Construct task-appropriate writing for diverse purposes and audiences. Design and implement concise and sustained research tasks focused by questions and understandings of rigorous and relevant topics. Collaborate and communicate effectively to participate in diverse discussions, share information and reasoning, or provide supporting evidence to convey and/or respond to clear and distinct perspectives. Employ the conventions of language, including word choice, effectively in written or spoken word. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will include the study of composition, grammar, literature, vocabulary, speaking & listening, and research skills using a variety of texts from various cultures throughout the world. It will incorporate materials outside of written text. Some materials integrated are graphic media, music, internet based materials, film, and classroom discussion. CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:● Be on time.

○ Students who arrive to class late will face disciplinary consequences per AAS policy.

● Come prepared to learn. ○ Students must come to class each day with required materials.○ Students will not be denied food or beverage in the classroom, however, students will not

disrupt others or their learning by eating. .Students will not be permitted to leave class to get food. Students will not be permitted to eat meals in class. Students are expected to clean up after themselves. Students who do not adhere to this will be restricted from bringing food or beverage.

○ Students who exhibit behavior that interrupts others’ right to learn will face disciplinary consequences per AAS policy.

● Respect yourself and others.○ Students are expected to respect faculty & staff authority.○ Students are expected to respect their peers’ right to learn.○ Students are expected to respect themselves and acknowledge the positive contributions

they have to offer.

ABSENCES/MAKE-UP WORK:Being present and participating in class daily is important for success; however, if you must be absent please check Google Classroom for any assignments. It is the student’s responsibility to make up work and to make arrangements for missed tests or quizzes.

LATE WORK:Students will be given a final deadline when all assignments for each unit are due. Students will be able to turn in work without penalty up to that point. Once the deadline has come, no work will be accepted and will remain a 0 in the gradebook.

TUTORING:If students need extra help, tutoring will be available as needed. Students need to schedule an appointment for tutoring with Mrs. Tonya Clinton, Ed..S.

Cheating/Plagiarism is considered a serious matter. The parents of a student who has been involved in cheating/plagiarizing will be notified and the student will receive a 0 for the assignment/assessment.For this course, cheating is defined as, but not limited to:

● Copying anyone’s answers to assignments that were assigned as independent work● Copying answers to assignments/assessments from the internet (whether the

information is accessed from the computer or phone)● Taking any information, verbatim from any source, including the Internet, without

giving proper credit to the author, or rearranging the order of words and/or changing some words as written by the author and claiming the work as his/her own.

● Looking at another student’s test/quiz during the assessment period● Using test aids (study guide, books, internet, phone, etc) during assessment when not

specifically instructed by Mrs. Clinton.

TECHNOLOGY:● Google Classroom will be used for the majority of assignments/assessments.

Students will be required to join the classroom, access, complete, and turn in assignments/assessments using this platform.

● If a student does not have access to a county-wide issued Chromebook & does not have access to a WiFi enabled device during school hours let Mrs. Clinton know ASAP.

● Students must have their device every class period. There is the ability to charge if needed; Bring your own charging cord).

● If a student does not have their device during class they will not be exempt from assignments & will not be given extended time to complete assignments. Mrs. Clinton will determine a course of action with a student individually.

● Students need to make responsible choices while working on their devices in class. ○ If students choose to engage in other activities on their device that is not

relevant to class they will not be given extra time to complete assignments. ○ If students are found to be accessing inappropriate sites in class they will

be subject to discipline per AAS policy.

● Please be sure to check Infinite Campus (IC) on a regular basis for student grades. Grades will be updated regularly. If you do not have access to IC, please check the AAS website to see the steps for gaining access.
