IT’S GOODBYE TO PAT FROM HER ADMIRING 7UPSANOVERS GROUP

After more years than she would care to admit, Pat Yeates is handing over the reins of her HW 7upsnovers group prior to her moving house in the near future. Sunday mornings at Wimbledon Park won’t be the same without the presence of Pat working quietly and efficiently in the background as some 100 plus youngsters with the assistance of a team of coaches enjoy the morning on the track…..no matter what the weather! Many of these youngsters have gone on to be valuable team members for the club. For many years Pat carried out her duties while being the General Secretary of HW and even a recent hip replacement operation meant hardly a blip in the running of her group. It was a rare Sunday morning that witnessed the absence of Pat in overseeing her beloved youngsters.

PARENT’S MEETINGS HELD BY RICHARD WESTON – NEXT SUNDAY!

From Sunday 1st November and on the first Sunday of each month in December (6

th) and

February (7th

) I shall be holding a parents’ meeting for 7Upsandovers in the club house

during coaching, lasting around 45 minutes from 10.00am. I discussed this with Pat and she

is sure it will take some of the pressure off the person on the desk as well as providing the

parents who have little or no knowledge of our sport or their club with some insight. The

talks will explain what the club is all about, the rationale behind the coaching we give to the

7Upsandovers and how we see the youngsters progressing as they get older. Along the way

we shall cover funding, volunteering, stadium maintenance and suchlike.

Note: the format of the above meeting will follow the route of the Tuesday evening meetings

previously held by Richard. Parents of the older young athletes who train on Tuesday and

Thursday evenings would be most welcome to attend.

BACK TO BASICS – AN OLD SCHOOL INTER-CLUB RACE

Club members and friends of the club are invited and encouraged to take part in the 2015

Hercules Wimbledon Club Cross Country Race which will be taking place on Wimbledon

Common on Saturday 5th December. The race will start at 11 o’clock to avoid clashes with

other events taking place on the Common.

All ages, both male and female, will start together with young athletes (U13, U15, U17)

running one lap of two and a half miles, whilst seniors and veterans complete a second lap to

take them up to five miles. The course is the traditional route, starting and finishing by the

Thatched Cottage. (Please find a map of the course attached)

Please report to the start area from 10:15 onwards to collect your number from the race

organisers, Robert Tuer and Eileen Brandley. There is no entry fee.

This year some other clubs from the East Surrey area have been invited to take part which

promises to boost numbers, whilst retaining the friendly atmosphere which makes this race

suitable for all, regardless of experience or ability.

First-claim male and female members compete for the Borough News Trophy with the first

across the line crowned club XC champions. Last year's winners were Jon Cornish and Lisa

Thomas and we've heard both intend to defend their titles!

We hope to see you on Saturday!

Robert Tuer & Eileen Brandley

HW Cross Country Secretaries

Note: This is Rob and Eileen’s first experience of hosting a home cross country race

following them taking on the role of Cross Country Secretary from Pete Mulholland so please

give them your support! This could either be by taking part in the race itself, or volunteering

your services to be a marshall, help mark out the course or being a race official. If you would

like to help please email [email protected] or [email protected]

SIX HW PARKRUN WINS – IS THIS A RECORD?

A blank weekend for HW last Saturday and Sunday as far as team events went but some 40

members took part in parkrun events – which are ideal if the club don’t require their services

as team members.

In these parkruns, club members tasted victory on what must be a record five occasions so

step forward Ben Toomer (Copenhagen), Rob Tuer (Slough), Alex Robinson (Wimbledon),

Fran Clarke (Kingston) and Claire Grima (Wimbledon).

Just for good measure, young Ellen Weir was clear a winner in the Wimbledon Park Junior

parkrun on the Sunday!

STUDENTS ON THE RUN

Page 3: HERCULES WIMBLEDON AC NEWS & RESULTS, w/c November

An excellent development this winter has been the enthusiastic presence of Roehampton

University students in both competition and at training sessions and no less than eight of

them took part in the London Universities & Colleges Indoor Championships at Lee Valley.

Juan Hernandez also took along some of his charges who competed as guests (see results)

Roehampton all:- Hal, Kirsty, Alex, Christine,.Torbita, Christine, Patricia, and Aaron

WIMBLEDON PARK TRACK CLOSURE DURING CHRISTMAS

Merton Council has advised that over the Christmas holiday period the track will be closed

from December 24 and will re-open on January 2. This of course means that as far as training

goes the final HW sessions will be Tuesday, December 22 with the first sessions in the New

Year being on Tuesday, January 5.

NEWS OF AN EVENT HOSTED BY OUR FRIENDS FROM THAMES

Our Second Sunday 5 Series - next race 13 December. We've launched a regular, low key,

five mile race on Wimbledon Common every second Sunday of every month at 9.30am from

our clubhouse. It's a good, traditional, run which gives some fast paced running or just to add

a bit of spice as part of those pre-marathon long runs. Entry's just £3 and that pays for the

free tea and cake afterwards. Our next run is on 13 December and has a festive theme to

it. 2016 will see runs every Second Sunday - as the name suggests! Full details at

www.secondsunday5.com

SURREY ATHLETICS – REQUEST FOR SOCIAL MEDIA SUPPORT This comes from the Surrey County AA online-data team:

“Dear athletics colleague,

You may have noticed wonderful things happening in the County with championship online

entries and in the Surrey League with declarations and results. Andy Robinson at Reportlab

is behind all this and has sent the following request:

The Surrey League site is being funded by an EU technology grant process to build better

technology for athletics. Our goal is to make it really easy to organise club races, and our

next review point is in late November. To keep the Eurocrats happy, it will help if people

support us on social media in the next week. And it will REALLY help if programmers, web

designers and "athletics geeks" from some of the league clubs volunteer to join in.

So please take a look at http://opentrack.run/, and if you think it's a good idea, share it on

Facebook, tweet about it, or post something on the forum.Hope you can help Andy!”

For the above event you will see a request for those attending to assist in the supply of food

or drink for the post-race buffet. Nothing too grand such as a roast hog mind you!

PHYSIO AT THE TRACK Do you as a member of HW have an injury that needs treatment? Speak to Hannah. You will

be able to get treatment at the track for a nominal fee of £5.

Hannah Fernando is a qualified and experienced physiotherapist and she will be providing

diagnosis and treatment every Tuesday from 7pm. The club is subsidising these sessions to

provide this valuable service so make the most of the opportunity. Hannah will only be able

to see 2 or 3 people per session so make sure you contact her in advance to book your slot.

Please email Hannah at [email protected] or text 07894 227947 so she can

give you a time slot in advance.

st, 2015

has to be administered by the club on your behalf. Please see the EA registration section on

http://www.herculeswimbledonac.org.uk/Membership-&-Renewals.html for how to pay.

Extract from race website: The race starts and finishes at Denbies and takes in some of the

delights of our local area along the way. The first leg has you climbing the steps to the Box

Hill lookout point, then flat out down Burford Spur (weee!) and back to Denbies. Second leg

climbs up Crabtree Lane in Westhumble – one of those steep hills that go on and on for ages,

then just when you are ready to give up gets a bit steeper at the top. Why do they do

that? Then its round the back of Norbury Park, past the sawmill and back down the hill again

to the vineyard. The final leg is an out and back to the top of the hill behind Denbies – again,

pretty steep and never ending up to Ranmore Common, but a whiz to run down as you know

the finish is getting closer
