Welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing summer. This school year is going to be

fantastic!

We have a few new staff members in the Elementary building this year. When you get a chance,

introduce yourself and get to know them. They are going to be great additions to our school.

  6th Grade: Danielle Roland

  Title I: Lauren Freire

  Resource: Emma Harris

  Computer: Josh Dean

  Speech: Michelle Hoxworth

  Paraprofessional: Michelle Kluver

The elementary school will be incorporating the solar eclipse into our school day on the 21st. Each

student will be provided with a pair of special viewing glasses so they may safely watch the eclipse. A

permission sheet will go home with each student to allow them to participate in activities that day.

Our school day will again begin with the students having free time in the back of the school. I would like

to invite students to eat breakfast and then come out to play. There will be lines marked for each

teacher that the students can set their belonging down. When the bell rings each student will gather

their things and wait to be escorted into the building. Middle school will line up by the modular

classrooms. Students should not arrive earlier than 8:00. This helps us with having the correct number of

staff members out for supervision.

Parents, I am thankful for everything that you do to help make our school successful; making snacks,

reading to your child, going over spelling words, the list goes on. Please feel free to contact me as the

year progresses. With everyone working together, we can make this school year amazing.

I can’t wait to see everyone again,

Eric Arneson

Hot Lunch

Breakfast is served at 7:45 AM each morning, with hot meals being served 3 times a

week. Breakfast is a great way to get the mind ready for learning. Both breakfasts and lunches

qualify for free and reduced price meals. Parents can join their students for lunch, but please

call the school and inform them so that enough food can be prepared.

The Hemingford School District will continue to provide great start breakfasts and hot

nutritious lunches to students through the National School Lunch Program the school district

requires meals to be paid for in advance. Breakfast prices for meals are $1.55 for grades K-

12, and $2.05 for adults. Lunch prices for meals are $2.05 for Pre-K , grades K-6, $2.30 for grades 7-12, $2.60 and $3.75 for adults and $.40 for afternoon milk.

Applications for free and reduced price meals will be sent home with students on the

first day of school. You must file for free or reduced meals each year. Students who were on

free and reduced lunches last year have until September 30th to reapply and can still receive

free or reduced meals until October 3rd. New applications should be returned as soon as

possible as the free or reduced meals begin the day you submit it. However applications may

be submitted anytime during the school year if your income changes.

REMINDER: All family accounts need to have a positive balance on the

first day of school for your child (ren) to be served a tray!!

No exceptions!!! Attention: There will be no extras after $10.00 owed and no tray will be served if your account is a negative $20.00or more.

Farm to School: For all the gardeners that need to get rid of the extra vegetables you can bring them to the school cafeteria. We will put them to great use !!

Hot Lunch News

Dear Students, Parents, and Staff,

Students have control over the food choices they make in the cafeteria every day. The school food service

staff will work hard to provide appealing, nutritious foods for breakfast and lunch. You choose what you

eat.  Please make good choices.

By participating in the National School Meal Program we receive reimbursement for offering meals that

meet a required meal pattern. Receiving this reimbursement assists us in keeping meal prices affordable.

This meal pattern requires certain food components to be offered. These food components include:

Meat/Meat Alternative, Grains, Fruits, Vegetables, and Milk. For each food component, portion sizes are

required though school may offer more.

According to Federal regulations, you do not have to take all of these components. Breakfast will consist of

at least three items on your tray. For lunch one may choose only three or four components, with at least one of these being a fruit or vegetable. The components must be taken in at least minimum

quantities for the meal to qualify for reimbursement. This serving option is known as OFFER VERSES

SERVE. The school food service offers all five components, but can serve fewer. The main reason for

allowing you to decline foods that you don’t intend to eat is to cut down on food waste and cost.

Jr. High and High School Students will have an opportunity to forgo the main entrée this year but then will

be asked to pick up a pre‐made chef salad or make their own. It will contain the three components

required for a qualified lunch.

Soup will also be served to Jr. High, High School, and Staff but will not count as a component. Elementary

students will have soup to look forward to as they approach Jr. High. This is for their safety (not getting

burned) as it does get hectic in the lunch room.

There will be a few new and different meals this year. Please at least give them a try. If you have any other

ideas please bring them to me. Hope we can all enjoy.

Thank you,

Phyllis Jesse

Food Service Manager

PHYSICAL EXAMINATION, VISUAL EVALUATION, AND IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS IN NEBRASKA SCHOOLS

Nebraska Revised Statute 79-214 (3), 79-217 and Chapter 3 of Title NAC, Control of Communicable Disease (Revised) require:

Physical Examination: Evidence of a physical examination by a physician, physician assistant, or an advanced practice registered nurse within 6 months prior to the entrance of the child into the beginner grade and the seventh grade or, in the case of a transfer from out of state, to any other grade. No such examination shall be required of any child whose parent or guardian objects in writing.

Visual Evaluation: Evidence of a visual evaluation by a physician, a physician assistant, an ad-vanced practice registered nurse, or an optometrist within 6 months, prior to the entrance of the child into the beginner grade or, in the case of a transfer from out of state, to any other grade. Contact the school nurse or call 436-1657 for information regarding free or reduced-cost visual evaluations for families who qualify. No such evaluation shall be required of any child whose parent or guardian objects in writing.

Immunization: Evidence of protection against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, Hepatitis B, and varicella, in schedules of doses conforming to state guide-lines, are required of all students in all grades. A signed statement of past history of chicken pox disease; including year of illness may be submitted to meet the varicella requirement. Beginning July 2010, one Tdap is also required for entry to 7th grade.

The cost of physical examination, visual evaluation, and immunization shall be borne by the par-ent or guardian.

The statute further provides that immunizations will not be required for a student’s enrollment in any school in the state if he or she submits to the school any of the following:

(A) A statement signed by a physician, a physician assistant, or advanced practice registered nurse stating that, in the health care provider's opinion, the immunizations required would be injurious to the health and well-being of the student or any member of the student’s family or household.

(B) An affidavit signed by the student, or if he or she is a minor, by a legally authorized repre-sentative of the student stating that the immunization conflicts with the tenets and practice of a recognized religious denomination of which the student is an adherent or member or that immunization conflicts with the personal and sincerely followed religious beliefs of the stu-dent.

(C) For measles, mumps, rubella, or hepatitis B, laboratory evidence of immunity, including name of laboratory, date of test, name of test, test result, signature of lab technician or labor-atory director, and date of signature. For the purposes of the statute, clinical history of the disease does not constitute evidence of immunity.

(D) A student may be provisionally enrolled in a school when:

1.The student has begun the immunizations required and continues to receive the im-munizations as rapidly as is medically feasible.

2. The parent or guardian of a student meeting the military requirement in section 79-222 submits a written statement certifying that the student has received the required immun-izations and proof of immunization is given within 60 days.

Please note: In the event of an outbreak of a communicable disease, unimmunized students will be excluded from school. Waiver forms are available in the school health office.

SchoolWay

Page 14

In an effort to improve the efficiency of school communications to parents and students, Hemingford Schools is phasing into using School Way powered by Jostens. School Way is a free app that is downloaded to a mobile device that will receive alerts sent out by the school. The communication will occur through School Way in the

2017-2018 school year and phone calls will no longer be made. As always, you can receive school alerts through the school

Facebook page, website, and local radio stations.

Please see the attached flyer to begin using School Way today! If you have questions about how to set up call Mrs. Wood or Mr. Arneson (308) 487-3330.

2017

JH Football Parents, Just a few friendly reminders:
