Here’s a hodgepodge of facts related to the Scientific Revolution that I could’ve had you take notes on, but this is a little quicker and easier.

occurred from approximately the mid-1500s to the late 1600s

(the Renaissance was from the 1300s-1600s)

scientific discoveries from this time were often a response to the inaccuracies of Greek, Egyptian, and Roman science

as people started to question the Catholic Church during the Protestant Reformation, scientists began to question the longstanding ideas about the world & solar system

scientific method- painstaking method used to confirm findings and to prove or disprove a hypothesis; depended on observation and experimentation

Before the scientific method was introduced, authorities like Aristotle and Ptolemy as well as the Bible were looked to for scientific knowledge.

promoted by Francis Bacon and Rene Descartes

•they rejected Aristotle’s scientific assumptions

•challenged the idea that knowledge of the physical world should fit in with the Catholic Church’s teachings

•believed truth could only be discovered after a long process of investigation

What did Ptolemy believe?

•thought the universe was shaped like an onion

•the earth was the center of all things; it was surrounded by layers of revolving transparent substances

•stuck in the layers of invisible material were

the sun, moon, planets, and stars

•motion was considered unnatural; believed angels were pushing the planets & stars

•Ptolemy was the most important authority on astronomy in the early 1500s

These inventions all helped scientists study nature, discover new facts, and measure data more accurately.

The Catholic Church believed that the earth was the center of the universe; the Church feared that by attacking its geocentric theory, people would begin to doubt other teachings of the Catholic Church

1616- Galileo warned by the Church not to teach Copernicus’ heliocentric theory

1632- Galileo publishes a book, Dialogue on the Two Chief World Systems

It includes a dialogue between Ptolemy & Copernicus; character who believes in geocentric theory portrayed as foolish & character who believes in heliocentric theory is logical & convincing

1633- Galileo called before the Inquisition; accused of teaching ideas that go against the church, or

many European scientists read Galileo’s book and started to believe the heliocentric theory

the Inquisition ordered the burning of Galileo’s book
