Hereward was born in the rst hal o the 11th century,

and according to the tales, was the son o the Earl oMercia. We know rom his turbulent youth that he wasexiled by Edward the Conessor and ought as a merce-

nary in Flanders, keeping some wild company.

He went back aer the Norman Conquest, to discoverthat his amily has been slain by the invaders, and

his athers estate conscated. He rebelled againstEnglands new rulers, and established his rear-base inthe great abbey o the Isle o Ely. Many Danes, somemercenaries and outlaws joined him in his rebellion.

For years he was a pain in the Normans backside, and a legend or the Saxons.

He died in an ambush, ghting the Normans withhis sword, Brainbiter, covered with their blood.

Hero of the Viking Age: Hereward is a Hero o the

Viking Age and as such, it will cost you 1 point toinclude him in your Anglo-Danish warband. Unlikeother Anglo-Dane Warlords, Hereward does not ghtwith a Dane-axe.

Leaders of Many: Hereward generates two Saga Dice,

plus one extra Saga Die or each Swords or Hire or Levyunit his warband includes (and still on the table whenthe Saga Dice to be rolled are determined). A warbandled by Hereward may not include Huscarls.

Flemish Exile: Any warband led by Hereward mayinclude any number o units o Flemish Mercenaries,

and not one as other warbands (note that although ledby a Hero o the Viking Age, Flemish Mercenaries mayjoin Herewards warband). Also, Flemish Mercenaries inHerewards warband are not subject to the Foreignersspecial rule and act as standard Warriors o thewarband.

Brainbiter: When ghting alone in a melee (i.e. withoutany other unit on his side) against an enemy with ahigher Armour value than him, Hereward may re-rollonce any Attack Dice which ails to hit.

Like Lindisarne, abbeys and monasteries were easy

preys or the Vikings during the Dark Ages.Isolated, poorly deended but oering many riches, they learnt to live with the rightening prospect olongships appearing, vomiting their crew o savage

    Norsemen.

With their settlements burnt and pillaged, most monks

would fee in the wilderness, seeking shelter in a lordsestate or the security o a nearby ortied settlement. But some o them could not orgive, and would takearms and seek vengeance, which took the shape o a

holy crusade against the Men o the North.

Such bands o desperate monks could join a Warlords

warband, as long as they elt his cause was just andinspire him to ght the enemies o God and wash his

    sins in their blood.

Most Warlords want to leave a record o their

passage in this world. What better than to havetheir eats and deeds told o or years at banquets

and gatherings? Unortunately, most o them

are illiterate and have a short memory.

In this case, the best way to ensure that your legend

will outlive you is to hire an educated storytellerthat will tell your tales, embellishing them i needed.

Tey can be Celtic Bards, scribes or Norse Skalds.

Tese singers and poets can be ound in any culture,

and are avorites ollowers o proud Warlords.

Swords for Hire: Te Wandering Bard may be included in

any warband that is not led by a Hero o the Viking Age.He is ree and orms a unit o his own. He counts as aWarrior, may not have any equipment option, except or ahorse i the Warlord o his warband is also mounted. He is worth two victory points. I he is killed, yourWarlord immediately takes one FAIGUE.

Storyteller: With a storyteller on his side, we can expectthat your Warlord will have to behave accordingly unlesshe wants his reputation to be tarnished. Te ollowingrules apply to your Warlord during the whole game (eveni the Bard has been killed):

    - He may not Rest unless he has two or more FAIGUEmarkers.

    - He does not benet rom the Side-by-Side special rule(i.e. he may only engage the enemy on his own).

Inspiration: As long as the Wandering Bard is withinS oyour Warlord, your Warlord gains the ollowing benets:

    - Any enemy model killed by your Warlord counts doublewhen it comes to determining the victory points (set

them aside to remind you that they are worth twice thenormal number o VPs).

    - He may use his Determination and We Obey rules a

second time every turn (the Bard must be withinSo theWarlord when these rules are used or the second time).
