As our students leave for summer break, we wanted to share some ways that parents can continue to support

their child in math and reading while they are away from school. In each grade level, students work to master

specific academic standards. Below you will find links to the complete reading and math standards for each

grade level.

*A complete list of the Tennessee Academic ELA Standards can be viewed at this webpage:

READING and WRITING

One of the easiest ways to support your child academically over the summer is to read with your child each day.

Reading with your child could mean listening to them read to you, taking turns with your child reading pages,

reading the book aloud to your child, or your child reading the book independently. In addition to reading their

favorite fiction books, we would encourage you to read non-fiction books with your child as well. When you read

with your child each day, you can continue to support them by talking with them about what you are reading.

Rhea Public Library is a wonderful resource for checking out books and participating in the summer reading

program when offered. https://www.rheapubliclibrary.org/

Below you will find a few topics that you may discuss with your child as you read with them or after you finish

reading with them.

*Vocabulary: What does that word mean as it is used in the story/text? *How does this book compare to the movie or tv show? How are they alike? How are they different? *Describe the characters, plot, and setting of the story. *Summarize (retell) what has happened in the story/text so far (written or through conversation). *Write regularly. You could have your child write about what they’ve read or summer experiences. Students like to write in a journal and share their writing with you. *Continue to review alphabet letter names and sounds with your child.

MATH

Below, you will find a list of some topics from kindergarten math that you could reinforce with your child by

continuing to practice this summer.

*Count to 100 by ones, fives, and tens; Count backwards from 10 *Practice writing the numbers from 0 - 20 *Compare two numbers (up to 10) or two different groups of items using the words greater than, less than, or equal *Solve problems involving adding and subtracting within 10 *Identify the penny, nickel, dime, and quarter and recognize the value of each *Describe the position of objects using terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind, between, and next to Listed below are a few examples of math topics that you may work on with your child in preparation for the

challenges of 1st grade.

*Practice counting (at least to 120) and practice counting backwards from 20 *Continue practicing the addition facts that make 10 *Solve real world problems involving addition or subtraction (within 20) *Determine the unknown number in an addition or subtraction problem (Example: 9 + __ = 11 OR ___ - 5 = 3) *Count the value of a set of like coins less than one dollar *Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks *Solve problems by adding a 2-digit number to a one digit number within 100 (Example: 42 +7)
