Sometimes parents see signs that make them wonder if their teen is struggling with emotional or mental health issues, but they don’t know where to find help. Young people often sense that a friend is in psychological distress, but they don’t know what to do about it. Even mental health providers need to know more about the mental health resources available in our community. Wouldn’t it be great if all this information were available on one website?

Soon, it will be. Information and resources will be available online through H·E·R·E for Youth, a robust website that allows people to search for mental health providers based on location, pay options, specialties and other filters. Imagine being able to take a depression screening test online, read up on specific brain disorders, print out a list of questions to ask a mental health provider, find information about different therapeutic treatments and discover other resources in the community.

With the help of other committed organizations and in collaboration with the North Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians, the Grant Halliburton Foundation is working to put this much-needed information at the fingertips of all who need it, including young people, families, mental health professionals, community agencies, juvenile justice, schools, and many others.

Thanks to a grant from The Meadows Foundation, along with gifts from Don Hodges, the Sahm Family Foundation, and the Tom and Edwina Johnson Family Foundation, the project broke digital ground this summer and is scheduled to launch in 2014 at www.hereforyouth.com. True to its name, H·E·R·E for Youth will be a vital resource for those who are seeking Help, Education, Resources and Encouragement for young people with mental disorders.

I AM H·E·R·E Coalition is the only coalition in North Texas focused solely on teen and young adult mental health. More than 50 organizations work together in this collaborative community effort.

Community forum brings focus to mental healthWhen The Dallas Morning News contacted Grant Halliburton Foundati on president Vanita Halliburton about parti cipati ng in a community forum on mental illness, Halliburton knew it would be an important opportunity to engage others in the cause.

“Erasing the Sti gma: Mental Illness and the Search for Soluti ons” was held earlier this year, a joint presentati on of Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, KERA, and The Dallas Morning News. Lee Cullum, host of the long-running KERA program CEO, moderated a panel discussion with four community leaders, including Halliburton. The hour-long televised interview covered a range of issues related to mental illness in our community, from the lack of adequate funding for public mental health to insurance hurdles to the ever-present sti gma that keeps people with treatable mental illnesses from seeking help.

State Representati ve Garnet Coleman shared his personal experience of living with bipolar disorder and how much easier life became once he decided to no longer keep his illness a secret.

“These are brain disorders,” said Dr. Preston Wiles, Medical Director of the UT Southwestern/Children’s Medical Auti sm Center. “They are illnesses, just like hypertension or diabetes, and there are medical, biological treatments for them.” Wiles discussed the importance of holisti c treatment incorporati ng both therapy and medicati on, as well as involving the family in a pati ent’s care.

Matt Roberts, President of Mental Health America of Greater Dallas, talked about the lack of state funding and voiced concern about our jails becoming the new mental health insti tuti ons. He noted that the justi ce system is the largest mental health provider in Greater Dallas, according to Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez.

Aft er sharing her personal story about losing her son Grant to suicide at the age of 19, Halliburton highlighted some signs of depression and off ered guidance on how and when to seek treatment.

“You can never go back and undo a tragedy, but you wish with all your heart that you could have a second chance,” Halliburton said. “We get a second chance every day in Texas because we lose a young person to suicide at the rate of one per day.

“Everyone who touches the life of a teenager has an opportunity to learn the signs and symptoms of depression. Parents, schools, coaches, mentors, peers—there are so many people surrounding a teen that have the potenti al to be watchful and to be guardians of that young person’s mental health.”

In the months since the forum, The Dallas Morning News has printed a series of op-ed arti cles writt en by the panelists and others in the community, conti nuing this important conversati on. These arti cles, as well as video clips from the forum, can be viewed at dallasnews.com/erasingthesti gma.

Off ering support for every member of the family“So you suspect, or know, that a loved one or friend is suff ering from a mental illness. Now what do you do? This is one of those moments in life where the best approach is to reach out for the support and wisdom of others: You will need company on the journey ahead.” Dr. Lloyd Sederer shared these words of advice in his new book, The Family Guide to Mental Health Care.

The Grant Halliburton Foundati on off ers peer support groups for every member of the family where there is a young person with mental health issues. The struggling teenagers—as well as their mothers, fathers, and siblings—who att end these support group meeti ngs form meaningful connecti ons with others who understand their situati ons. They also walk away refreshed and armed with tools and resources to help themselves or their loved ones struggling with mental illness. Anyone is welcome to att end the four groups, which are:

• Coff ee Days. This group for mothers meets on the fi rst day of each month (except holidays) at the Grant Halliburton Foundati on to share experiences, informati on and resources for teen and young adult mental health.

• Dad2Dad. Fathers meet one morning a month to share positi ve strategies for parenti ng a teen or young adult with mental health issues.

• Sibs. Young people who have siblings with mental health issues meet for support and encouragement at the Jewish Community Center.

• The Living Room. This group enables young people with mental health issues to connect with and encourage one another, meeti ng the fi rst Thursday evening of each month at UT Southwestern Medical Center.
