In most cases we encounter, the answer is yes, but the steps you have to take and whether there is a fee or no fee varies and depends on:

Who are you? Are you the author or the author’s employer, or a reader?

Which version of the article are you requesting to reuse?

Under what license was the source article published?

How much content will be reused from the source article?

For what purpose are you requesting reuse? And (if excerpt or article will be published again) under what license will the new work be made available?

Are there special funder or institutional requirements you have for this article as the author?

Can I Reuse the Contents of an ACS article?

Subscription Content

Any ACS AuthorChoice +12 option (embargoed)

Reuse of article under traditional license

Under a more traditional subscription license, authors may reuse images and certain amounts of text from published articles in:

– Teaching or training – Presentations at conferences/seminars – Subsequent publications for which you are an author – Posting on your personal website, university network, institutional

repository, and conference websites*

As long as:

– The journal article is cited and a link provided to the source article – Modifications are noted – Reuse is not for illustration in stories NOT related to the article – Web posting is for non-commercial purposes

8

Subscription Content

Reuse of article under traditional license

Also, any author may post the accepted manuscript version when:

– required to do so (by a funder or your primary employer)

– you tell the repository that the accepted manuscript can be released at 12 months after first publication of the corresponding article

– the posting is for non-commercial purposes and adheres to ACS’ Ethical Guidelines to Publication of Chemical Research

– You include a specific statement noting that this is an accepted manuscript version, and link to the final published work.

For other reuse requests and readers reuse requests should be placed through the RightsLink system (*more next slide)
