Helping our suppliers learn,

improve and grow with us

Recognising that our supply chain needed help to develop and keep up with our fast-growing business was the impetus for designing the Good to Gold programme. We knew it would be an ambitious project for us, as a relatively small player in the construction sector, but we recognised the huge social value and business benefits that such a ground-breaking project could generate.

Designed to help our supply chain to develop their business and leadership skills, we now understand better when and how we should communicate, give feedback or ask for help and advice on specialist areas. Importantly, we know how to get buy-in and engagement from our supply chain in return.

This is just the beginning. We have been able to create a vision of the Gold standard, and we are on a journey to improve our systems and working efficiencies. I am sure that our supply chain will reciprocate.

Robert Woodhead

LtdWe were appointed by the UK Commission for

Employment and Skills (UKCES) to work in

partnership through the UK Futures Programme

to develop and deliver the Good to Gold

leadership programme with our supply chain

businesses.

The UK Futures Programme enables robust

testing of innovative skills programmes, to ensure

that any learning is drawn out and shared to

maximise impact on other skills programmes.

I'm putting processes in place … and taken on an

Key Take AwayExcellent feedback from participants in terms of the immediate business impact of Good to Gold

Evidence base to inform future supply chain development

strategy

Improved motivation and

“The workshops gave me ideas that we have now put into practise. I have discussed the majority of the workshops with my

staff and they are thinking and implementing changes that run more efficiently. It also allowed me to discuss

problems with other contractors.”

Woodhead initiative

72.73%Yes, further

skills investment more likely

Almost all took part because it was a Robert

Woodhead-led supply chain initiative - a powerful

indicator of the influence that supply chain

relationships can have on skills investment decisions

A positive outcome in raising SME demand for

leadership training - most participants said the Good

to Gold experience would encourage further

involvement in development programmes

Supply chain partnerships provide a

major business-led opportunity for shared

investment in skills

Consultation on programme content is

vital to levy support from the supply chain

Training must be sector specific, partly for

specialist content but also to match seasonality and

pressure

High quality training is vital for engagement, high enrolment and achievement from

traditionally hard-to-engage businesses

Online learning portal support should be

available from the outset

Extending over a longer period would boost

attendance by removing scheduling pressures for

participants who are already time-stretched

Skills collaboration can reap wider business

benefits for all parties
