This year is very specific for all athletes asthey anticipate two exceptional tops ofthe season. European Championships inHelsinki and Olympic Games in London. Iam glad that Finnish capital Helsinki hostsEuropean Championships because Finnishpeople are true sport nation, and I wouldsay they are especially athletic nation.They like athletics and are great fans.

Helsinki itself is capital promised to Czechathletes, it was witness of several fantas-tic Czech achievements. We should re-member 1952 and Olympic Games whereEmil Zatopek won three gold medals in 5km, 10 km and marathon run. His wifeDana won gold medal in javelin throwand the couple became olympic winnerson the same day. World Championshipsin Athletics in 1983 was significant fromCzech point of view too, thanks to unfor-gettable world record of Jarmila Krato-chvilova in 400 metres and her goldmedal in 800 metres run. This WorldChampionships was golden also for He-

lena Fibingerova and Imrich Bugar. TanaKocembova, Remigius Machura andGejza Valent brought medals too. In 2005we brought three medals from HelsinkiWorld Championships thanks to RomanSebrle, Pavla Hamackova and Vera Cech-lova. European Championships took placein Helsinki in 1971 and 1994. Even herewere the Czech athletes successful.

This year’s European Championships willenter into history thanks to being the firstchampionship taking place in the sameyear as Olympic Games. I believe thismodel will prove to be good for the fu-ture. Athletics is a very sought sport in the„olympic“ year and I thus have faith inhuge fans’ support. To all athletes, I wishthe championships would fulfill their ex-pectations and I am looking forward toseeing thrilling duels and joy of victory.Continuation in successful results of fa-mous Czech athletic predecessors is all Iwish to the Czech team in Helsinki.

Jirina has always had a very close relationship to athletics, she grew up at stadium, her fatheris Frantisek Ptacnik, a Czech indoor record holder in 50 meters and 60 meters run, who parti-cipates in her preparation. ■ Her mother was an 800 meters runner. He was 12 when he started with athletics. ■ He tried all sorts of sports, such as basketball,handball and football. ■ In his junior years Tomas Dvorak (former decathlete and current he-adcoach of the Czech national team) noticed him and invited him to train in Prague. ■ Hehas been studying at Faculty of Agrobiology at Czech University of Life Sciences, in study pro-gram Animal Production. ■ He loves fishing, which allows him to relax from athletics andwhere he enjoys meeting friends who he does not get to see much in Prague. ■

Rostislav started early with gymnastics, later his sister introduced him at the age of 16 to athletics. ■ Hehas stuck to this sport thanks to the great team in his home club. ■ What he loves about athletics is sur-passing himself (his motivation are his younger brother’s Vojtech results, too, also in Helsinki) and beingthe best relaxation workout. ■ He graduated from Czech Technical University in Prague from Faculty of CivilEngineering where he has been employed. ■ Therefore he is not a professional sportsmen and athletics ishis biggest hobby. ■ Apart from that, he likes to ski and playing volleyball, once he has more time, he willget back to plane and car models. ■
