Tell me, if someone gave you gold- dust, would you not take the greatest care to hold it fast, so as not to lose any of it and endure its loss? How much more carefully, then, will you guard against losing so much as a crumb of that which is more precious than gold or precious stones? After partaking of the body of Christ, approach also the cup of His Blood. Do not stretch out your hands, but bowing low in a posture of worship and reverence as you say “Amen”, sanctify yourself by partaking of the blood of Christ. While it is still moist upon your lips, touch it with your fingers, and so sanctify your eyes, your forehead, and other senses. Then wait for the prayer, and give thanks to God who has counted you worthy of such high mysteries”. In the multiplication of loaves, it is significant that in the supply of food Jesus himself does not deal directly with the crowd. The distribution is left entirely to the disciples. Jesus is apprenticing the disciples to be ministers of the hospitality of God. The Church today takes on a dramatic adoption of listening every day to God in prayer and listen to the voice of conscience might be a new way in giving the lay people their proper place as ministers of God’s hospitality, in a sometimes boring, exasperating, betraying, mundane existence that is a gift from God through our self giving divine love. A final reason for bothering with the celebration of the Eucharist is that here God invites us to the experience of the deepest peace and joy that is possible- sharing in his own divine life. Dear Parents, Students and Friends of John XXIII College

Help Warm Up Winter The St Vincent de Paul is requesting the help of the College Community in their Winter Appeal for 2010. There are two main ways you can assist the St Vincent de Paul maintain their outreach to those in the Perth Community who will find it hard to combat the effects of winter. Chaplains Column The Eucharist is first and foremost a ritual meal, a sharing in the actions of the Lord Jesus at the Last Supper: TAKE... Preparation of the Gifts, BLESS....Eucharistic Prayer, BREAK.....reaction, GIVE..Communion, these four aspects or actions symbolize and ritualize the identity and action of Jesus Christ by the community founded in his name. It is something one does, not something about which one talks. It is a celebration of a way of life.

Talking about the act of receiving the sacramental Body and Blood of the Lord, let us listen to the description of a proper reception given by the early Church, Cyril of Jerusalem: “Coming up to receive, then, do not have your wrists extended or your fingers spread, but making your left hand a throne for the right, for it is about to receive a King, and cupping your palm, receive the body of Christ, and answer “Amen.” Carefully hallow your eyes by the touch of the sacred body, and then partake, taking care to lose no part of it. Around the Primary Newsletter, Week 7 Term Two Congratulations Congratulations to students from John XXIII College Primary School who have recently been recognised for their wonderful achievements. Year Six Leaders Shirts The Year Six students were today presented with their leadership t-shirts at a lovely ceremony in the Chapel. This was followed by a celebration in the Cafe. The Year Six students looked resplendent in their new t-shirts and they have already begun to wear them with pride. A huge thank you must go to the Year 6 Coordinators who put in so much time and effort to ensure that yesterday went off smoothly and was a huge success. Grandparents Morning Preparations are in full swing for Grandparents Morning. To add to the morning we would really appreciate knowing of any Grandparents who would be prepared to be Special Ministers, who are having a significant event (birthday, anniversary, etc) or who are visiting from interstate or overseas. Please contact either Mrs Gardner or Miss Coniglio with the information. Changes in Duty Over Semester One, we have had a review of the yard duties/supervision throughout the school day. There have been some changes made to the duty roster for teachers. One change in particular, will have an impact on parents; the afterschool duty time has been reduced from 30 minutes to 20 minutes. Therefore, at the Main Administration and at the Lower Carpark, a Primary Teacher will be on duty until 3.35pm. After that time, children who have still not been collected will be asked to wait in the Main Administration building or go to Jellybeans after School Care. This change will take effect at the beginning of Semester Two. Upcoming Events: Monday, 7 June: Foundation Day Public Holiday Friday, 11 June: Grandparents Morning Mrs L Gardner Cluster Leader K—2 Ms A Coniglio Cluster Leader 3—6 Year 1 Gold have designed and planted a vegetable patch in the Cubby village garden beds. The children had a wonderful time and planted everything from carrots and cabbage to eggplant and beans. Father Gaeten visited the garden whilst we were weeding one day and he loved it.

This is what some of the Year One Gold children had to say: Anthony Harcombe - I loved gardening with my class when we planted carrots, beans, cauliflower and eggplant. Joshua King - Father Gaeten was very

very happy when he saw all of our plants. Rosie de Francesco - We love our vegie patch because we're growing lots of different things. Kanan Miranda - We made our vegie patch so we can eat all the vegies.

The year 5 and 6 classes have been busy working on the creation of an endangered animal recycled sculpture for the entry into Scitech’s salvaged sculptures competition. The sculptures had to be made from 90% recycled materials with a climate change based theme. Year 5B created a Monarch butterfly, Year 5G the leatherback turtle, 6G the bearded vulture and 6B the Sumatran Rhinoceros, all highly endangered species. The sculptures were created using a variety of different techniques which the students thoroughly enjoyed. They made the most of their collected recyclables and were extremely creative with their planning of the final sculpture. Two finalists from each category will be selected in late June by a Scitech judging panel based on a photograph that I submitted of the sculptures. If selected the final sculptures will then go on display during the July school holidays and for the general public to vote on the ‘people's choice'.

Health Information ALLERGY AWARENESS – INSECT ALLERGY The most common causes of severe insect allergy in Australia are: bee sting (Honey Bee and Native Australian Bees), wasp sting (Paper Wasp and European Wasp) and ant sting (Jack Jumper and Green Ant). Other insects such as bull ants, ticks and caterpillars can also cause severe allergic reaction but are less common. This reaction is called Anaphylaxis, and requires urgent treatment. The College has several students who have severe allergic reactions to insect stings. Like food allergy, there are several actions or strategies that can help reduce the risk of an insect sting but we can never make an environment risk free. Children who have a severe insect allergy and are at risk of anaphylaxis need to have their adrenaline autoinjector and Anaphylaxis Action Plan for Insect Sting easily accessible at all times. Strategies that may reduce the risk of insect stings can include: Using insect repellents that contain DEET

( D i e t h y l t o l u a m i d e , N , N - d i e t h y l - 3 -methylbenzamide)

Wearing light coloured clothing that covers most exposed skin

Avoid wearing clothing with ‘flower’ type prints Wearing shoes at all times Avoiding perfumes or body creams/deodorants

which have a scent Wearing gloves when gardening Avoid picking up rubbish which may attract insect/s Being extra careful where there are bodies of water

i.e. lake/pond/swimming pool. Chlorinated pools attract bees

Drive with windows up in the car or windows closed in a bus

Keep your drink (glass/bottle/can) indoors or covered. Always check your drinks before you sip

Keep garbage bins covered – lids on Keep grass areas mowed (reduce weed such as

clover which attracts insects) Wear boots and thick clothing such as denim jeans

if ant sting allergic and in an area known to have specific ant. Avoid ant mounds

Not provoking bees, wasps or ants Have mounds/nests removed by professionals Students at school must report bee/wasp nests to a

teacher immediately Severe allergic reactions to stinging insects are usually lifelong. Some people who have severe insect sting allergy may be able to access effective treatment called immunotherapy or desensitisation. Those who are allergic to bee or wasp stings can discuss a 3 – 5 year program, which can help ‘switch off’ the allergic reaction, with a recognised specialist in the field of clinical immunology and allergy.

Alumni News Since Leaving......

Amy is a Loreto Past Pupil Scholarship Winner operating on a dog..... "Since leaving John XXIII College I went on to study Veterinary Science at Murdoch University. I am currently working as a small animal veterinarian in Hobart, Tasmania where I live with my husband Daniel. I love my work, am very passionate about the joy that animals bring to our lives, and hope to one day own my own veterinary practice. "

Legends @ Lunchtime Legends at Lunchtime started this week with Meneesha Michalka (Class 1998) invited to speak to students for the Day of Competence. The program is outlined in the attached flyer, giving you a snapshot of Alumni that have agreed to give up lunchtime to share their journey with students from Years 10, 11 and 12. Sessions include Charity/Volunteering (living out the Seek Justice Mission), Psychology, Law, Marketing, Medicine, Sport, Events Management, Surveying/Business and young Entrepreneurs; something for everyone. Students are encouraged to attend, to be inspired, to ask questions and share the journey of each of our “Legends at Lunchtime” Alumni. Parents often ask for interesting and relevant strategies to help their children stay safe when using the internet. This Federal Government initiative may help.

The first issue of the Cybersmart newsletter, Cyberzine, has just been published. A link to the newsletter is below:

Saturday Senior Netball It is very important that you let your coach know if you can’t make a training session. Your coaches plan their training sessions in advance and may need to adjust their training session depending on the numbers that are attending. If you do not attend training and have not informed your coach then you will probably get half a game only. This is club policy as it is a team game and you are expected to attend all training sessions. NO MATCHES played on the 5th of June as it is a general bye for the long weekend. The Members Association Championships will be held at Matthews Centre over the long weekend. We would like to congratulate the following girls who have been selected to represent the Perth Netball Association at the Members Association Championships, 17/Under team: Georgina Jolly, Verity Johnston, and Kathryn Franz. 15/Under team: Alannah Briggs, Celia Rosario and Kate Langton. 14/Under team: Lauren Islip and the 12/Under team: Jordan Islip and Charlotte Court. The magnificent restoration and expansion of St Mary’s Cathedral is now complete and once again, St Mary’s is welcoming literally thousands of visitors each week for daily and weekend Masses or to simply marvel at its history and beauty. Restoration and construction costs were $32.9 million. Archbishop Hickey recently announced that as at 1 June 2010, a remarkable $29.5 million had been raised through the fundraising ap-peal. His Grace called on the support of our Catholic community to help raise the $3.4 million required to “complete” St Mary’s! Donations are tax deductible. Special recognition applies for Leadership Gifts and special items such as the historic Pews are available for funding. If you can help...please visit the appeal website at www.stmarysappeal.com.au for more infor-mation or contact the Cathedral Appeal office on (08) 9427-0322.

The Tournament of Minds Competition is an Australia wide program designed to provide students with the opportunity to participate in creative activities solving open ended challenges. Students from years 7, 8, 9 and 10 are invited to participate in this year’s competition commencing at the start of Term 3.

Students are formed into mixed teams of 7, of mixed ages and can choose to participate in either one of the four categories, Maths Engineering, Language Literature, Social Sciences and Applied Technology. Students will be involved in problem solving and finding a creative way to present their solution to judges in a presentation which often involves scripting and acting, singing and costume design, culminating in the grand final at U.W.A.

If any students would like to participate in this year’s competition, please register your interest with Mrs McLean at Learning Enrichment by the end of week 17, Friday 11th June.

Women Who Lead – Knowing Your Worth, Tuesday 15 June Hadley Hall, Methodist Ladies’ College at 6.30pm Knowing Your Worth recognises that men and women often have entirely different approaches to their work, teamwork and negotiating pay rises. Both genders have a lot to learn from one another in order to create a harmonious and productive work environment, as well as enabling individuals to achieve their personal work goals. A wonderful addition to the original speaker line up is Adam Neal. Adam is one AMAZING guy who is the primary care giver in his family whilst his wife Tarita pursues her career as General Manager of Human Resources at Perth Airports. Adam and his wife Tarita discussed the important roles and responsibilities involved in raising a family and agreed that Adam would take responsibility for cooking dinner, baking scones for school events and running the canteen and their children’s baseball club. Adam is keen for men and women to hear their family story to ensure we all understand the choices that are available and how successful and fulfilling they are for each member of the family. Knowing Your Worth – a must attend event for both men and women of all ages.
