As I do so, and with the assistance of all members, I will build on the solid foundations laid by all of my predecessors believing that we must continue our efforts to revitalise the work and traditions of our Order and our Priory to ensure currency and growth. It has been an exceptionally busy start to the year. The Victorian Priory extends its congratulations to the Grand Prior on his recent appointment as a Lieutenant to the Grand Councillor, HE Bailiff Boudewijn Franck OSJ, a member of the Priory of the Low Countries. We sincerely wish him well in his endeavours to serve the Petit Conseil whilst also strengthening relations with other member Grand Priories, Priories and Commanderies of our international Order. Congratulations to Chevalier Dr Barry Edwards CGSJ on his well deserved promotion which recognised the enormous contributions he has made to the work of The Leprosy Mission (TLM), and to the many other organisations he is heavily involved with. Welcome to the 27th Edition of the Victorian Priory’s HERALD—the first for 2016. In this Edition we record and acknowledge the passing of two of our members; provide expansive coverage of the latest Investiture of a new Dame and three Knights in Geelong; the Installation Ceremonies for the Grand Prior of Australasia and the Prior of Victoria; coverage of the very successful Steam & Cuisine event; provide an updated Diary of Events and Functions for 2016; and Members News and appointments.

This is the first of many Reports you will be receiving from me during my term as Prior. My intention is to maintain clear lines of communication between us all – and I certainly would welcome and encourage any feedback you might wish to provide.

I am honoured to be elected to serve as the Victorian Prior and am cognisant of the responsibilities of the role. As I do so, and with the assistance of all members, I will build on the solid foundations laid by all of my predecessors believing that we must continue our efforts to revitalise the work and traditions of our Order and our Priory to ensure currency and growth.

It has been an exceptionally busy start to the year. The Geelong Commandery is to be congratulated on the highly successful Investiture

held in Saturday 27 February 2016 where a Dame and three Knights were invested into the Order. The Service also saw the Installation of the Grand Prior HE Chevalier Peter Wiltshire GCSJ, and the Victorian Prior HE Dame Barbara Abley AM DJSJ FACN. The Grand Priory of Australasia recorded its hearty thanks for the good work and wise leadership of Bailiff Emeritus Royce Pepin AM MBE GCSJ who has retired as Grand Prior of Australasia.

The numbers attending the Service and luncheon were excellent, and the impressive Investiture was recorded. Copies of this DVD will be made available to be distributed to interested parties in due course. The Victorian Priory was well represented including full representation from the Ballarat Founding Group lead by Dame Val Sarah AM DSJ; an excellent delegation from the Tasmanian Commandery lead by Commander Edward Gauden KGSJ; a large number of Melbourne based members and partners; representatives from the Gippsland/Peninsula Group lead by Chevalier Alex Anderson KSJ; and a large contingent from the South Australian Priory lead by HE Chevalier Brenton Mollison RFD ED JP CJSJ. Many guest and friends were also in attendance.

Geelong hosted a meeting of the Grand Priory Council on 26 February - grateful thanks to Chevalier Geoff Neilson AM GCSJ for facilitating the meeting venue at Crowe Horwath.

The Priory extends its genuine thanks to all, who over many weeks and months planned and/or participated in the Investiture, or who played a supporting role on the day including Sr Anne Lourey (Pastoral Assistant) and Father Kevin Dillon AM. (St Mary’s Parish).

Congratulations also to newly appointed members of the Executive Committee of the Tasmanian Commandery: Chevaliers Barry Hirt OAM KSJ Secretary; Neil Hirt KSJ Treasurer; and fellow Executive Committee members Com. Graham so valued his membership he nominated both son Paul and son-in-law Andrew to also be Knights in the Priory in acknowledgement of the community work they had been involved in. Graham and the family were noticeably very regular attenders at Priory functions.

One particular initiative Graham introduced was the Family Open Day held at Dame Elizabeth Murdoch’s Cruden Farm in Langwarrin. These days were held in conjunction with the Mental Health Foundation, Victoria, almost annually for 10 years and Graham always chaired the joint Association Organizing Committee meetings. These events were great fundraisers for our respective charities. Graham’s graciousness of character and natural kindness were expressed in his personal concern and support for the wellbeing of his fellow Knights and Dames, and their families, in many ways over the past 20 years. Knights and Dames of the Order, together with family, friends and others will miss Graham immensely but we will all fondly remember him. [Truncated Tribute by Grand Prior Peter Wiltshire to the Memorial Service—Celebration of Graham’s Life on 20 January 2016]

Graham was recognised and awarded an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) on 26 January 1989 “In recognition of service to medicine, particularly in the field of psychiatry.”

My thanks to Chevalier Russell Jones KJSJ Vice Chancellor - Victorian Priory, for providing the following text of a Citation on the basis of Graham’s long and selfless service to the RANZCP, the profession of psychiatry and the community. Professor Graham Burrows was commended as a most worthy and meritorious recipient of the College Medal of Honour on the occasion of the College Ceremony in Auckland, 3 May 2010.

”Professor Burrows has a richly-deserved international reputation in diverse research areas including the mood and anxiety disorders, chronic pain and psychosomatics, and hypnosis, and he has been central to the establishment of modern psychopharmacology in Australia. Professor Burrows has been a prolific contributor to the psychiatric literature in Australia and overseas, and has further contributed to the dissemination of knowledge in the psychiatric community through his organisation of many conferences, congresses and scientific meetings – including most recently the 2008 RANZCP Congress in Melbourne.

Outside of the College, his professional contributions have been extensive: he has been involved in numerous advisory boards at state, national and international levels, and he has played active roles in many organisations including The World Federation for Mental Health, The Australasian Society for Psychiatric Research, AMA Victoria, The Collegium Internationale Neuro-Psychopharmacologicum, The Australian and International Societies of Hypnosis, and The Royal Society of Victoria. Professor Burrows has also provided distinguished service as the Foundation Professor of Psychiatry at the Austin Hospital, and as Clinical Director of the Mental Health Clinical Service Unit at Austin Health. Professor Burrows has been an energetic campaigner for the welfare of consumers and has a long history of involvement in advocacy, leadership and active participation in voluntary mental health organisations, including most notably The Mental Health Foundation of Australia and The Mental Health Foundation of Victoria.”

A gentle and exceptionally interesting man who was much loved by his family & friends.

Ken passed away on 9 January 2016 aged 93 years.

Victorian Priory members and families were shocked by the tragic and accidental death of Chevalier Professor Graham Burrows AO CJSJ on January 10, 2016. Graham was the loved husband of Barbara, a partner, friend and support for 48 years. He was the devoted father of Chev. Paul & Alison, Kerryn & Chev. Andrew. Graham was a doting Grandfather of Emma, Sophie, Amber and Tristan. He had many close friendships within the OSJ including the Jones and Boyles families.

Graham was invested into the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, Knights Hospitaller Australasia in 1996. He was proud to be a Knight of the Order and over the years was promoted for his work, within the Order and in the community, to the level of Knight Commander of Justice. He was a member of the Victorian Priory Council and held the position of the Priory’s Herald, which made him responsible for overseeing protocol and heraldry within the Priory. His advice was greatly valued and he was much respected within the Order. Chevalier Max Chester OAM KJSJ recalls that some 20 years ago, “it was my privilege to accompany our former late Prior, Ian Vassie AM, to the Austin Hospital, to invite Professor Graham Burrows AO to become a Member of the OSJ.

THE HERALD EDITION 27 : MARCH 2016 PAGE 9 Pro Fide Pro Utilitate Hominum 1048 AD - For Faith For Service to Humanity

The hospice of St John, the beginnings of our Order, from the first, adopted a policy of receiving all needy patients, irrespective of religion. We can only admire the dedication, resourcefulness, and love of those who dedicated themselves to the Hospitaller tradition, who treated the poor, the sick and later those grievously injured in battle, with rudimentary supplies and medicines. Through the ensuing almost one thousand years, the Order has been attacked, ostracized, subjected to the dictates of empires and occasionally strayed from the main path.

Why is the Order the oldest continuing Order of Chivalry? Not by virtue of pomp and circumstance, but because men and women of good will, have been prepared, at a cost to themselves, to abide by the twin virtues of the Order – for faith and for service to humanity.

Firstly from Gerard of Amalfi - that our work is undertaken as a service to humanity.

And from a Nazarene carpenter, who stated, “Whenever you do this for these the least of my brothers and sisters, you do it for me”, which encapsulates the principal reason for us being here today. Our Order in recent years in Geelong has supported Time for Youth’s – Café subsidy programme, Barwon Sports Academy’s disabled youth support, a PNG teenager to receive treatment for a brain tumour in Australia, and UnitingCare Geelong.

The passing of the years has done little to reduce the number of poor or those on the edge or those persecuted in various ways. There is still much to be done; we see news of the number fleeing countries and seeking refuge, food and help elsewhere to name just one. The obligation falls on those who are prepared to wear the White Cross. Are you prepared to help the homeless man or just the dog?

Knights, Dames and guests, I ask you, if you are able, to be upstanding as we offer a toast to The Order of St John of Jerusalem

(Knights Hospitaller).

ORDER OF ST JOHN OF JERUSALEM KNIGHTS HOSPITALLER—AUSTRALASIA

TOAST TO THE ORDER & RECOGNITIONS

The Toast to the Order presented by Chevalier Wayne Myers OAM KSJ (left)

Your Excellencies, Knights and Dames, Partners, and Friends of the Order of St John. My Lenten reading for Wednesday of last week focussed on the text from Matthew 9: 38 – “Therefore, plead with the Lord of the harvest to send out workers for his harvest”; an interesting text that links with doing good works.

The commentary provided by Sue Mink used a story of a person standing on a street corner talking to a homeless man when a stray dog ran out into the street. Immediately, cars stopped and people coaxed the dog to safety, calming it, and then putting it in a car to bring it out of danger. Watching all this, the homeless man commented, “I guess I would get more help if I were a dog.”

Brother Gerard of Amalfi was the sort of person who would be helping the homeless man. In 1048 Brother Gerard answered the call and inaugurated a Hospice in Jerusalem dedicated to St John, served by the Nursing Brothers and Sisters who wore the White Cross of Amalfi. The great pilgrimages of medieval times to Jerusalem, Rome, and other places, held the promise of absolution or merit, for those who could afford to travel. But we, who would follow the Hospitaller tradition, must remember that the majority of those who set out from Amalfi, did not return, but succumbed to the diseases of those for whom they cared.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Above: The Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC, Her Excellency Lady Lynn Cosgrove, Dame Joy Leggo DGSJ. CEO MACS

He thanked the MACS staff “for caring, really caring.” , and he thanked MACS residents “who’ve come from around the world, for making MACS community what it is.” Then, together with Lady Cosgrove, the Governor-General unveiled the commemorative plaque and the MACS family burst into applause. Joy Leggo DGSJ, MACS CEO took her turn at the microphone and was greeted with a huge roar of appreciation. She thanked the many people, individuals and organisations that had contributed to the development project. “A day like today does not happen without years of planning, funding submissions, teamwork and checking to make sure that we are always fulfilling our vision and mission.”

MACS oldest resident, 105-year-old Franciska, stood to present Lady Cosgrove with a tussie-mussie created with flowers and fragrant herbs lovingly grown in MACS’ garden. Predictably, the crowd had saved their loudest applause for Franciska.

The OSJ has had strong connections with MACS from the ground up. Former and inaugural Board Members of MACS include Chevalier Dr. Stretch Kontelj OAM KSJ and Dame Barbara Abley AM DJSJ. Chevalier Frank Costa AO KJSJ has also been a generous contributor to the organisation’s infrastructure since its inception.

When departing, the Governor General acknowledged Joy as “Dame Joy” - fully aware that she was a member of the Order of St John of Jerusalem Knights Hospitaller Australasia.

Well done CEO Dame Joy Leggo DGSJ, and MACS Chair - Dame Gael Perry DGSJ who are both members of the Geelong Commandery and the Commandery Executive . MACS is located in Weddell Road, North Geelong.

At the invitation of the Board and Residents of the Multicultural Aged Care Services Geelong, the Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove and Lady Cosgrove officially opened the newest facilities: Annie O’Malley House and Piazza at this large and well respected community.

The Piazza was “sun-kissed and dressed to impress” in shady marquees and row-upon-row of white chairs. Suited security men buzzed the perimeter as the space began to fill.

A trickle at first, then a stream. Wheelchairs and walkers rolled in, residents and home care consumers filed in, family and friends found their seats, VIPs and invited guests were ushered into place, volunteers and MACS staff merged. Sir Peter Cosgrove spoke about his previous role as Chairman of Leading Age Services Australia and gaining “a crash course in how Australians look after that national treasure of ours: people, and especially older people.” He acknowledged the generosity of Frank and Shirley Costa and the memory of Shirley’s mother, Annie O’Malley.

DID YOU KNOW?

The formation of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem (Knights Hospitaller) in Australia began in 1969, however other than

Queensland was rather dormant until the intervention of two well-known Knights of Saint John associated with this city, Sir Hubert Opperman and James McGregor Dowset, who invited a number of Geelong identities to be invested into the Order.

This occurred in 1980 at St Thomas Aquinas Church in St Lucia Brisbane. Among those invested on that occasion was

Major Ian Barnes.

That same year the Priory of Victoria was inaugurated, the first meeting of which was held in the Royal Commonwealth

Society Premises in La Trobe Terrace. Ian attended that meeting when the Priory of Victoria was established on 19 February 1980 with H.E. Bailiff the Honourable Sir Hubert Opperman CBE as the Prior.

The Commandery of Ballarat was raised on 24 June 1983 with Chevalier Colonel Edward Rigby as its Commander

On the 17th February 1984 a Warrant was issued to establish a Commandery of the Order of Saint John in Geelong.

Chevalier Milton Williams was the first Commander and Ian was an inaugural member of both the Victorian Priory and Geelong Commandery. The only enduring foundation member of both those bodies.

In 2010 a decision was made by the Grand Priory of Australasia to associate our Australian Order with the Order of Saint

John in Malta. In a sense back to our roots. The Sovereign Council in Malta decreed to recognise the length of service of Knights and Dames within the Australian Order and over time has issued diplomas recognising the position or rank held by our members.

Dedication of the International Peace Garden Ringwood Lake Park

Dame Joan Young DSJ in opening this Peace Garden said, “ In 1998 I was sitting with Lord Yehudi Menuhin, as we had done many times throughout the years, discussing matters of mutual interest and concern. Apart from our love of music, we shared a parallel, passionate interest - the promotion of International Peace.

On that occasion we jointly proposed an ideal - to see a Tree or Garden of Peace dedicated in every city of the world. This Garden (Ringwood Lake Park), which is a project of the Rotary Club of Ringwood, is an expression of that ideal. International Peace is the noblest state of existence to which humanity can aspire. Peace does not recognise barriers based on race, culture, economic or social status, philosophic or religious beliefs, yet it is constantly being challenged by the implementation of uncompromising dedication and commitment to both artificial and substantial impediments created by these. Peace represents freedom for every soul who draws breath. The world-wide cultural, religious, political and social diversity which is a feature of our contemporary society considerably broadens the parameters of challenge and service which must be engaged with every step which is taken towards international peace.

We grieve the tragedies of war, slavery, poverty, hunger and homelessness, and the deprivation of freedom and education. Never before has there been a more urgent need of assistance throughout the world than there is today.” The Plaque states: “This Garden is a symbol of International Peace. May all who pass by this place pause and meditate on peace—the ultimate ideal of the human state and reflect on the unity of all men, women and children as One People.” The Rotary Peace Garden is a joint project funded by the Australian Government ANZAC Centenary Grants Program and the Rotary Club of Ringwood Inc.
