we are

grateful to them, and this conCnues unCl all have had an

opportunity to share. For me, I have found this

experience to be an occasion and expression of

affecCon and love to those close to me on the ordinary

days of life. It helps me appreciate and acknowledge

those whom I live with. It is an opportunity to forget

the irksome pe:y squabbles of life and focus on the

expansiveness of sharing faith and life with one another.

This Sunday is the Solemnity of Christ the King, 34th

Sunday in Ordinary Time and the end of the Liturgical

Year. The Gospel for this Sunday reminds us that we

will be judged by the Son of Man seated on his royal

throne. The sheep will be on his right, the goats on his

leH. The good will be rewarded and will inherit the

Kingdom of God. We are reminded that God is calling us

to be people who care for the hungry and thirsty, who

welcome the stranger, clothe those in need and care for

the prisoner. Through our profession of faith and our

lives of service to others, we join Christ in building a

kingdom of truth and life, of holiness and grace, of

jusCce, love and peace.

mission to provide assistance in the spiritual growth of

our parishioners through knowledge of our Faith,

How Will You Prepare for Christmas This Advent?

Fr. Tim reminded us, and we all know, the importance of

preparing our heart, not just our homes, for Christmas.

To do that, because we’re all so busy, we have to

prioriCze God. Do we do that? If we haven’t in the past,

can we give a giH of love to the infant Jesus by spending

Cme with God preparing our hearts, reading where the

Holy Spirit directs us to go?

Visit our Library a6er mass.

We have hundreds of the Church’s greatest treasures:

books containing paths to God mapped out by the wisest

and most holy among us. Your personal Advent Spiritual

Guide on your Advent journey awaits you. They will

nurture your spiritual growth and instruct you in what

you need to know about our Faith to grow and share with

loved ones more effecCvely. Our center table will be

overflowing with special books and DVDs to help you find

just what you are looking for among our Advent

Vision:

Archdiocesan Central Services is to provide strategic and

structural support to parishes and other Catholic

enCCes, and to model the personal, spiritual and

leadership characterisCcs of joyful missionary disciples.

AcCon Step 3.3B Archdiocesan Central Services, Third

I affirm and support the following Synod proposiCon:

Build cultural competency among individuals, parishes

and archdiocesan leadership to acknowledge and break

down barriers that divide us including race, ethnicity,

In order to accomplish or support this proposiCon:

Training for all (i.e. Central Services, SHMS, Parishes,

Schools, Cemeteries, etc.) by December 2017.

2. I charge Catholic ChariCes of Southeast Michigan and

AOD Central Services Office for Family Life to provide

resources for developing a culture of empathy and

understanding throughout the Archdiocese, according to

the light of the Gospel, so that those who experience the

challenges of gender idenCty and same sex a:racCon,

will find support for growing as a human person in the

virtue of Christlike chasCty. Resources and formaCon

will be available by December 2018.

3. I will establish a working group to develop, on the

basis of St. John Paul’s teaching on inculturaCon of the

Gospel, an iniCaCve to express forms of Catholic life in

the cultural idioms of the AfricanAmerican community

of Southeast Michigan. This group will begin work in

February 2018.

giHs God has given to all the faithful to be completed by

December 2018.

Next Week: Archdiocesan Central Services, Third Priority

C, Catholic Schools (Unleash the Gospel, Excerpts from

Part 5)

The prophet Ezekiel uses the image of a shepherd who

rescues his sheep to describe how God reaches out to

those in need. In St. Ma:hew’s Gospel, Jesus clearly

teaches His disciples that they must serve others with

acts of ChrisCan mercy and charity in order to enter

God’s kingdom: Whatever you did for one of the least

brothers of mine, you did for Me. These Gospel

direcCves are the foundaCon for the Church’s Spiritual

and Corporal Works of Mercy. Mother Teresa modeled

her life and ministry on these direcCves by serving the

“poorest of the poor” in the slums of Calcu:a. Like St.

Teresa of Calcu:a, we, as ChrisCan stewards, accept

God’s invitaCon to share Jesus with those we meet as we

strive for holiness in our lives. May her example of love,

charity, and mercy inspire us to open our hearts and

minds to serve and share our abundant blessings with

the poor, the sick, and the strangers among us. This

Advent season, adopt a family in need, visit a relaCve or

friend in a nursing home or assisted living facility, or

sponsor a refugee family.

NOVEMBER 26, 2017

"Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of the

least brothers of mine, you did for me." Today we

celebrate the feast of an unusual kind of king. Our Lord

Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, does not run his

kingdom in the standard fashion. Instead of insisCng

upon the pomp and circumstance that usually surrounds

earthly royalty, Jesus has a different focus. He thinks not

of himself, but of those he loves. And in today's Gospel,

his interest is especially focused on the poor and

suffering in our midst

.

Our King asks us to care for those in needthe hungry,

the homeless, the foreigner, the sick and suffering. But

then, he goes farther; he tells us that in caring for these

least brethren, we will be ministering to HIM! What an

incredible promise. Not only do we carry out the

command to love our neighbor when we protect those

in need, but we also show our love for Jesus in a direct

and concrete way. This love for Christ through others is

so real that Jesus actually tells us that our place on

Judgment Day will depend on it: "'What you did not do

for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.' And

these will go off to eternal punishment." On the other

hand, the "righteous" who ministered to the weak and

poor will enjoy eternal life. Our King has spoken loud

and clear. Now comes the quesCon of whether or not

we are obeying his orders?

Each of us is called to examine how well we are caring

for the least among us. SomeCmes, this means giving

our Cme and energy for special ministries or missions,

but oHen it means caring for those right in front of us

the sick or suffering in our own homes, families,

neighborhoods, or parishes. Whatever our situaCon,

may we have the eyes to see Christ in our midst and

serve him.

'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you,

or thirsty and give you drink?

When did we see you a stranger and welcome you,

or naked and clothe you?

When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?'

And the king will say to them in reply,

'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did

for one of the least brothers of mine, you did for me.'

Then he will say to those on his leH,

'Depart from me, you accursed,

into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

For I was hungry and you gave me no food,

I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,

a stranger and you gave me no welcome,

naked and you gave me no clothing,

ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.'

Then they will answer and say,

He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you,
