Dear Hereford Parents and Community,

We have had a great beginning of our school year. Our students are settled

into their classes. Student clubs and activities have begun. The grade levels

are organized in academic teams. Teachers of the interdisciplinary team, for

the most part, teach all of the same students. This allows teachers to support

students using a team approach. Teachers meet weekly to discuss student

supports and to plan team activities. This organization supports our School

Progress Goal of increasing students’ sense of belonging. #iBelong

Our students are very conscientious and hardworking. Their desire to meet

success in all that they do is noteworthy and impressive. It is important for the

adults in their lives to assist them in balancing their many commitments and free

time. Our students need time to disconnect from work, technology and

activities. Please encourage your child to take time each day to be mindful by:

coloring, taking a walk, doing yoga, listening to music, reflecting on all of the

positive things in their day, read or relax/breathe deeply. This is an important

thing for our students to do for their continued growth and wellbeing. Stress

management is a critical part of success. Students are at times very hard on

themselves when they make a mistake or do not do as well as they wanted to

on a task. Mistakes are important. We learn the most from our mistakes.

Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new. Albert Einstein

Content teams are focusing on incorporating responsive instruction strategies

into daily lessons. This focus on responsive instruction allows students to receive

instruction that takes the strengths and needs of each student into account.

Each student enters a lesson with unique experiences, different levels of

understanding/prerequisite skills, varied learning preferences and interests.

Teachers are using formative assessments, flexible small groups and multiple

approaches to ensure each student meets with individual success, supporting

our Literacy and Math School Progress Goals.

IMPORTANT IMFORMATION

• DISMISSAL/CHESTERFIELD

Our neighbors on Chesterfield have asked us to remind you that cars should not arrive at Hereford Middle

School area before 2:20 p.m. Arriving early cause lanes of Corbett to be blocked and traffic on

Chesterfield. Parents are reminded to not park on or pull on to private property or front lawns. Please help

us by obeying all traffic laws and being respectful of our neighbors’ property.

• AGRICULTURE SCIENCE CLEAN-UP DAY We will host an Agriculture Science Clean-Up Day on Saturday,

• HEREFORD HAS HEART

Hereford Has Heart is a special program that we have here at Hereford Middle School to recognize

students for exhibiting positive character traits such as, respect, responsibility, caring, trustworthiness,

citizenship, perseverance and positive friendship traits. We try to catch students “being good” such as

including others in activities, and helping others feel like they belong. We recognize them each month

by having their names shared on the announcements and posted in the Hereford Has Heart display

case. We also call each student down to the lobby to present them with a certificate and a small prize.

A description of how students showed good character is also read aloud in the lobby as well.

Last year we added a monthly drawing for a Chick-Fil-A gift card, which we are continuing this year.

All student’s names who are nominated are included in each monthly drawing. We will also be

holding a drawing at the end of the year for a larger prize with all names of students from the year.

FROM THE PTA

Greetings from the PTA. I wanted to give you a quick update from the PTA. First, I want to thank all those that have donated to the PTA. Thanks to your generosity, we have given over

$1,000 in support to our teachers. This Friday we are sponsoring the HMS Fall Dance, which is a wonderful and

fun event for our students. We are also working to further promote the #IBelong campaign which strives to

make meaningful connections with students and teachers –the goal is to make all students feel they are

welcomed and a part of the school.

Approximately 100 of the 1000 families have donated to the PTA this year. Our goal is 100%

participation. Donations are down 60% from previous years. This will obviously impact what we can sponsor for

our students and teachers. The good news is it is not too late to donate. A donation form is attached to this

newsletter. We hope you will support what you love.

Lastly, please visit and like our Facebook page – Hereford Middle School PTA – to keep up with school news and

events. If you have any thoughts or concerns, we would love to hear from you. Together we can do great things

for our students and our school.

FROM THE SCHOOL COUNSELING OFFICE

6th Grade News

The 2019-2019 school year is off to a great start! I have had so much fun getting to know our new 6th graders

and I am incredibly excited to watch them grow throughout middle school. During September and October,

I am visiting Language Arts classrooms to introduce myself and explain my role at HMS. So that I can build

my school counseling program around their needs, I also give the students a chance to share more about

themselves. It’s very important that students know that I am a part of their team and always ready and

willing to help.

This year we have an amazing classroom space for lunch groups. So far I have groups for students interested

in games, decorating, building and creating stop-motion animation films. If your son or daughter is interested

in joining us or starting a lunch group, have them stop by my office, message me through Schoology or send

me an email. Hereford Middle’s motto this year is #iBelong and I want all of our 6th graders to feel a sense of

belonging and being connected to others.

If a student would like to see me for any question or concern, the easiest way to do so is to stop by my office

in the morning after checking in with their homeroom teacher. If we need more time to talk, I will give him or

her a pass to come down at a later time. If there is an emergency, students can always ask a teacher for a

pass to come to my office. Students and parents can also make appointments by messaging me through

Schoology, sending an email or calling. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if there is anything I can do to

help. Here’s to a great first year of middle school!

7th Grade News

The 7th grade has many exciting things to look forward to! On November 9th we will be having a “Career

Day” for all 7th graders. During Career Day, students will hear presentations representing several different

careers. This activity is designed to expose our students to the world of work and encourage our 7th graders

to begin thinking about their own futures. If you are interested in volunteering for this event please contact

me.

The first week of October, Mrs. Richardson will be visiting classrooms to introduce students to the “6 year

plan”. Baltimore County Public Schools is committed to graduating globally competitive students with post-

graduation plans that align with their strengths, interests, and long-term career goals. In support of this

mission, our district is offering every student in Grades 7 through 12 the opportunity to develop a 6 Year Plan.

Each student receives classroom instruction and an individual meeting with their School Counselor to

develop the plan, which starts by identifying the student’s unique interests and aspirations in order to

determine a rigorous high school course schedule leading to on-time graduation, and goals for college and

careers. If you have any questions about his process please ask!

The School Counselors have a new classroom this year to host lunch groups and group counseling. The first

group I will be running will be on the topic of anxiety/stress management. The group will consist of up to 8

students, and we will meet once a week, rotating class periods so that students don’t miss each class period

more than once. The group will meet a total of 7 times. If you think your child would benefit from this group

counseling experience please contact me.

World Languages-

The Schoology folder for each World Language class will be divided according to four units per year.

Subsequently, each unit will be divided into two themes. Theme 1 will be taught in the first half of each

marking period and theme 2 will reflect the second half of the quarter. Resources for each theme will be

available during the unit. Please contact your child's teacher to request additional resources. Continue to

check Schoology as grades will be uploaded weekly.

We will post updates on the main course page or send weekly email to update parents on upcoming

assignments and topics.

Engineering by Design-

All three grades are beginning their first challenges. Assignments are posted on Schoology, and most of the

assignments are submitted via Schoology. Please check out what is happening in class, by following me on

Twitter! @SstoeStoe Mr. Stoe Math-

The Math department will have unit folders for each unit. Inside these folders teachers will have a "Practice

Homework key" where students and parents can find keys to the nightly homework assignments.

6

Science-

The HMS Science Department will be using Schoology throughout the year to communicate with both

students and parents on a regular basis. As part of this ongoing communication, Science teachers will be

organizing content by the Unit of Study, then by Learning Cycle/Topic. Some teachers will also use dated

folders on an “as needed” basis for content. Grades in Schoology will be updated approximately every two

weeks. Should you have any questions regarding your students’ Science class, please do not hesitate to

content the Science teacher either through Schoology, BCPS email, or phone.

ELA-

At Hereford Middle, English Language Arts (ELA) teachers will organize their activities in Schoology by Units.

Each Unit folder will hold assignments for one academic quarter. Additionally, ELA Teachers will set up

folders with items that will assist your students throughout the year. Some possible examples are: Classroom

Resources, Grammar and Writing Resources, Vocabulary, etc. Reading teachers will set up folders for each

unit as well. Word lists and activities for vocabulary practice will be included in each folder. We invite you

and your student to explore the resources provided to support your HMS learners.

reading graphic novels, and the HMS Book Club, which focuses on reading traditional novels. There will be a

joint meeting of both book clubs after school until 3pm on October 9th. The clubs will split for all the

following meetings. If your student is interested in becoming a part of either, or both, have them see Mr.

Thomas in the library for a permission slip ASAP.

REMINDERS:

DROPPED OFF ITEMS

Items will be placed in appropriate grade lunch baskets to be distributed to students during their lunch shift.

If your child has called you or is aware that an item is being brought in, it is the child’s responsibility to come

to the office to pick it up. Please let your child know the estimated time you will be dropping off the item, so

they are aware when to pick the item up.

8

VISITORS

All parents and other visitors entering the school must report to the office through the front doors and sign in.

Please make sure that you have a photo ID with you when you report to the office. Each visitor will have

their ID scanned by one of the staff and a photo badge will be issued. Anyone in the school building

without a badge should expect to be approached and questioned. We have also reminded staff and

students that they are never allowed to open any door to visitors. All visitors must be buzzed into the

building. These guidelines are designed to assist us in providing a safe and orderly school environment.

Hereford Middle strongly encourages parent involvement and participation in the school and our program.

Our guidelines are intended to ensure the safety and security of the school community, not to limit parent

involvement in our school. If you, or someone on your child’s emergency contact list are picking up your

child early from school, photo ID is always required. We thank you in advance for your cooperation with this

safety measure.

ARRIVAL & DISMISAL

Due to traffic and the amount of busses that service the Hereford Zone, it is recommended that all students

ride their assigned bus to and from school.

Students are dropped off at Hereford Middle between 7:20 and 7:35am. Students should not be dropped off

at HMS before 7:20 am as there is no supervision. Doors open at 7:20. Busses begin arriving at approximately 1:15pm. It is recommended that if you need to come to school during

this time to park on the street and walk up to the school. Parking is not permitted in the parking lot during

dismissal because busses need to park double wide throughout the bus loop and parking lot. Students have

a staggered dismissal in the afternoon beginning at 2:00pm. If you are picking your child up after school

please arrive after 2:20pm. Staff members supervising students in the cafeteria for parent pickup will escort

students to the bottom of the bus loop. For safety reasons, students are not permitted to meet parents on

Corbett Road. Car riders need to have a note that will be approved by the administration. Students should

drop off these requests to the office in the morning during homeroom.

Please make note that it is BCPS policy that students are not permitted to ride another student’s bus home

for any reason. They may get off at another child’s bus stop only if that child rides the same assigned bus.

Thank you for honoring this policy.

EARLY DISMISSALS

If your child needs to leave school early for any reason, he/she needs to bring a note into the front office in

the morning before they go to homeroom. The office will issue a pass to them for their early dismissal.

Students will show their classroom teacher the pass at time of dismissal, and then should proceed to their

locker and to the front office to await your arrival. Upon your arrival you will have to present ID for

verification and scanning. Please do not forward early dismissal and/or after school pick up arrangement

notes by email or fax unless you have contacted the front office and have been instructed to do so.

LATE ARRIVALS/ TARDY

Any student coming late to school must report to the front office with a note stating the reason for lateness.

The office will write a pass for the student to go to class.

9

ABSENCES

Any time a student is absent from school he/she needs to bring a note to the homeroom teacher upon

returning to school. ** OFFICIAL MSDE ATTENDANCE RULE A full time student must be present for at least 4

hours to be marked present for a full day. A full-time student must be present at least 2 hours to be marked

half-day present. Full-time students present for less than 2 hours will be marked as absent. The State of

Maryland standard for attendance is 94% for satisfactory (absent no more than 11 days per school year) and

96% for excellent (absent no more than 7 days per school year. Please note that HMS has an automated

calling system to advise you of your child’s absence from school. In the event that your child is absent, you

will receive an automated telephone and/or email message advising you of the absence. You do not need

to call to confirm. You only need to contact the school if you feel that this is an error, or you have a concern.

Please continue to send a written note into your child’s homeroom teacher upon their return to school.

HOMEWORK REQUESTS

If you wish to pick up work for your child you will need to notify your child’s grade level coordinator. Work

may then be picked up from the front office at the end of the following school day. Grade 6: J. Brad Seeley

[email protected], Grade 7: Kim Kouyoumjian [email protected], Grade 8: Pam Kohlenstein

[email protected]

EMERGENCY EARLY DISMISSAL/INCLEMENT WEATHER

Please complete the early dismissal plan form. Discuss your plan with your student to ensure no confusion on

the day of an early dismissal. Pay close attention to the news or refer to the BCPS website or app.

MEDICATION POLICY

All prescription and non-prescription medication taken in school must be brought in by a parent/guardian. It

should be accompanied with a written order signed by a physician/ nurse practitioner/dentist. This policy

applies to both prescription and OTC medications, except for those medications listed on the discretionary

medication form. All students will receive a discretionary medication form. This form should be completed by

a parent/guardian and returned to the school nurse. Prescription medicines must be in a current prescription

bottle and include: label with the name of the medicine, dosage, time of administration, student’s name

and the doctor’s name. The school nurse needs to be aware of any student’s need for an inhaler or epi-pen.

In addition, a physician’s order must be kept on file with the nurse. If beginning a new medication, the first

dose should always be given at home. Any leftover medication that is not picked up at the end of the

school year will be discarded.

HEREFORD MIDDLE SCHOOL

Independent Student Service Learning

Dear students and families,

Service learning is a teaching method that combines meaningful service to the community with curriculum-

based learning. Students improve their academic skills by applying what they learn in school to the real

world; they then reflect on their experience to reinforce the link between their service and their learning.

As mandated by the Maryland State Board of Education, all Maryland students must complete a student

service requirement in order to earn a high school diploma. Students may begin working toward the 75-

hour graduation requirement the summer after they complete Grade 5. Hours can be earned throughout

middle and high school.

Hours may be earned by completing independent projects, by participating in service-related

organizations/clubs and infused classroom lessons. Infused hours will be added to the 4th quarter report

card and are a component of 2-3 subject in each grade.

Before beginning any independent Service Learning project, you must first obtain approval to ensure it

meets the guidelines. In order to receive credit for Student Service Learning follow these steps:

1. Pick up a Pre-Approval form. Forms are available from the School Counseling Office, Service Learning

Bulletin Board in the B Hallway or can be printed from the school website under Counseling > Service

Learning > Service learning forms

2. The student should complete the Pre-Approval form. Answers should be thoughtful and in complete

sentences.

3. Bring the form to Mrs. Shields, or grade level counselor in the School Counseling Office for an approval

signature.

4. After the activity is finished, the student should complete the

Verification and Reflection Form. Answers should be thoughtful and in

complete sentences. Turn in both completed forms (Pre-Approval

and Verification and Reflection) to Mrs. Shields and you will receive

notification when your hours are recorded. If you have questions

about the program, please feel free to see me in the school

counseling office or email me at [email protected]

PARENT BCPSone & SCHOOLOGY Information

Here’s a great link for parent for help with bcpsone/Schoology questions.

https://bcpsone.bcps.org/support/learn_about_schoology.aspx

From setting up your parent account, adding your child, accessing your child’s

gradebook, to video tutorials, this page has the links to often asked questions.

If you still have a question please contact our HMS STAT teacher, Christopher Putnam at [email protected]

The next two pages are some helpful tips on setting up your BCPSone parent account.

Troubleshooting myBCPS One Parent Accounts

Most parents will have immediate access to their students in Schoology without needed any additional troubleshooting. In

the event that one does encounter difficulty during this initial process, the steps below are intended to provide additional

troubleshooting strategies and support for parents attempting to either create or access Schoology through their BCPS One

Parent Account. In order to access a child’s information, a parent must first create a myBCPS account, and then

add/connect the student to their account before they will be able to access the Parent View in Schoology.

For parents that don’t have a myBCPS account:

• Create a myBCPS account by going to

https://bcpsone.bcps.org/ and clicking Log in to

BCPS One.

• Instead of logging in, click Create Account.

• Follow the on-screen instructions to create your

account. Be sure that the e-mail you use to create

your account is the same e-mail address that the

school has on record.

For parents that already have a myBCPS

account, but do not see the child in Schoology:

• Make sure the e-mail used to create your account

is the same e-mail address that the school has on

record.

• Connect your students by logging in to BCPS One

and selecting the My Profile link at the top.

• The next screen will display a list of any students

currently attached to the account.

• To reconnect or add additional students, click the

Add Student button and enter the school and

student DOB when requested.

• The new students should now display in the list, and

the parent will now be able to access the student

activity in Schoology using the additional

instructions provided on the Learn More About

Schoology Page.

For parents that are BCPS Employees, and do

not see the child in Schoology:

• Make sure that your BCPS e-mail is the e-mail

address that the school has on record.

• When you first log in to BCPS One, click on the

drop-down box on the right and switch to Parent.

• Then click on Student Information.

• Click My Profile in the top right. It’s important that

you’re in your parent account before you click

profile because if not it will kick you to the BCPS

Intranet site.

• The next screen will display a list of any students

currently attached to the account.

• To reconnect or add additional students, click the

Add Student button and enter the school and student

DOB when requested.

• The new students should now display in the list, and

the parent will now be able to access the student

activity in Schoology using the additional

instructions provided on the Learn More About

Schoology page in the Quick Tips section.

If you have tried all of the troubleshooting tips

listed above and you continue to encounter an

issue/error:

• Please contact the school to make sure that the e-

mail that the school has on file matches the e-mail

used to set up your myBCPS Parent Account.

• If you have verified with the school office that the

correct e-mail address is on file then contact the In-

School Support Specialist for BCPS One and

Schoology related issues. In most buildings the In-

School Support Specialist is either the STAT

Teacher, an administrator, or other office staff.

Additional Schoology Parent Support:

• Additional parent resources, including printable

handouts and video tutorials, have been created to

support parents with Schoology are located at on the

Learn More About Schoology Page in BCPS One.

Dear PTA Members,

Have you ever thought of mentoring? Hereford Middle School is continuing

to participate in a formal mentor program this year and would love to have

as many enthusiastic mentors as possible. If you are interested in

mentoring, please email Melissa Jones ([email protected]) or Tracy

Sanna ([email protected]). Here are some quick questions you may have:

What is mentoring?

• Mentoring is relationship-based support taking place between youth and older, more

experienced persons. The goal of mentoring is to help mentees in areas of social, emotional,

and academic development.

How many students would I mentor?

• You can choose to meet with either one or two mentees depending on which situation is most

comfortable for you.

What are my responsibilities?

• Meet with your mentee two Wednesdays per month from 2:15 to 3pm.

• Be a compassionate, caring, empathetic adult in his or her life.

• Check in with your mentee in the mornings whenever possible.

• Build a positive relationship with your mentee in order to help him or her feel more connected

to the school community.

How will I learn what to do as a mentor?

• There will be a training session October 17th at 2:15 in the library.

• You can talk to your mentor coordinators (Tracy Sanna or Melissa Jones) at any time about

ideas.

• Ideas for mentor/mentee meetings will be supplied.

Why volunteer my time when I have so much to do!?

• You will feel pride in seeing your mentee reach his or her goals.

• You will create a valuable relationship with a student who relies on you.

• You will gain a better sense of empathy for the challenges young people face.

• You will have a direct positive impact of the life of a young person.

• You will be contributing to a better community of learners which will help you in the classroom.

• You will feel more joy and connection to your work place.
