Free Tax Preparation

The Hereford Senior Center will be providing free tax assistance and preparation through the AARP Foundation Tax-

Aide program. AARP tax preparers will be available March 1 and March 29. Spots are filling quickly so call the Center to schedule your appointment now.

You will need to bring

1. 2014 federal and state returns

2. Photo ID for all filers

3. Social Security card for each person on the

return

4. All income statements (W2, 1099 and other

forms showing income from interest,

dividends, capital gains, stock sales or Social

Security)

5. Receipts for medical, dental bills, prescriptions

and insurance premiums

6. Property tax and mortgage interest

statements

7. Receipts for charitable donations and other

itemized deductions

8. A check or bank card showing routing and

account numbers to receive direct deposit of

the refund.

Mardi Gras Tuesday Come and get into the

spirit of Mardi Gras, a

celebration of music,

food, and excitement.

Revelers traditionally

wear purple, green and

gold. There will be masks and beads for

everyone. Test your knowledge of Mardi

Gras during a trivia contest or by completing

a special word search. And be on hand for

the crowning of the Mardi Gras king and

queen. Music will be provided by Tim Amann

of Pet Rock. His tunes will surely have your

feet tapping as he sings songs from the 60’s

and 70’s.

Donations Help Us Spread Love

love to those who are

less fortunate by

donating to our LOVE

Drive. Most shelters receive the bulk of their

donations in November and December, but

their coffers are diminished by February. We

are collecting food as well as mittens, scarfs,

and hats. The donations will be sent to a

shelter in the Monkton area.

Leap Year Trivia

The Romans first designated February 29 as leap day, but a more precise formula

(still in use today) was adopted in the 16th century when the Gregorian calendar fine-

tuned the calculations to include a leap day in years only divisible by four - 2012,

2016, 2020, 2024, etc.

Another stipulation ruled that no year divisible by 100 would have a leap year,

except if it was divisible by 400. *Thus, 1900 was not a leap year ... but 2000 was!

US Presidential elections and Summer Olympic Games are both held every four

years and occur in the Leap Year.

According to a tale dating back to fifth century Ireland, St Brigid complained to St Patrick that women had to wait too long for men to propose marriage, and so he decided that in a leap year, women could take the initiative.

There’s a similar custom in the United States that was born from the famous comic strip L’il Abner by American cartoonist Al Capp. In his fictional town of Dogpatch, there was a character called Sadie Hawkins, who couldn’t attract a husband because she was ugly. Her father then set up a day each year when women could literally chase after the bachelors in town in a race. The unlucky sod who is caught would have to marry the women who nabs him. While the event was held in November in the comic strip, it now seems to be associated with Feb 29.

Senior Box Office (SBO) offers complimentary and discounted tickets to members for cultural, educational, and entertainment events. SBO also offers exciting travel opportunities to both members and non-members. A brochure outlining events and trips is published quarterly. Seniors age 60 and older are eligible to join. The 2015-2016 membership runs October 1, 2015 through September 30, 2016. Annual membership dues are:

Maryland Access Point ( MAP) of Baltimore County is part of a nationwide effort to streamline access to support, services and benefits to older adults, persons with disabilities, their families and care providers.

Center Connection links persons age 60 and over who need support to activities and services provided by the senior center. Center Connection Specialists, operating in eight Baltimore County Senior Centers, maximize individual’s senior center experience by encouraging participation in activities, registering for classes/Eating Together, and connecting them with other members.

This program connects Baltimore County residents age 60+ to community resources. Outreach workers evaluate seniors’ needs, assist with applying for benefits and services, and connect seniors to resources.

CountyRide provides paratransit transportation within the County for qualifying clients to appointments Monday through Friday. Reservations must be prescheduled and are scheduled on a first come, first serve basis. A book of 6 tickets costs $15. Payment by check or exact amount of cash (No change available in vehicles.)

The Eating Together program provides a nutritious meal and socialization in over 40 County sites in senior centers, community buildings and senior residences. Residents aged 60 and over and their spouses of any age are eligible to participate in this program and are asked to make a voluntary, confidential donation.

This community-based volunteer program provides social support to County seniors 60+ who are isolated and confined to their home. Through friendly in-home and telephone visits, volunteers offer the needed interaction, socialization and reassurance to help seniors maintain a higher quality of life with the ability to remain independent in their home longer.

Trained volunteers answer questions regarding Medicare A and B, Medicare Advangtage Plans, Medicare Supplement Insurance (medigaps), Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (Part D), Medicaid and potential Medicare frauds. Also, callers are assessed for eligibility to obtain financial assistance to help with Medicare and prescription cost.

The effects of severe weather and concern for the safety of our constituents may, however, lead us to close centers, CountyRide, and other services/programs. When this or closing for any other reason occurs, media announcements regarding closures or late openings will ONLY be made on WBAL Radio, 1090 AM; WBAL-TV 11 and WJZ-TV 13. Information on closings and/or late openings will also be published on the Baltimore County web site, www.baltimorecountymd.gov. Senior Centers will open at 10:30 a.m. when a 2-hour delay is reported.
