Key Nutrient Carbon and its impact on growth

All life forms  – Plants, Animals, and Humans  – are CARBON based. Plants get the carbon in form of Carbon Dioxide (CO2),

which is the most important and at the same time the most neglected plant nutrient. In thousands of experiments it has

been shown that increased CO2 available to the plants increases the growth of nearly all plants.

In short, the more CO2

the plants can take up - the better and healthier they grow!

Trees growing under same conditions but different CO2 concentrations:

Another example of the benefits of high CO2 concentrationas described above is shown in this picture. The difference

in developing plant and roots of a common house plant

(Devil's Ivy or Golden Pathos) is clearly demonstrated at a

CO2 concentration of 196ppm to 752ppm on the right side.

The atmosphere's current CO2

concentration is between 350  – 380ppm only!

Carbon can be thought of as the basic building block.

For optimal photosynthesis the plants require 1000ppm CO2.

From the atmosphere they are short of 600-650ppm.

All other nutrients or fertilizers are secondary and of no use, unless sufficient

CO2 is plant available. Therefore, Carbon is also called the elixir of life!

Wittwer, S.H. 1992. Rising Carbon Dioxide is great for plants.Policy Review , Fall 1992

“One of the best-kept secrets in the global warming debate is that the plant life

of Planet Earth would benefit greatly from a higher level of carbon dioxide (CO2)

in the atmosphere. You read that correctly.

Flowers, trees, and food crops love carbon dioxide,

and the more they get of it, the more they love it.

Carbon dioxide is the basic raw material that plants use in photosynthesis to

convert solar energy into food, fiber, and other forms of biomass. Voluminous

scientific evidence shows that if CO2 were to rise above its current ambient

level of 360 parts per million, most plants would grow faster and larger because

of more efficient photosynthesis and a reduction in water loss. There would also

be many other benefits for plants, among them greater resistance to temperature

extremes and other forms of stress, better growth at low light intensities,

improved root/top ratios, less injury from air pollutants, and more nutrients

in the soil as a result of more extensive nitrogen fixation.”

The role of Calcium in the growth of plants.

The second very important nutrient provided by HERBAGREEN® is

Calcium

Calcium fertilization of many crops is frequently confused with lime or gypsum soil amendments. Many

believe application of these minerals to soils sufficiently supplies the calcium requirement of crops. These minerals improve the pH-value of the soil but are not immediately available as the required plant

nutrient.

Calcium in soluble form is a multifunctional nutrient in the physiology of crop plants. Cell wall strength

and thickness are increased by calcium resulting in a strong structural rigidity. With rapid plant growth,

the structural integrity of stems that hold blossoms and fruits, as well as the quality of fruit produced, is

strongly related to calcium availability.

Classical visual symptoms of calcium deficiency include death of growing points, prematureshedding of blossoms and buds and weakened stems.

Enhanced cell wall structural integrity supplied by calcium is also important for plant health. Many fungi

and bacteria invade and infect plant tissue by producing enzymes that dissolve the middle lamella (the

middle lamella is a pectin layer which cements the cell walls of two adjoining cells together ).

Increasing tissue calcium content reduces the enzyme activity for example of Erwinia bacteria which

infect many vegetable and cause storage rot in potato tubers. Beans with a low calcium content

(1.6%) where completely destroyed by these bacteria within 6 days. Plants with 3.4% calcium were

healthy and showed no symptoms of infection.

Fungal infections of plants are also substantially reduced by increased calcium uptake. As example

Fusar ium oxyspo rum , the fungal pathogen causing wilt and crown rot in tomato plants and is

attacking also banana plants. Research indicates that plants receiving low rates of calcium were

severely infected, compared to healthy plants receiving higher calcium rates.

1st testing of HERBAGREEN ® in Rubber Trees

• Location: Lamae in Chumphon Province• Test side suffers from unproductive rubber

trees

• 5 trees were selected for HERBAGREEN ®

testing

• First spraying: 16th May 2011

• The first 2 trees were in bad condition, loosing

leafs and trees were in progress of dying off.

• The others suffer from poor skin quality,

fungal infection and stem damage from

rubber tapping

• one spray application to stem and soil was

done this day

• Re-visiting test side after 3 weeks on 30th MayFirst visit on 16 May 2011

Spray application 16th May 2011

• spraying stem: from bottom up to a

height of 3-4 meters above ground• target: - stimulate skin for good flow of

latex

• support tree in healing process of skin

damage / infections and fungal diseases

• spraying surrounding soil: up to 1,5

meter from stem

• target: stimulate soil surface with

HERBAGREEN ®

•improve pH value of soil

• prepare to flush Nano Minerals into

deeper soil structure by next rain

• stimulate better development of soil

micro organisms and nutrient up takecapability of rubber tree roots

Observation after 2 weeks: • 4 of 5 trees were tapped for rubber milk

• plantation owner commented on improved “soft”

skin quality• all tapped trees produced latex, even the first two

trees which were dying off!

• this two trees with almost no leafs left should not

been tapped, but anyhow showed great recovery by

producing this new rubber flow.

30th May 2011

Tree condition: • by spraying only soil and stem, all trees showed significant

recovery

• all trees showed excessive new branching and leaf development

• HERBAGREEN  ® rubber trees are easily recognized by the light

green new leafs, rest of plantation had the usual dark green

appearance

• the two dying trees on the right hand side sprouted with a blast of

new life

Page 22: Herbagreen Slide Show040213

Significant recovery ! • first tree: when visiting plantation on 16th May, this tree had

already almost completely dyed off

• after spraying HERBAGREEN  ® on stem and soil, new leaf

branches sprouted out all over the tree

• in other parts of this plantation many trees in this condition

had already been chopped.

• all visitors were impressed by this recovery!

• we expect a full recovery of this tree by mid of June

Page 23: Herbagreen Slide Show040213

All-round improvement • spraying the soil with HERBAGREEN  ® , the result was visible

by an improved micro organism environment.

• large numbers of earth worms were back and helped to loosen

up the soil structure around the tree and allowed a better oxygen

supply to the hair roots.

• the untreated trees were still with a hard and compacted soil

structure with no worms active there

• good soil environment may have helped also to recover these

damaged rubber trees.

Improved skin healing • effect of spraying HERBAGREEN  ® on skin:

•softer skin, clear advantage for rubber tapping

• bacterial and fungal infections were eliminated in

very short time

• old skin parts ready to be shed faster and easier

than in non treated trees

• fast development of healthy new skin layers

monitoring

progress in

rubber test

This test side has been our first site where a farmer has treated a bigger number of his rubber trees with HERBAGREEN  ® . He identified prior to spraying his unproductive trees which did

not produce any latex for years. He planned to chop down these trees and sell them to the

wood processing factory. Already after 2 sprayings we observed the recovery of dry bark trees

resulting in full rubber flow. The owner first did not believe this possibility but accepted the

success after all dry rubber trees produced a very healthy rubber flow.

First rubber tapping of dry rubber trees

The unimaginable happens. An unproductive rubber tree is tapped by its owner, not believing

rubber ever will flow again after years of dryness. Spraying only twice all his dry trees recovered

to full flow of latex!

Rubber flow:

• rubber tree with dry skin, sprayed 3 times with

HERBAGREEN  ® produced more Latex flow than regular productive trees!

• With only1 tapping, rubber cup was almost filled up!

Recovery of bad conditioned bark

•This tree suffers

from typical damageof over fertilization.

The chemical stress

breaks bark apart

hardening rest of it.

•after 1x spraying of

HERBAGREEN  ®,bark softened and

thick old parts could

be removed easily.

• other control trees

in farm remained

with hard bark and

fungal nests below

bark.

Recovered dead skin down to the roots

• this tree with dry skin for over 5 years, had been sprayed

2 times with HERBAGREEN  ®

• to analyze, rubber expert observed rubber flow from high stem, down to low part and further to roots and even hair roots.

• result: rubber flow was in all parts present, which indicated total

recovery of this tree!

Conclusion: • Unproductive (‘dry’) Rubber trees in the Rayong Region,

North Eastern and in Southern Provinces have recovered100% after application of HERBAGREEN ® !

• Even the worst cases such as plantations damaged by

chemical fertilization which had been “ dead” for 10 yearsor plantations with dry bark up to 80% recovered after only2-3 sprayings (only Variety No. 24 needed a few moreapplications to recover).

• After application of HERBAGREEN ® tapping was started andall trees regained productivity. Depending on the formercondition trees showed an output increase of 25% up to230%.

Rubber: Our customers and their issues Prachinburi, Mr. Sombun: checked the product

quality of Herbagreen by testing 20 trees effected

with dead skin. 3 Herbagreen application on previous

dead/dry rubber trees, resulted in healthier trees, softbark which is better for tapping and good rubber flow.

He see Herbagreen of high Value for his investment.

Province: Rayong, Mrs. Waree: her

Situation: healthy looking rubber trees, but 100

trees don’t produce any rubber. Having testedmany products with no effect to recover her

plants, she gave 1 more trial to Herbagreen. Mrs.

Waree confirm that Herbagreen is working very

well in rubber and she recommend this now to

others.

Province: Kanchanaburi, Mrs. Srichan.

Problem: Fusarium fungal infection, effected this

regional rubber plantations. Typically are black fungal

dots on leafs and bark. In many cases dying trees are

the result. Herbagreen has been applied 4 time since -

with the result that Mrs. Srichans plantation is the only

that recovered from the fungal infestation very well. Her

trees recovered to an extend that she harvested latex

with excellent yield.

Banana: HERBAGREEN® makes the big difference The Situation: Mrs Panitha, plants Bananas in here plantation, which suffered from pest and disease. Usage of too

much chemicals and fertilizers didn’t deliver improvements to here farm. The result was a very low yield and very few

A-grade Bananas which would gain higher price for export. Her husband already asked to destroy the

bananas and change over to other type of crops. With her request to test 1 more product, he feared to loose again

money on a product that does not work. After spraying Herbagreen , they not only discovered that the Bananas wererecovering to better condition, but they also realized that Herbagreen is a 100% natural product since they overused

initial their formulation. No damage what so ever were occurring to the plants. With Herbagreen they see many strong

points: no fungi on flower, getting longer branches with more fruit, very clean skin on Bananas, more banana per

branch and growing very nicely. Herbagreen is very easy to work with and leads to over 90% export qualityBananas!

Mrs Panitha and Husband

Mrs Panitha’s export quality Banana. Clean skin without any damages is the key . A 5x higher sales price is her reward.

Herbagreen and how to apply: Mrs Panitha starts spraying once the Banana tree is ready for blossoming. They apply

every 4 days Herbagreen in a 0.4% solution straight to the flower and stem only. This spraying is going on until the Banana

branch is ripe to cut off the top flower. Once the Banana is covered with the Plastic bag they stop the application.  – Thistechnique has been used by them and generates high quality Bananas in the right size for export.

Mrs. Panitha was able to

increase her income with

Herbagreen from 100,000

Thb/year to earn thesame amount within 3month!

First spraying before flower appear.  Spray every 4 days to flower and stem   Easy and fast to apply  Up to double fruit development

Herbagreen in Banana contributes to a significant improvement in Quality and yield. Below table shows

the high increase of A-grade yield, which generates a 5x higher sales price since only A-grade Bananas

are used for Export. Also more level of Bananas are developed throughout the blossoming period,

resulting in almost doubling of Bananas. Our Herbagreen user has roughly increased his revenue 10times!  Mrs. Panitha, in Chanthaburi, October 2012

Citrus Canker : Citrus Canker is a bacterial infection of stem, leafs and fruits. Canker lowers significantly the vitality of

Citrus/Lime trees. As a result falling of leafs and fruits affects plantations. The limes also appear uglyand unsellable. Canker is a very persistent bacterium which is usually very difficult to eradicate.

Rice Blast Disease , a fungal infection, is the most important disease attacking rice all over the world.

It destroys yearly rice, that could feed up to 60 million people. Within a very short time spores aremultiplied and cover vast areas and contribute to very high crop losses.

Brown Plant Hopper (BPH) attacking rice fields

In Thailand every year about 100,000ha

rice fields are destroyed by the BPH. Even

repeated spraying of pesticides turned out

to be useless against this pest.

Spraying attacked rice fields withHERBAGREEN® resulted in a

fast disappearance of the BPH.

The insects died, as seen in the

right picture, or tried to escape.

Bacterial Damage :Bacterial Damage in plantations and crops are having various reasons: The ultimate cause is definitely the over use of

chemicals applied to plants and soil. The Stress generated to plants weakens their immune system and allow hazardous

pathogens easily to damage plants. In many cases whole plantations are damaged and sometimes need to be destroyed.

By the simple application of Herbagreen these affected plants are recovering from chemical and bacterial damages and are

revitalised when Herbagreen is used in follow up treatment. The natural composition and the activation of  Herbagreen are

the healing natural balance the plants have been missing.

Farmers use chemical fertilizers and synthetic pesticides to increase

crop yield and kill harmful insects. In Thailand it has been shown that

using harmful chemicals may accomplish neither.

According to a recent article published by

Science & Development Network,

Thai farmers made an outbreak of harmful insects worse by

using too many chemical pesticides. An outbreak of BPH has

destroyed about 4% of the total paddy fields in Thailand. It

appears that the over usage of chemical fertilizers hadincreased the BPH fertility.

The pesticides applied, such as Pyrethroids, appear to have no

effect on the BPH but instead kill spiders, the natural enemies

of the BPH.

The BPH suck the plant sap of the leaves causing yellowing of

the plants resulting finally in a complete drying of the plants.Treated with HERBAGREEN® plants develop so strong leaves

that the BPH cannot penetrate and suck the sap. Additionally the

sap has a higher BRIX which is dangerous for the BPH.

Carbon Dioxide

in the growth of plants.

Hardy & Havelka, 1975

a classic study showed that a tripling of atmospheric CO2 results in a six-fold increase

in biological nitrogen fixation by Rhizobial

Bacteria (from 75 to 425kg per hectare)in nodules attached to the roots of soybean.

Page 73: Herbagreen Slide Show040213

Imai & Murata.

Effect of Carbon Dioxide on Growth and Dry Matter Production of Crop Plants. Japan.Journ.Crop Sci., 1978

Quote: “After 10 days of treatment with nitrogen at 350ppm and 1000ppm CO2

the dry weight (DW) of rice plants was as follows:

350ppm CO2, 30 mg nitrogen per plant DW = 835 mg per plant

350ppm CO2, 120 mg nitrogen per plant DW = 1,081 mg per plant

1000ppm CO2, 30 mg nitrogen per plant DW = 1,199 mg per plant1000ppm CO2, 120 mg nitrogen per plant DW = 1,862 mg per plant

This demonstrates that at higher levels of atmospheric CO2,

food crops have considerably lower requirements for fixed nitrogen

for the same growth; alternatively, for the same nitrogen treatment

they achieve considerably enhanced growth.

Higher levels of atmospheric CO2 lead to greater

biological nitrogen fixation from the atmosphere,

so less is required to be added as fertilizer.”

Physiological plant ecology:

eco-physiology and stress physiology of functional groups.Springer , 2003

Quote:

“According to over 3000 scientific publications on the biology

of CO2 effects, a broad spectrum of growth responses to CO2

enrichment exists. Since elevated CO2 often reduces the plants’

demands for other resources, CO2 effects on growth do not simplyfollow Liebig’s law of the minimum.

Plants exposed to elevated CO2 need less enzymes (and thus lower

quantities of leaf proteins and nitrogen), lose less water (can cope

with less soil moisture and often operate at smaller stomata openings)

and need less light (because of a shift in the light compensation point

for photosynthesis) to reach the equivalent, or even higher photosynthetic

rates than plants growing under control conditions with “normal” CO2

concentrations.”

Rising Carbon dioxide Is Great for Plants

“The Water Conservation Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Agriculture

has compared the growth of orange trees under the current atmospheric CO2

concentration of 360 ppm, and a concentration of 650 ppm. The trees at the

elevated levels have accumulated 2.8 times more biomass in five years, and in

their first two years of production produced 10 times more oranges.”

“Hartwell Allen, a plant scientist with the

U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service

in Gainesville, Florida, has estimated that soybean yields have

increased by 13 percent because of a rise in global

carbon dioxide concentration.”
