FIELD VEHICLES - Understanding Human-Wildlife Conflict and finding solutions Our team of dedicated Lion Guards encourage and guide communal and free-hold farmers to adopt the Namibian Lion Trust Livestock Protection Programme, a tried-and-tested ‘tool-kit’ providing a number of options to reducing livestock loss through predation. Essentially incorporating age-old methods with modernized, arid-adaptive farming practices, threats to domestic stock and the subsequent retaliatory killing of carnivores can be minimized, making way for sustained co-existence. Willing partners, including Traditional Leaders and farming communities, are gained through collaborative efforts; this encourages commitment over time which, in turn, generates confidence and success. Patrols, the building of protective ‘bomas’, monitoring of collared lions, rapid-response to calls for help in conflict areas as well as implementing preventative measures, takes our Lion Guards and Research Team across rugged and at times, treacherous landscape – to secure their safety at all times, the need for trustworthy, all-terrain vehicles with durable tyres, well-managed maintenance plans and the necessary Insurance and Licensing, goes without saying. Such vehicles, tyres and spare parts are pricey and the cost of repairs and maintenance, is high.

This 4x4 vehicle will be fitted with practical yet essential items such as long-range fuel tanks, water containers, heavy-duty springs and all-terrain tyres, solar-power system + back-up power-supply for communications, cooling facilities for drugs and medication, stainless steel work surfaces & storage space. Through our personal experience as livestock farmers, we understand the challenges faced when sharing habitat with wildlife, especially conflict species such as predators and elephant. The Namibian Lion Trust has identified the need for on-going community guidance and support in the form of improved livestock and rangeland management, as well as health care (e.g. eye infections, injury caused by predators, etc.) and animal husbandry, domestic dog and cat sterilization and vaccination programmes. To name but a few, large numbers of domestic dogs are infected with Canine Distemper (CDV), transmitting this disease to wild carnivore populations, especially the endangered African Wild Dog; domestic cats may breed with the African Wild Cat.

Apart from community support, this Field Clinic will be equipped to deal with emergency cases amongst wildlife, such as removing snares, as well as to assist our research teams with immobilization, collaring and the select relocation of large carnivores. The Veterinarian and a small team may spend any length of time in the field, depending on the need; in addition, in collaboration with the regional State Veterinarian, the field team should also be prepared to attend to the medical needs of domestic animals, since they form an important part of standard farming practices. Due to vast distances between urban settlements and the high cost of veterinary services, most communal farmers do not have access to animal health-care facilities. A Mobile Field Clinic could, for the most part, alleviate such issues and effectively address such challenges: financial support for drugs, fuel and a number of other needs, will be sought in order to offer this invaluable service.
