March 2017• Dover, Delaware
President’s Message Sue Hoecker
Vice President’s Message Mary Dawn Ditty
March Program
Augusta Cole Augusta comes to us from Richmond
where she is a popular quilt teacher. She
served as President of the Virginia
Consortium of Quilters, the statewide
quilting group. (As we know, Virginia seems
to be the hotbed of quilters.) She is
scheduled to teach at numerous guilds, the VT Quilt Festival, and
the John Campbell Folk School this year. We are fortunate to
have Augusta join us this month in Dover for her talk, “A Collage
of Tricks, Tips, and Tidbits.” We will get to see many of her quilts
and be entertained by her upbeat personality and fun nature.
Don’t miss it!
There are still some openings for her Tuesday, March 28 at
Wyoming Methodist. Email Mary Dawn at [email protected]
if interested. Fee: $40.
The Board is asking that each member take at least 12 tickets
($10) to sell or buy to help your guild!!! Our dues, stash relocation
and the raffle quilt sales are our primary sources of income for
all our great speakers.
Helping Hand’s Retreat is being organized by Mary Kokoszka,
and her committee. Attendance will be on first come basis. Be
sure to look for details and mark your calendar so you don’t miss
all the fun of sewing with our HH members for a multi-day event!
Augusta Cole’s visit to HH in March will lead us in a trunk show
of “Collage Tricks, Tips, and Tidbits”, followed by a workshop on
Tuesday “Cutting Bee Workshop” in which you may choose one of
10 quilt patterns to make. You don’t want to miss her different
scrap techniques. See details in newsletter article. Look for the
announcements of upcoming events…we have a Service Day of
Sewing on April 1, and a workshop led by one of our members,
Carrie Dobos, on April 22, too. You won’t want to miss either.
I look forward to see you all March 27th! Sue Hoecker
My Soul is Fed by Needle and Thread
Please join us every 4th Monday of the month at 6:30 pm.
First Baptist Church of Dover, located at 301 Walker Rd.
Our membership fee is $25.00 per year.
Michele Scott…what a presentation!!!! We all saw a trunk
show of Michele’s quilting career. Message clearing saying “you
can do it, too”!!!! Her skills and humor just shone. Twenty-two of
us enjoyed Michele’s Free Motion Quilting workshop, and I’ve
seen many examples already of member’s work as a result.
GREAT enthusiasm and skills shared.
Skills Forum for March meeting will be led by Marti
Chamberlain. Beginning 5:45 p.m.
Pre-meeting sale of magazines and patterns this month, led
by Elaine Morris. Lots to choose from…priced to sell! We will
also begin a QUILT KIT RAFFLE, fabrics donated by a member.
Don’t miss out on your chance to win this beautiful kit.
Helping Hands budget for 2017 accompanies this newsletter,
as approved by the Board at February meeting. As a reminder
to all, there are forms that you can obtain from Mary Kokoszka,
treasurer, for all expenditures. Any expense not budgeted must
be approved before money is spent.
2017 Raffle Quilt “Because of the Brave” was named by
Lucinda Mercier, and a pack of fat quarters won. Barbara Austin
has a team (all of us!) to sell raffle tickets and first venue is
March 18. ML Kaczka made a smaller quilt “Salute to the Red,
White and Blue” out of the donated patriotic fabrics. The Board
decided it would be second prize to the raffle quilt.
Sewing Day of Service on Saturday,
April 1 at the Wyoming Methodist Church
Free
Bring your sewing machines, thread, long
extension cords, and lunch for a day of
straight sewing on projects for other people. We will sew pillow
cases for kids, school bags, and receiving blankets. Materials will
be provided. (We are asking our members to donate 30-32 inch
squares of flannel to use for this project.) It’s a day of
interacting with other quilters and a day of getting to know each
other and fellowship. Sign up or just come. See you there!

Calling all EQ7 users and those who would like to learn how to use EQ7 for designing quilts and for making choices for quilts
designed by others. Cindy King, Barbara Sansone, and ML Kaczka will teach an introductory workshop on EQ7 on Tuesday, May 23,
2017 9 AM - 11:50 AM. We’d also like to start a sub-group within the Guild for sharing information among EQ7 users and learners.
At the March meeting, Cindy King will give a brief explanation of what EQ7 is and describe a trial version that will be available to
guild members for two weeks in May. More details about the May workshop are online at
http://www.helpinghandsquiltguild.com/may.html. If you’re interested in learning about EQ7 or already use it, would you please complete the survey available online at:
http://tinyurl.com/HHQG-EQ7form.
The survey will allow us to gather information from those interested in participating in the workshop and future events related to
EQ7.

Saturday, April 22
Our member, Carrie Dobos, will lead participants in making
Thimbleberries free quilt pattern, “Star of Hope” at
Wyoming Methodist 9-3 PM. (See the picture on our
website under April programs.) This would be a great time to

with workshop on May 4.
The meeting will be at St. Andrew’s Lutheran, 425 N. Dupont
Highway (Rt. 13 northbound side, just after Green Turtle
Restaurant.)
Our May 3 speaker, Philippa Naylor, comes from England.
She is traveling here to teach at the Paducah Quilt Show,
then visiting the Annapolis Quilt Guild. We have this unusual
opportunity to have a well-known speaker because she is in
the area and we are accommodating her travel schedule.
Don’t miss her!
Workshop on May 4 at Wyoming Methodist.
Philippa’s workshop is entitled "Finish Line, Unusual, Creative and
Clever Ways to Complete your Quilts.” This will be a technique
workshop. Philippa will share some of her finishing secrets which
help to make her quilts to special. I am expecting new techniques
and a different slant to quilting from Philippa.
There are still openings in her workshop. Sign up at the March
meeting! Please, be prepared to pay $40 when you enroll.
You will learn how to make narrow Rouleau strips (pictured below)
and many ways to create interesting kinds of prairie points for
borders with pizazz!

(No sewing machines needed) $15
We are going to have two workshop sessions on May 23.
From 9-11:45, Cindy King, ML Kaczka and Barbara Sansone will
lead a session explaining the use of Electric Quilt 7. This is a
computer design program. Come try it and learn what this is
about!
At noon, Mary Kokoszka will lead us in a hand applique session.
If you want to learn more about one technique to hand applique,
come join in.
Our sincere thanks to our members for planning and leading these
useful, learning sessions!
March 18 ...National Quilting Day
Do something special to
share your love of
Quilting.
Workshop Fees Fees for all-day workshops are $40 payable to
the guild when you sign up. Half day is $25.
Member led workshops are $15 to cover guild
costs.
FYI: Helping Hands wants to be a FRIENDLY, WELCOMING guild. We
are so happy to encourage visitors, new members, and those who want
to try us out.
In an effort to be “fair” to our dues-paying members, the board has
set the following fees:
$5 visitor fee for meetings with speakers. Dues will become $20
(instead of $25) if visitors join at the next meeting.
$10 extra VISITOR charge for workshops (Normally $40
workshops become $50 to non-dues paying attendees.)

The deadline for quilt registration is May 15, 2017. Their first show was great, and this one sounds even better. The forms for
quilt registration can be printed from the quilt show section. www.oceanwavesquiltguild.org/quilt-show
QUILT REGISTRATION GENERAL INFORMATION NOTE: Quilts in this show MUST NOT have been exhibited in any previous
OWQG show including Kent/Sussex. The Entrant must have made the quilt.
Helping Hands has very talented quilters; it would be nice if we were represented in this show.
Although I would prefer not to take a whole lot of fabric right
now, we could use any patriotic fabric or fillers for such if you
have any pieces...and we share such with QOV.
Thank you, Ladies,
Ann Fischer, Coordinator, QFO 302-744-9786
QUILTING FOR OTHERS next meets on Tuesday, March
14 and then on Tuesday, April 11...always at 6PM at the
Simpson Center on North Main St. in Camden. Please remember
to park behind the Whatcoat Church off Center St. We have a
big pile of work to do right now, so please come and help us keep
the process moving along. And please don't hesitate to become
involved even if you can't come to our meetings. Work at any
stage of the process is always available!
Our meetings are a great way to meet new people, get
involved in the guild, and get help with your own work (bring along
any questions and we will put our two cents in!). And as was
mentioned at the guild meeting, to practice your skills. We have
high standards, but we are not perfectionists, and we can help
you learn a new skill.
This Month we will be selling Magazines on stage before the meeting starting at 6:00.
Thank you for your support.
