The GenericHengjie Li
Project One
Through Project One, a massing strategy is developed. Inspired by an excercise in which we were asked to build architectural models using mass-produced products from a box store. I came up with an idea to utilize off-the shelf generic architectural designs as tools to explore new designs for the next project. The generic architectural elements in Los Angeles, such as sloped roof for single family houses, roof overhang for multifamily buildings, typi-cal facade for different types of buildings, are inherited with its own cultural, functional, economic and even, aesthetic values that were tested through their freqent reproduction. In Project Two where we are asked to densify historic housing projects in LA to accommo-date increasing population, this idea is fur-ther explored by looking at different ways to organize, hybrid, modify these generic designs to accommodate emerging function, aesthetic, social and spacial needs. Moreover, through which, the continuity between the past and present are maintained and emphasized .
Project Two-The Generic Blend
The site of the Chaseknolls Apartment is in between the major commercial of the area and the low density residential of the rest of the area which is predominated by single family houses. The site stretched about 4 blocks long horizontally blocking pedestrians from accessing the commecial. Therefore 3 roads are proposed to cut through the site which are extension of the existing that are adjacent. Units being cut and the original carports are subtracted. The previously backyard spaces become ,now, main courtyard space and new surface parking is added to east/west side of the new blocks. New commercial/amenity units are added to replace the original carports in the form of single family houses that has open space for public access on 3 sides of it. These units also functions as major structural support for added resi-dential units that are stacked above. As continuation of Project One, the generic de-signs-single family house and multifamily units with cloisters are used to explore the massing relationship between the existing and the proposed at the current statege.
