Polysiloxanes have extraordinary properties. They present a large step forward compared to traditional topcoats. Such benefits come at a higher price. So what do you get of extra benefits for the higher price?

You get a better corrosion protection and a stronger protective system meaning

longer lifetime, less breaks for maintenance and in total a lower life cycle cost. You get better decorative performance exposing your structure with a better image and on top of that you get a more environmentally acceptable system. In highly industrial areas and in chemical plants an additional benefit is the high chemical resistance.

The third generation polysiloxanes that Hempel is introducing now offers these benefits combined with Hempel’s outstanding quality and service level.

The products are formulated for tomorrows demand with high solids, fast curing and long pot-life and with much improved recoating properties. The HEMPAXANE family has a very attractive environmental

profile. It has high volume solids, low VOC, low HAPS and it is free of isocyanate and lead.

The HEMPAXANE family members are formulated to meet present and future legislation for solvent emission in all parts of the world.

The first two generations of polysiloxanes have now been on the market for a decade. Market response has been positive, however it has been a wish to get more flexible products that offer broader and safer over coating properties on primers as well as between polysiloxane coats. The third generation polysiloxanes HEMPAXANE CLASSIC 55000

and HEMPAXANE LIGHT 55030 meet these new requirements without sacrificing the excellent weather ability and high strength being the hallmark of this generic range.

The improvement in properties for the HEMPAXANE FAMILY is obtained by introducing an internal flexibiliser that not only adds flexibility, but also improves the other properties, especially recoating.

To meet the market demands from various industrial segments and various corrosion categories, HEMPEL has introduced the third generation as a family.

HEMPAXANE CLASSIC 55000 is a two-component, high-solids, high-gloss, epoxy modified polysiloxane enamel with excellent gloss and colour retention. It is a third generation product modified with an internal flexibiliser. It is recommended as an isocyanate free glossy decorative and protective finishing coat for use in severely corrosive atmospheric environment.

The superior colour retention and the fact that it is available in almost all colours maintains image of the structure. The excellent gloss retention and good chemical resistance make it easier to clean the surface. The coating is hard and tough which makes it resistant to impact and abrasion. It cures down to 0° C which provides a wide application window. The product has high solids which makes it economic in use and low VOC and HAPS, which reduces emission. Furthermore it has outstanding corrosion protection.

HEMPAXANE CLASSIC is normally specified with a zinc epoxy primer and a mastic epoxy midcoat. The dry film thickness depends on the corrosion category as outlined in ISO 12944.

The product is extensively tested in HEMPEL’S highly advanced R&D laboratories and test facilities.

HEMPAXANE CLASSIC 55000 has been exposed to numerous additional test programmes both in Hempel’s own advanced test centres and by independent laboratories and institutes.

Before a Hempel topcoat is released as a commercial product, it must pass a very aggressive test package. The practical spraying

properties are evaluated with different equipment to establish the minimum and maximum film thickness, thinning at different temperatures and visual evaluation of the film formation. The topcoat is tested on different primers and exposed to standardised tests such as accelerated UV weathering for gloss and colour stability, natural weathering, salt spray, condensation chamber and chemical spillage. Mechanical properties such as flexibility, hardness, elongation, impact, abrasion and performance under cyclic testing complying with ISO 20340 and ISO 12944.

The HEMPAXANE FAMILY has been used in a number of projects all over the world and on many different structures as described below.

BEIJING CAPITAL INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TERMINAL 3. 16 different shades ranging from yellow to red are applied on the supporting roof structure.

M.O.B.C TANKS on Malta for exterior protection in a highly aggressive environment. Gloss and colour is standing up extremely well after the first 24 months.

MENETTI CEMENT SILOS in Argentina protecting very large concrete silos and reducing future maintenance.

FOOTBRIDGE AT THE PISUERGA RIVER in Spain to protect and decorate the complex structure of the footbridge leading to the Valladolid Science Museum.

HEMPAXANE has been used on 4 rigs ENSCO 69, ENSCO 86, ENSCO 87, ENSCO 89.

In addition to these examples of major projects, which are illustrated throughout this brochure, HEMPEL has supplied

coatings to a wide range of customers for both objects such as containers, shopping malls, television towers, ships, offshore items, and port facilities.

When new products are introduced in the coating industry test programmes are the best way to demonstrate the properties of the coatings.

The third generation HEMPAXANE FAMILY has inherited all the good properties from previous HEMPAXANE products, however at the same time several properties

are significantly improved. This applies especially to the flexibility, durability, re-coating properties both in dry and wet condition.

HEMPEL offers the most advanced coating testing facility in the world. In these facilities any climate on earth can be simulated and properties tested under any conditions. Application properties are tested at different temperatures and with different equipment. The equipment is the most advanced and often digitised - ready for computer analysis of data. The staff involved in these testing has a wealth of experience in doing the testing and high competence in evaluating the test results.

Test results are also aligned with the practical world by HEMPEL’S

highly experienced Product Solutions and Performance department possessing many years of practical knowledge.
