Membership HoldMembers may put their membership on hold for a maximum of three months one time per year.

Payment MethodsFor your convenience the Y offers three types of membership payment plans: Bank Draft, Full Annual Payment, and monthly payment. Monthly payments are due on the 1st of each month. 1. Bank Draft is an automatic monthly withdrawal from your checking, savings, or Credit Card account. We will need a copy of a voided check and the fi rst month’s payment to begin. This plan is perpetual, which means once started it runs continuously until you decide to stop. To terminate or change a Bank Draft membership see the Cancellation Policy. 2. Full Annual Payment is paid upon purchasing or renewing a membership by cash, check or credit card. 3. The monthly payment plan offers members the opportunity to pay for their annual membership by the month. Payment must be received by the 10th of each month, no invoices will be sent. Payment received after the 10th will have a $10 late fee added to the balance due. The membership is perpetual. To cancel see Cancellation Policy.

Cancellation PolicyTo terminate or change a Bank Draft or monthly membership, you are required to complete a cancellation/change form at the Burlington Y. This notifi cation must be received by the last day of the month to be effective for the following month. Informing the Y of your cancellation rather than simply stopping payment will keep your record accurate and prevent late fees from being added to your membership record unnecessarily.

Refund PolicyMembership and activation fees are non-refundable. Program fees are refundable only if the YMCA cancels the class. Credits are given for doctor substantiated reasons and then only for the portion of fees unused after written notifi cation.

WATER FITNESS CLASSESWater fi tness classes can benefi t individuals who are just starting to exercise, as well as those who would like a more intense workout (each person exercises at his/her own pace). Water exercises put less stress on joints than land exercises because the effects of gravity are minimized. Working against water resistance improves muscle strength and tone and cardiorespiratory endurance. Swimming skills are not needed for participation.

Aquatic StaffKaren Thie has been an Aquatic Director since 1995 and has been at the Burlington Y since 2006. She is a 1992 graduate of Iowa State University with a BA in Leisure Studies. She is faculty with the YMCA of the USA for YMCA Lifeguards, Swimming Lessons and is an instructor in CPR, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen Administration. Karen has been involved in teaching aquatic classes for over 25 years.

Special GroupsLarge groups that consistently come to the pool must be arranged with the Aquatic Director in advance.

ATICSCIRCLE SWIMMINGWhat is Circle Swimming?Circle Swimming is basically Follow the Leader and is used when there are 2 or more swimmers wanting to use the same lane. Always check with the other swimmer(s) to let them know you would like to circle swim. After getting the go ahead, enter the water. Always swim on the right side of the lane. Be sure not to swim over the black line, as this will be used as a sort of passing lane.

For safety reasons, leave a 5-10 second interval between you and the swimmer in front of you. If you need to pass the swimmer in front of you, carefully check for oncoming swimmers. Then swim out and around and back in to your lane quickly, always checking for oncoming swimmers, as they have the right of way.

When you get to the wall to turn, do so quickly and get off to the right side of the lane. If you stop to rest get as far into the corner of the lane as possible and watch out for your fellow swimmers.

Confused? Visit with a lifeguard and they can help you out. See diagram below of what circle swimming looks like.

SWIM CHALLENGE #4Let’s swim the length of the Berlin Wall! We will begin our journey on September 7th. If you are successful in swimming the full 87 miles by December 24th you will receive a YMCA water bottle, perfect for pool side use.

This is for members only. Registration: September 7-November 20Fee: $10

POOCHIE PLUNGEOn Saturday, August 15 from 2:30-3:30pm the pool will be closed to humans. Why you ask? Because the pool will go to the dogs! Enter through the east side door (will be marked) and bring your 4 legged babies with you. For human health reasons, you will not be allowed to swim with your pooch. Owners are responsible for their pet’s behavior and any “messes” made. Please keep your dog on a leash for everyone’s safety!

Fee: $5 and pet item to be donated to the Des Moines County Humane Society.

All are welcome!

SAQUATICSPlease note that all aquatics programs are subject to change due to low enrollment. Classes with low enrollment will be combined with a similar class or cancelled, Any water fi tness class with less than 3 participants enrolled will be canceled for the session and class fees will be credited.

Swim AssessmentsSwim assessments are for those who are unsure for which level to register. Participants need to come prepared to get in the pool for 10-15 minutes. Call the Aquatic Director at 753-6734 ext. 126 to set up an appointment.Ages: 3 years and older Fee: NoneSchedule: By appointment only

A NOTE ABOUT SWIM LESSONS: In our new swimming lesson format you will see class sizes between 2 and 4 swimmers per instructor. With this lower ratio of students to instructors, we are also shortening the class length, due to the intensity of a smaller class size. Classes will now be 30 minutes long. We will do our best to keep levels separate, but may have to combine classes with enrollments of less than 2 students. If we are not able to combine, the class will be cancelled and a credit or refund will be issued.

You will see pool time maximized. Boating and personal water safety will remain an important part of the swimming program, but it will be minimized to about 15 minutes per session. Classes will begin promptly according to the class schedule. Being sure your swimmer arrives at the pool a few minutes prior to their swimming lesson will ensure that they receive all the information presented.

Swimming lessons are skill based and advancement to the next level is determined by the instructor throughout the entire session. There will be 15 minutes between group lessons to allow parents time to visit with the instructors about any questions. The best thing that parents can do to help their child succeed in swimming is enroll them in swimming lessons often and give them every opportunity to swim outside of the swimming lesson. Swimming with family and friends provides a great chance to practice skills and develop strength and endurance outside of swimming lessons.
