WELCOMEDeveloping a greater understanding of HEOR and Market Access

I am frequently asked, by both companies and candidates within the HEOR and Market Access sectors,

for my advice about salaries, rates and market trends.

As a result, we commissioned a market survey and we have been delighted with the response. Thank

you to everyone who took part!

There was a huge amount of data created by the research and this report summarises the key findings.

We hope you find it useful and please get in contact if there is anything that you would like further

This research project was commissioned by Paramount Recruitment in order to gain a greater understanding of the workforce trends within the HEOR and Market Access sectors.

The survey was managed by a market research company utilizing a leading online survey tool.

It was launched in March 2019 and promoted by email and LinkedIn to all relevant professionals connected with Paramount Recruitment and the UK Health Economist’s Study Group.

268 responses were received, and the answers have been analysed by a market research company to present the main findings in this report.

Employers – Future outlook

There will continue to be growth as more importance is placed on health spending especially in devices, diagnostic pathways, single use instruments and other hospital activities that have previously been very focused on clinical output measures and not cost.

I anticipate growth particularly in med devices and diagnostics as many appraisal/reimbursement systems move toward the current pharma model

I can see even more consolidation of companies (Pharma and consulting sectors) with a possible move back to doing things in house.

The market is a bit saturated with consultancies at the moment.

Dependent on requirements of key markets i.e. the US and Japan going forward, but can see changing structures within current Pharma companies rather than absolute growth; and could see emergence of consultancies that specialise in new HTA agencies from countries that are new to the practice.

I believe growth will be rather on the consultancy than industry side. The industry is trying to get more lean and relies more and more on consultancy work. However, Brexit will play a role and it is hard to say to what extent any of these sectors will grow given economic instability and potentially decrease in migration.

The growth for consultancies will be higher as evidence and process requirements for Market Access increase and the need for highly specialised professionals grows.

I am not sure if the increase in number of consultancy companies can continue. Gradually, as more health economists are trained, the job market is becoming more competitive. The sector has grown massively and I expect it will continue to grow, but maybe at a reduced rate.

I see more pharma companies bringing expertise in-house, as HEOR/MA becomes important earlier in the development pathway.
