The Motor Traffic Act 1909 is the introduction of

all basic road rules such as: • Registration

• Speed limits

• Requirement for lights, brakes, and a bells to be fitted

• Restriction of ‘unsuitable’ vehicles

• Uniquely numbered plates on all vehicles

• Uniform road signage

witnesses came forward:

• Railway labourer Francis Joseph Gilbert could identify Twiss as having an idea that the

payroll could be robbed. Twiss had said “it would be very easy for anyone to get the money”.

• Molly Butler (Flanagan’s Hotel barmaid) could identify the gang as associates of each other.

• John William Eden could identify Samuel Freeman in the Moline on the day of the robbery

In Melbourne associate Sam Faulkiner received letters instructing him to hold

two bags until Ryan arrived. Ryan sent his share of the loot in those bags. The

bags travelled on the 15th June 1914.

29th June 1914 Ryan disguised himself and boarded a train to Melbourne. In a

later police statement, he proudly described how he managed to get on the

train when the station was ‘loaded’ with police.

come to Sydney to find buyers for his invention. Ryan stated he had nothing to do
