Here for good. For more than twenty years the MAA has served as a valuable link between generous alumni and friends and the next generation of Marlington graduates. More than donors or philanthropists, the growing pool of individuals who annually support the MAA are making purposeful and critical investments in the future. We are grateful for your continued support and strive to make you proud of your school, the honorees we select and the work of the MAA. Since our first $500 awards in 1989 to the twenty awards totaling $45,000 in 2012, the Marlington Alumni Association strives to make a difference. Just like the Marlington School district, we’ve grown and changed. But we remain, as always, here for good. For good of the next generations, for good of you, our donors, and for good of the global community we now inhabit, we’re here. Donors are the heart of the MAA. Our goal is to help you tailor your giving to match your philanthropic dreams and to make donating as easy as possible. I invite you to become a patron at the level most appropriate for you and your family, and make your tax- deductible gift of $25, $50, $500, $1,000 or more using the enclosed envelope or online at www.marlingtonalumni.org. The Marlington Alumni Association held its annual meeting and scholarship awards banquet April 30, 2012 at The Hartville Kitchen and distributed awards totaling $45,000 to twenty Marlington seniors.

Depending on available resources, awards ranged from $500- $10,000 and will help students purchase books, pay tuition or fund specific course requirements. More than sixty students’ applications, transcripts and essays were evaluated by the MAA scholarship committee and carefully compared to each scholarship’s specific criteria. Scholarships were awarded based on varied combinations of academic accomplishments, personal interests, and need, and will assist students pursuingfurther education in agriculture, science, medicine, journalism, technical school, engineering arts, music and more.

The Marlington community lost a valued member May 3, 2012 when Thomas William Hazen went to his Heavenly home.

Many remember Mr. Hazen as a principal or guidance counselor. Others saw him in the neighborhood, at church or at community functions. No matter where, Tom Hazen was most recognized by his graciousness and his friendly smile.

Tom took genuine interest in other’s lives. He loved to hear updates and accomplishments and often remembered details and connections others forgot. He so enjoyed keeping up with alumni that for some years he contacted former students, charted their post-graduation accomplishments and kept up-to-date statistics. Always with an interest in improving the school, he shared the data with MHS staff and made suggestions for ways to improve MHS curriculum to better serve the students!

While Tom made an impact at Marlington, his life was full of achievements!

Did you know he:• wasbornFeb.4,1917andlivedfor 95years• GraduatedfromAllianceHighSchool• GraduatedfromMountUnionCollege• wasaFirstLieutenantintheUnited States Army• wasawardedtheBronzeStar• wasintheMedicalDetachment–Infantry• wasmarriedtoHelen(Pauli)Hazenfor 65 years • taughtatOsnaburgLocalHSand Marlboro HS• earnedhisMaster’sDegreeatKent State University• wasMarlingtonHighSchool’sfirstPrincipal and served for15 years• wasMHS’sFirstVocationalCounselor• retiredin1984• wasapublishedauthor

Though these few facts may highlight some of Mr. Hazen’s life, they can never reveal his best trait- he was a true, honorable and wise gentleman. Mr. Hazen always listened and processed before speaking. He was tactful, caring and compassionate. He loved his family and cherished his years at Marlington. May he always be remembered both in and out of the halls of Marlington High for he will be sorely missed.

Debbie Fox ( ‘87)I give because the MAA is a great organization that promotes pride in our schools and community. I appreciate getting the newsletter with updates on events and classmates.
