Hempstead Public SchoolsTo My Hempstead Union Free School District Family:Welcome to the 2019 - 2020 school year! I hope you had a relaxing and wonderful summer. This summer the District has been extremely busy preparing for the return of our students to their classrooms. I would like to thank all administrators, teachers, and teaching assistants for being a resilient team of educators, who sincerely care and are dedicated to our students’ success. To our UPSEU and Civil Service units, our school décor and safety would not be the same without your commitment to our schools. Thank you for upholding a standard of excellence that provides a climate where we are better able to promote and support students’ academic achievement. I would also like to give a very special thank you to the Board of Education for making certain their efforts are aligned to creating a better future for every student in the Hempstead School District.
The District is committed to carrying out its mission of ensuring students achieve personal growth and academic success that will enable them to compete and perform in a technological society, as they become global minded citizens. In order to do so, the District must engage students, staff, family, and the community in a comprehensive, challenging curriculum, and effective instructional programs, responsive to each student’s needs and aspirations in a safe and nurturing environment. As our students return this fall, I challenge all staff to “be ready and prepared to receive them.” Our families deserve nothing less than our best when it comes to the education of their children. Our monies, talents, and resources will be used to better guarantee all our students receive an equitable and fair education.
Hempstead is RISING! Throughout the year, I will provide updates to the community as to the progress of the District. Right now, it should be noted that as of January 2019, the New York State Education Department provided Districts with their Accountability status under Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Three of our elementary schools that had been in accountability status for three or more years, are now in Good Standing. Congratulations to Jackson Main, Front Street, and David Paterson Schools! The 2018 Grades 3-8 ELA and Math assessment results demonstrated that more students are performing at higher levels of proficiency. Our middle and high schools have met their required Demonstrable Growth for 2017-18 and are on track for exceeding their required targets for 2018-19. The high school graduation rate increased from 44% to 57% by August of 2018, and we expect this year’s graduation rate to be even higher. For the first time, we had a group of eighth grade students who took the US History Regent, and we are excited to report a 100% passing rate. The rebuilding of Rhodes School is well underway and on schedule to open in the Fall of 2021. We weathered the Prospect School August 7, 2018 fire, and I am thrilled to report that Prospect has been restored beyond its original glory and is ready to receive our pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students this September. Progress indeed!
This year, we will continue to commit to expanding opportunities for all students in preparation for college, career, and life. We will attempt to accomplish this by: expanding our Advanced Placement (AP) and Career Technical Education (CTE) offerings at the high school, increasing the number of students in Regent classes at the middle school, creating Small Learning Communities/Academies in our secondary schools, aligning curriculum P – 12 vertically and horizontally and across content areas to the New Generation State Standards and continue the implementation of International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary and Middle Years Programs at all elementary schools, as well as the middle school. There will also be a big focus on STEM education programs for students at ABGS in partnership with Columbia University and expanding the Dual Language and Foreign Language opportunities for our elementary students to learn a second language. All these initiatives are designed to provide a more effective instructional program for students and promote increased performance for all students in HUFSD.
The District acknowledges that at the heart of our improvements are strong partnerships with parents and community members. Thank you for your continued support! It may be a cliché, but it truly does take a village to raise/educate a child. Lastly, I encourage you to please periodically visit the District’s website: www.hempsteadschools.org. to learn about upcoming events and happenings around the District, as well as take time to respond to the Parent Survey, so we can gain insight about your perception of the District.
If you have any question or concern, please give me a call at (516) 434-4011 and/or email at: [email protected]. Looking forward to another productive year!
ALWAYS… “Students First!”
Regina Armstrong Interim Superintendent of Schools
SIEMPRE ... "¡Los Estudiantes Primero!"
