Talie Her Down The following poem written by Edgar A Guest is a tribute to

Comdr Howard Gilmore submarine skipper who gave his life to save those of his shipmates when his sub was in danger of being rammed by a Japanese warship

To the lustre of the Navy add another shining name Place Commander Howard Gilmore in the Navys book of fame In the glory of tradition where mans memory never slips He will walk the decks forever of our countrys fighting ships

On the topside of his vessel knowing well that he must drown For the safety of his comlades he commanqed Take Her Down His submarine was surfaced when a warship of Japan Hove in sight and tried to ram her and a battle swift began

Gilmores seamanship was quicker With a sailors skillful art He rammed the warship portside and he tore her wide apart Then machine gun fire was started so order Men below And as is the Navy custom would himself be last to go

It was then a bullet struck him and two comrades near him tried To pull him down to safety but he brushed them both aside For he knew one moment wasted might mean death for every man Take Her Down his last breath ordered just as swiftly as you can

It was done as he commanded and the ocean there and then Claimed another gallant hero who had died to save his men When youre taking shore leave sailor in the peace that is to be To the glory of the Navy tell this epic of the sea

When youre spinning yarn of courage as all sailors like to do Boast of Skipper Howard Gilmore he who died but saved his crew He whose name will shine forever in his countrys high renown On his submarine bridge staying and commanding Take Her Down

By Chaplain W J Spinney Friendship is usually brought

about by a companionship of one with another of equal age rank and inclinations each having some good qualities and virtues which the other recognizes and admires There may be comradeship among wicked people but true friendship is possible only among the rightshyeous

Friendship originates in the esshyteem of good traits found in a companion No true friendship can prevail among spendthrifts and idlers for they are not concerned about themselves and much less about others The same can be said of hypocrites and persons of ungoverned temper and of jealous people There can be no friendship among thieves they may be pals as their interest or selfishness finds advisable and profitable but that is not friendship

Worthy of mention is this strange phenomena more salutes were rendered during my first hour back in Fort Pierce than durshying my entire leave which included stop-overs at Pittsburgh New York and Washington

On the train one sailor yelled Ouch I got a kink in the back His friend replied Thats nothing Ive got two queens in the club car and at 58 cents a drink Ouch Im running out of cabbage

Some of the approaches to the dames are unique One guy pershysisted in asking a girl to ask him Whats cookin At first she gave him the cold eye and I mean it was cold at least nine degrees below zero Finally she yielded and asked Whats cookin He anshyswered jubilantly Chicken wanshyna neck

There Was a cocky arrogant bozo who had two drinks and told everyone to watch him make a nice looking gal He began Ahem Im traveling incognito I dont want anybody to know me Good looker responded Continue incogshynito nobody wants to know you Then he yelps Dont be unkind Im a bon vivant At which chershychez le femme answers Youre a bum something or other all right but dont annoy me After which he spent the rest of the trip exshyplaining in detail w~y he failed

Every four hours the men in white pass thru the trains serving ham and plywood sandwiches and battery acid coffee A few minshyutes later you are sure to see Bob Hope come along peddling Pepsoshydent At that Pepsodent spread isnt so bad ~n rye

BASE NEWSPAPER HAS FIRST ANNIVERSARY

The MOCK - UP Originally Appeared In Stencil Form

Special Issue Planned

One year ago this week The MOCK-UP Base news publication made its appearance when 2500 copies were distributed among the various activities The first edition was a 12-page stencil paper

The first publication also carshyried an editorial a message to the Base personnel sports and reshycreation church services a humorshyous column promotions notes from the various units and was replete with appropriate art work and carshytoons

In July of 1943 The MOCK-UP came out with a special edition with colored cover marking the semi-annual anniversary of the Base In it was carried a number of stories on the establishment and growth of the Base and was illustrated with numerous pictures

For a time the weekly stencil edition appeared but the demand for copies was so great that the editors began printing the first routine weeltly to hit the beaches on 27 August Since then the paper has been gaining popularity with time and on the first anniversary of the Base 26 January a large anniversary issue was printed This too had a colored jacket and was replete with stories and pictorials

It is planned to have a 20-page edition as soon as practical to celebrate the first birthday of the paper

8ARN DANCE AT TENTH STREET USO IS BIG HIT

Hog-Calling Contest Dance Among Events Girls Dress

Like Farmerettes

A number of servicemen enshyjoyed the barn dance staged at the Tenth St USO Club when the patio was converted into an apshypropriate setting for the occasion Howard L VandenBrand Slc of the Recreation Office described the affair as follows

With the aroma of hay the squealing of pigs the mooing of cows and the kicking of horses the patio of the USO turned out to be a duplicate of your favorite farm spot Square dancing was mingled in with ballroom dancing and the ever popular jitterbugshyging Camp Murphy orchestra proshyvided the music

With the GSO girls dressed as farmerettes and the men in their blues or whites middotand even a few khakis mixed in it proved a colorshyful affair

The door prize was a dainty black and white pig (grease inshycluded) Covered with grease this defenseless creature provided a hilshyarious race when a number of servicemen chased after the red ration points A Navy man capshytured the animal with a flying tackle and headlock

The next in line of main events was the hog-calling contest and the man with the Sinatra voice proved to be R E Gooch PhMlc

The service will maintain apshyproximately 150000 enlisted men and 10000 SPARS during the year Of these 80000 men will be af sea or on foreign duty by the end of the year the Journal said pointing out that this means alshymost 17000 men now on shore duty will be packing sea bags for duty afloat although little change is expected in overall Coast Guard personnel during that period

Best Way to Aid in Your Stay- and all has adopted the Eleventh ing Afloat Swim Coach

Brenner Comments

Grim experience in battle zones with underwater explosions torshypedoes and depth charges going off while men are swimming in adjashycent Waters has pointed out the greater safety value in the old fashioned elementary back stroke recommended and taught by Navy swimming instructors to all hands

On your back your body rides higher in the water and the soft body organs are protected by the skeletal structure of backbone ribs and pelvic bones On your stomshyach the soft organs have no proshytection against terrific concussion and push of the water following an underwater explosion

Swimming on your back is also the best way to rest and aid in your staying afloat for long pershyiods of time or in swimming long distances says Chief Jerry Brenshyner Base swimming coach

The stroke is easy to learn and requires a minimum of muscular effort when once learned In adshydition to this the elementary back stroke using a full arm stroke of both arms in unison coordinated with either the frog leg drive or the flutter leg kick is probably the easiest way to swim when wearing a life jacket

SWIM ON YOUR BACK Cardinal Newest Mascot At 11th Beach BattalionFOR REST AND SAFETY A flashy cardina male topknot

SWIM ON YOUR BACK Cardinal Newest Mascot At 11th Beach BattalionFOR REST AND SAFETY A flashy cardina male topknot

Chief Brenner is an old timer in the swimming game He was on the Missouri State team and was

Beach Battalion as his own

In Officer Country the cardinal has become a habitue of the shower and bath house and frequently amuses himself pecking at his own reflection in a shaving mirromiddotr
