MARCH IS CEREBRAL PALSY AWARENESS MONTH (Source: Centers for Disease Control)
Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of disorders that affect a person’s ability to move and maintain balance and posture. CP is the most common motor disability in childhood. CDC estimates that an average of 1 in 323 children in the U.S. have CP. Cerebral means having to do with the brain. Palsy means weakness or problems with using the muscles. CP is caused by abnormal brain development or damage to the developing brain that affects a person’s ability to control his or her muscles. The symptoms of CP vary from person to person. There are four main types of CP: ▪ Spastic Cerebral Palsy ▪ Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy ▪ Ataxic Cerebral Palsy ▪ Mixed Cerebral Palsy The signs of CP vary greatly because there are many different types and levels of disability. The main sign that a child might have CP is a delay reaching motor or movement milestones (such as rolling over, sitting, standing, or walking). Diagnosing CP at an early age is important to the well-being of children and their families. There is no cure for CP, but treatment can improve the lives of those who have the condition. It is important to begin a treatment program as early as possible. Visit the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for more information and resources: https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/cp/links.html
Q: Can EFMP assist with special education needs, such as IEPs, IFSPs, 504 plans, or SNAP/ IAT meetings? A: Yes. Henderson Hall EFMP Family Case Workers (FCWs) are available to assist with special education needs. Review existing documents and provide feedback (even
before you PCS to the area) Discuss parental concerns prior to a school meeting in order
to formulate a strategy, prioritize needs, and educate parents about local special education regulations or procedures
Provide families with resources, such as local parent resource center information, regulations, IDEA, ADA, special education rights, and more
Accompany parents to meetings, including public, private or DoD schools, county team meetings, early intervention meetings, Child Development Center meetings (SNAP or IAT)
Provide a monthly parent support group so that parents can share resources and provide feedback and support
Please remember to keep your FCW updated with the most recent copy of the IEP, IFSP or 504 plan. You can contact your FCW at 703-693-4172/6510.
