Biographical Sketch Missions professor, Foreign Mission Board executive, author, and pastor, Dr. Henry Cornell Goerner was one of Southern Baptists’ most influential authorities on worldwide missions and evangelism during the twentieth century. A native of Mart, Texas, he was born August 5, 1908, the third of six children to Henry L. and Cornelia (Leonard) Goerner. Although Goerner’s father and siblings were Methodists, his mother was Baptist, and, through her influence, Goerner accepted Christ at age 12 and joined the Cliff Temple Baptist Church in Dallas. Goerner remained in Dallas for his undergraduate education, receiving a bachelor’s degree from Southern Methodist University in 1929. He attended classes briefly at Yale University before transferring and earning the Th.M. degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1932. In 1935, Goerner received the Ph.D. from Southern. Upon graduation, Goerner accepted a teaching position in the department of comparative religion and missions at Southern. In 1957, he moved to Richmond, Virginia to become the Foreign Mission Board’s Area Secretary for Baptist Missions in Africa, Europe, and the Near East. As the work of the FMB expanded and Goerner’s department split, he maintained responsibility for Africa, and later, for West Africa. Goerner retired from the Board in 1977. Goerner’s accomplishments extended beyond missions education and administration. He authored six books, including America Must Be Christian and Thus It Is Written, the latter of which has been translated into seven different languages. He was inducted into the Liberian Royal Order of the Friends of Africa and was an avid photographer. While he was a missions professor at SBTS, Goerner also pastured at Crescent Hill Baptist Church (1935 – 1940) and at Parkland and Beaver Dam Baptist Churches, all in Louisville. After retiring from the FMB, he served as interim pastor of several Richmond churches and pastor of Elon Baptist Church in Hanover County, Virginia, for more than 11 years.

Goerner married Ruth Vinall Paddock in 1932, and the couple had three daughters – Georgia Cornelia, Esta May (“Mitzi”), and Margorie Ruth. Dr. Henry Cornell Goerner died October 2, 1998, at age 90, in Richmond. Scope and Content Note The Henry Cornell Goerner Collection consists of 24 linear feet of material (1,042 folders) in 16

records boxes and contains material from 1889 to 1992. The collection documents Cornell Goerner’s teaching career as professor at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, and as Area Secretary for Baptist Missions in Africa, Europe, and the Near East for the Convention’s Foreign Mission Board (now International Mission Board) in Richmond, Virginia. Several files on bibliographies, class notes and lectures, Southern Seminary, and informational material on African, European, and Asian countries are included in the papers. There are also clippings from various aspects of religious life, including church and state issues, fanaticism, liquor, and state conventions. Missions activities documented in the Goerner collection include American Indian missions, work with the blind, Jewish missions, literacy, medical, and rural missions. There are also files from various missions programs at other institutions, including Baptist Theological Seminary in Ruschlikon, Switzerland, Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary, Spurgeon College, and Yale Divinity School.

The collection includes correspondence and informational files from the American Baptist Home and Foreign Mission Societies, American Bible Society, Association of Baptists for World Evangelism, Baptist Joint Committee on Public Affairs, Baptist World Alliance, Canadian Baptist Foreign Mission Society, Interdenominational Foreign Mission Association, International Missionary Council, National Council of Churches, Northern Baptist Convention, Southern Baptist Convention, and World Council of Churches. The breadth of Goerner’s influence on twentieth-century Southern Baptist missions is also reflected in the individuals from various denominations and Southern Baptist leadership positions with whom he corresponded. Included are files from D. Merril Aldridge, Henlee Barnett, Harold Clark Bennett, Walter Pope Binns, Jimmy Carter, Baker James Cauthen, Norman W. Cox, Wally Amos Criswell, Joseph M.
