As a parent, it’s only natural to want your children to do well at school. Give them a great start by encouraging these healthy habits:1

Make sleep a priority. It’s no surprise that summer can throw off sleep schedules. Most healthy children need 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night. Be sure to put away electronic devices at least one hour before bedtime. Establish a consistent bedtime routine to help your child prepare for a good night’s sleep.

Encourage healthy eating.AAbout 40% of total daily calories for 2 to 8 year olds are empty calories from added sugars and solid fats. An unhealthy diet can lead to childhood obesity. If you have a picky eater: • Continue introducing new foods • Be a role model for a healthy diet • Don’t use food as a reward

Beware of bullying, in school and online. Only 17% of childOnly 17% of children seek help after being bullied. Don’t miss the early signs: changes in behavior, academic problems, anxiety, depression and self-harm.

WWhen not to share: Avoid sharing lip balm, utensils, drinking glasses along with combs,

hats and hair accessories to stop the spread of

germs and even head lice.

MMake sure kids use a tissue to blow their nose and cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze. Wash hands frequently. You can pack a bottle of hand sanitizer in their bag

to use when soap and water aren't handy.

AAsk your pediatrician about an annual u shot. The inuenza shot is usually available by September or October.
